The songs that stand out for me the most, after the first listen: The Bachelor The Sun Is Often Out Theseus And I don't have reasons for this yet. I'm sure in time they'll all stand out against each other. I can really feel that Patrick making this album has really helped him, and I can tell every song means a lot to him, and none of them are in anyway pretentious or drab. And I'm sure he's learnt a lot about more technical production than what he's used to before. But I don't think it makes the album any less credible, he's just channeling stuff in a different way than we're probably used to hearing. But I can definitely feel that he deserves every success he gets, and I don't think it could ever make him a 'sell out'. Anyway, I'm really quite moved by it actually. The amount of work that has gone into them. I'm also unsure about Tilda Swinton's parts, but I think I like them at the same time as occasionally feeling a little uncomfortable by it. The only song I'd say I'm not sure about and never have been, is 'Battle', because it's so completely different to anything he has ever done. At the same time it sort of gives me shivers because it's very scary/powerful and it feels angry and I guess that's what he wanted. Even the way the vocals have had effects on it so the sound sort of goes through you. So yeah, I'm not sure. I sort of love it in the way it feels sort of hypnotic - is that just me? Anyway, I still can't give a 'rating' because I don't think I've given them all enough listens yet. I'm very happy with it though actually.

The first time i heard it i knew it wasn't going to beat my favorite album, the Magic Posistion, but as i've listened to it more i really do think it's a brilliant. It's different. It's not like the other 3 before it and thats a brilliant thing. Each album holds its own unique qualities and none of them sound the same. The bachelor still amazes me with songs like 'The sun is often out' and 'The messenger'. It definately grows on you as a record. I'm glad it doesnt sound the same as the other 3 because then it wouldn't be Patrick is it wasn't new and different lol. Beautiful lyrics, electronics, piano riffs and that same vastness of instruments we expect from Patrick. It might not have the rawness from WITW or lycanthropy or the popness from the magic position but i think it brings something new to his list of achievements It'd give it a or 8/9 if i had to number it but i dont think it should be even compared to the other albums as none of them are the same..... k thats me done XD lol OH! and the bachelor!! i agree with that guy up above the IRISHNESSYNESS YAHZ I knew he said he was 'going back to his roots' but holy SHIZZ i had to get up and do some irish jigging when i heard Blackdown Even Thickets sounds like running around Ireland!

I've decided not to listen to the songs till I get a hard copy of the album in my hands. I want to be able to lie on my bed with it in my ears so I can hear every detail of each song and listen to the album as a whole.

I must resist the temptation of listening to the entire album on Myspace. Ughh, this is going to be difficult.

I'm not getting that comparison either.
I forgot to say: I love Tilda Swinton on this album. I think she is the perfect voice, the perfect person for the part. I mean, it's Tilda Swinton, come on, she exponentially improves everything she touches.

I think, that after my first listen, I'm not going to listen again until I get the album. I don't want to get too familiar with the songs just yet, and my internet connection isn't very good, so it occasionally keeps stopping throughout the songs.

I think the album is incredible, genuine genius. And I also think it's really hard for me to rank it amongst Patrick's other albums because they're obviously all so different. I honestly can't pick a favourite or a least favourite out of any of his albums because as soon as I choose one, I remember something I love about another and it never resolves on any one particular album. And I'm happy to say The Bachelor can match the other three on this. "Thickets" is my favourite Patrick Wolf song now, and possibly my favourite song ever. When he sings "What have I become?" I feel like melting haha. Edit: I forgot to mention that I never thought there could be a better end to an album as "The Stars/Finale" but The Messenger has almost managed it for me.

JESUS CHRIST that was epic.
That album was incredibly amazing. If this doesn't win a Grammy there's obviously something wrong with the world of music.
The Bachelor created such an emotional and poignant atmosphere! I love the addition of the guitars esp. in Hard Times and Oblivion (two of the best tracks he has ever written).
OMG i loved it. It was an ear orgasm. Good work Patty Boy!

I mean, it's Tilda Swinton, come on, she exponentially improves everything she touches. Well the comparison was supposed to be about the subdued electric sound that both the bands have, that is a running theme through this album. So what if it's Tilda Swinton, it could be Tom Hanks and it wouldn't work. I said she just takes it down a notch for me, she sounds like an anomoly and especially in Oblivion. However after listening to the album for the majority of today, with might I add a strong hangover, I've thought more of the ballads than I did yesterday... Maybe Tilda will grow on me.... But this whole Oblivion affair still sounds like the narration to a World of Warcraft boss fight video on YouTube.

There's really not a lot subtle about The Klaxons.

i first heard it a few weeks back and remember being dissapointed, thinking that it had a lot of potential but just ended up sounding cheesy and overproduced. Its definetly a grower i've listened to it over 30 times now and love it! This would've been my favourite record of the year so far if i hadn't already heard Dan Deacon's Bromst.

omg.... i have to post again.... i love patrick wolf so much... i can't stop listening... this is ridiculous. i have 140 gig of music and all i want to listen to is patrick wolf. argh help... its been a while since someone has been this good and appeals in such a manner. i just love his remixes too, the electronic edge is killer! i think 'battle' sucks, but that doesnt even register... every single thing he has touched apart from that track is diamond plated gold in a sea of molten platinum.

With more listens, I would now give it a 9.
I think "Hard Times" is one of his catchiest songs albeit not his best. The violin and the vocals combined just sears into my head and repeats on and on. It is an enjoyable ear worm. I was at first disappointed "Oblivion" was so far from "Barghest", but it is amazing in its own right. I mean, it has this rhythm to it like no other. I really enjoy the clacking beats combined with the surf guitar and swooping strings. Tilda's narration just hits it right to perfection.
"The Bachelor" is the odd duckling of the album. It feels so unrestrained and stripped. To me it's the most challenging sonically and the most rewarding. "Thickets" has grown on me. It has some of the best lyrics known to man with easy, lulling instrumentation circling you. The vocals are still the best part.
I can forgive some of the lines on "Who Will," because it is all sorts of lovely otherwise. Oh, "Blackdown" feels so empowering when he sings out, "Desire desire, you are not the maker of me." "The Sun is Often Out" is one of the most beautiful songs my ears have come in contact in. If you do not ache from those strings and voice/lyrics you are not me, clearly.
I tend to skip "Vulture" and "Battle". Yuck.
I also wonder how all of these songs would sound a bit more stripped and how I may like them better.
