i've had radio 1 on for the past 45 minutes or so for the cats i'm catsitting and i'd have to say no. there is much worse out there. though battle is pretty damn bad.
eta: well, now audio bullys - shot you down is on the radio and i like that song but for the past 45 minutes it really has been crap.
very possibly. it's a running joke in our flat actually. "BATTLE THE FRIDGE" "BATTLE THE RADIATORS" etc, so on those grounds i do get amusement from it and should probably say no.

I quite like Battle, but even I'd say it was pretty bad, just endearing. There's much worse stuff out there, it's just in a back catalogue like this something weak really stands out.

I think the first paragraph of Identity Politics for Dummies recited over a very bad Prodigy b-side from the mid-nineties takes some beating to be honest...

BATTLE BACK YOUR LIBERTY
BATTLE BACK YOUR MIND BATTLE BACK YOUR HEART
BATTLE BACK YOUR LIBERTY BATTLE BACK YOUR LIBERTY BATTLE BACK YOUR LIBERTY
songs with such a message can't be bad. the world needs more of them.
and the twice told fields of infancy / that his tears burned my cheeks and his heart moved in mine.
these were the woods the river and sea / where a boy / in the listening /
summertime of the dead whispered the truth of his joy / to the trees and the stones and the fish in the tide.
and the mystery / sang alive / still in the water and singing birds.
Haha, Josh! I can't believe I didn't see this before.
Like everyone else, I'd be inclined to say yes, yes it is the worst song ever written. But I too have had many a joke with my friends at Battle's expense, so it has one upside.
Birdsheart - quoting the lyrics? Really?
"Battle the conservative Battle for your battle battle battle Battle the homophobe, but battle without war!"
It's profound! *wipes tear from eye* Let's have some more!
"Since I was 12 [when I wrote these lyrics] it's been me vs. the world!!!! I got so sick of being told my identity was in minority! But now WE'VE GOT TRIBE!! ....and we've got some battle.
battle battle battle
Fight without fists!!!!!"
Talking, what's it good for? Absolutely nothing. Wrestle, let's wrestle You can pin me to anything.
"be you own hero, be your own saviour, send all your suffering into the fire. and let no foot mark your ground, let no hand hold you down,"
eh? What happened to lyrics like that?
It was a sad day when "Us wolves, we're right behind you and Lucifer will never find you" was replaced with "NOW WE'VE GOT TRIBE!" WE GOT TRIBE, GUISE!!1!1!
How lucky are we!?
BATTLE BATTLE[/size]

And I can't see where the lyrics from lycanthropy and battle are an antagonism. If you're your own hero you still can have a tribe. It's always good to know that one isn't alone in his feeling and mind. That doesn't mean you have to stop thinking for your own - just that there are maybe more people around with the same problems. It all depends from which point of view you look at the lyrics.
So yeah musicwise maybe not the best song but the lyrics? Great (:

Ah, that's fair enough, but it's not what I meant.
I think that it Patrick has always tried to give the same messages in his music (fight to be an individual, you have the support of me and everyone else, and so on and so forth), but in the past he has conveyed it beautifully, with the subtle, poetic and effective lyrics of his first few albums.. and that all goes down the pan with The Bachelor, where he becomes like a screaming child.
It has quite literally gone from "Let no foot mark your ground" to "Battle the homophobe! Battle battle".
Yeah, and then there's the music It's all just my opinion, of course.

What?
When I said "Quoting the lyrics - really?" I was meaning "are you really going to post lyrics to this song in order to argue for it? I think they're the worst bit". A point which I then demonstrated with gusto. It was a joke. I'm sorry I don't know which lyrics are official and which are live - I don't listen to the song all that often, you see. I don't really understand what you're getting at.

well... (for me) a protest song, doesn't have to possess profound brilliancy, musically. the message is the key, like björks 'declare independence'. it just needs succinct lyrics and 'kick in the face' music. and that is what drags people along. i love the powerful music on 'battle', it maintains the lyrics so well. and every time, patrick plays this song live, i'm happy.
after leaving the patti smith concert, i felt the same as after 'battle' live, and that's how it should be. it's not important which route an artist choose, if the message receives and awakes some of us.

I think Battle is tremendously powerful and gives me huge strength every time I listen to it. Kind of fed up of people mocking Patrick at the moment, seeing as this is meant to be a board you come to in order to get away from people mocking each other. It was for me, anyway. Hmm.
there's something almost offensive about it i find, but i'm finding it hard to work out exactly what it is. i'm sure tara will offer some good points as she's excellent at these kind of things. florence made an excellent point about the lyric progression earlier as well.
i think one of the reasons it pisses me off is because i don't feel patrick is doing much to help further the gay movement which is specifically what this song is about. he writes songs and blogs about love and respecting people, and then acts like a dick.

It's not just the lyrics. The song SOUNDS horrible, cheap and tacky. It just brings to mind some "adrenaline pumping" music from a car chase sequence in a Vin Diesel movie.
