i do identify with that ethos, too. was bullied all my life and escaped from the real world through music, and yeah, shouty angry anthems that packed a point were probably my favourite. i was a diehard korn fan, jonathan's lyrics really ~spoke to me~....haha.

Everyone was bullied, lets face it. Truth. You know what got me through it? Not giving a shit. Just throwing it right back. "Why do you hate _____ Anna?" "She's a slag who opens her legs for everyone." "Oh. Why do you hate ____?" "She wants to be a slag but no one will touch her dry female reproductive organs."

Ditto what dot said, it's exactly what i thought. The '15 yr old to 25 yr old' line also got to me, i got that 'oh god i'm going to cry' feeling. But, uh, I didn't. Everyone was bullied, lets face it. I prefer to think 'Everyone's life is tragic', personally. I don't think i was inherently bullied, but there were times when i felt as such. Although I may have been being melodramatic...

I meant hid as escape? Maybe wasn't the right phrase but this isn't my first language and FYI yes I was the smallest in my class and year which made me an easy target

Incidentally, my CD player hideout contained both X-Ray Spex and Patrick Wolf.

X-Ray Spex are deffo one of the better British punk bands. Something about Punk+Sax just works for some reason. See also The Stooges- Funhouse.

bullying doesn't happen to everyone, i'm sure it's a comforting thing to think if it's happened to you though. however bad things do happen to everyone, i wouldn't say "everyone's life is tragic" though because "tragedy" as such is subjective, i'm sure there's people who would consider my life tragic when i think of myself as incredibly lucky.

Everyone is certainly bullied on wolfboard, I make sure of it.
Sibz is right though tis all subjective, my life is pretty much shithouse especially at the moment but a starving lad from one of those rubbish countries would knaw his own toes off to have my life.

I wouldn't say I was bullied because that would be inaccurate. But I was definitely not in a happy place at that time.
Is it Buddhism that says we're connected by our suffering? (I'm not a scholar, I've just watched I Heart Huckabees.)

Actually I found it amusing Jonathan got it so spot on. is he psychic?
Of course not everyone is or has been bullied but I think Patrick's songs resonate with people who have been or still are a misfit or an outsider or has been bullied so it is not surprising that a majority of people on this board would have experiences of those.
his songs and his own admissions of his experiences as a kid has definitively help me to come to terms with my own.

while it's not my favorite on the record, it's one of my favorite to hear performed live. It's a crowd thumper, and with a passionate voice on those firm stance lyrics, it can actually be kind of cool. so it's enjoyable in a different context than as an album track. I felt the same way about "The Messenger" thought it was meh, saw him perform it, now it's one of my favs off the album.

(L) Patrick's reasoning behind Bachelor & on days I love the song, it just fills you with this energy that..anything can happen...that maybe you can actually do something that will make a difference. I don't really think its a bad song at all.

while it's not my favorite on the record, it's one of my favorite to hear performed live. I have to agree! The show in Toronto turned into some kind of crazy mosh and everyone was just jumping around yelling "Battle!!" over and over. It was the best part of the show. (how have I not noticed patrick's various posts until now?)

Hey ... I've just read all posts of this thread. & I've really liked Patrick's post, it makes much sense to me. I used to feel sad in school, i hadn't friends and other pupils mocked me cause i wasn't like them, i didn't listen the same music, ect, but i didn't wanna change nor pretend i was like them & i think it's why i hadn't friends. I was shy, i didn't trust me & their behaviour aggravated it. But i'm glad not to have changed even if it was a very difficult period. I know that it's thanks to Patrick's music, and Conor Oberst's music too, that i've made it through this period They really help me pass the bad days, they're also by my side on the good days, so i think they're my best friends in my "sony cassette walkman" & It's why i like Battle. In my opinion, it's important to have songs that convey a message, that talk about issues ... I was glad when i saw "Battle the conservative" "Battle the homophobe" cause it sounds like an anthem you can think of when you see all those discriminations, racism, ect. Sorry my message is a little long ... I hope my english isn't too bad.
