Apparently. rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/single/2000sNowt official, and nothing from a respectable source, but I thought a lot of those choices were...interesting. Although what the bejiggins The Pippettes are doing in there I will never know. Or what Jose Gonzalez's cover of Heartbeats is doing above the original. Thoughts? Additions? I'm not really sure they should be counting re-releases, even if Where Is My Mind is my favourite song of all time. I'd probably have Rebellion (Lies) at the top. (For the fangirls; The Magic Position is at 147.)

The Pipettes anger me a lot. They've tried so hard to work up this persona that just screams "we're so cute for a girlgroup because we match with eachother. polka dots are exactly what we should be wearing right now".
Their music is just as dire.
And Bros is pretty high in the list.

hahaha I actually LIKE The Pipettes, ha I know I know...Pull Shapes was my favourite single of last year in fact. You can all cyber-disown me now.
I love RateYourMusic too, I'm slightly addicted to that site.
I'm not surprised this list is a bit mediocre, the 00's is easily my least favourite musical decade since the dawn of the pop age. (for the record the Nineties is my favourite with the Sixties very close behind)

The Pipettes are atrocious, and extremely cynical. I've criticised them in the past and people tend to think my reasons for doing so are because they don't play instruments. I have nothing against groups like that whatsoever, it's the fact that they're terrible singers in their stupid matching outfits, with their nauseating attempts at being cute and retro. The record company saw the rise in popularity of the retro scene, polka dots, the 50s and whatnot, and tried to capitalise on it. They failed. Now fuck off, Pipettes. Who Could Win a Rabbit at #421? Only 1 place above Less Than Jake? BAH! I've come across two Panda Bear songs thus far (I'm Not at #259 and Bro's at #18, which is deserving), as well as Peacebone at #132 and Grass at #184. Like Glue by Sean Paul, top 20 at least. Oh good, can you tell me what 'Well enough likkle girl dem bought they own dem got di goody goody ' means?

Don't really agree about The Pipettes, they where knocking about for years with a different line up and the whole poka dot gimmick before that look was quite so ubiquitous on the inde dancefloors of the nation. They aren't a cynical record company product from what I've read.
I actually was really really hostile to them at first, cos I dislike pastiche in music though I am a sucker for that kind of music, ie girly harmony laden pop. In the end I succumb, I just think they have great melodies even if some of the "post-feminist" lyrics about shagging boys and stuff are a bit forced and bothersome.
It Hurts To See You Dance So Well, A Winters Sky, Pull Shapes, are too notch pieces of pop songwriting if you ask me. Don't really care about the image and what cultural/fashion zeitgeist they represent or are marketed to. I just like the songs. Ha if I did care about these things I wouldn't listen to Magic position era Patrick..

The main issue I have with them is the fact that I find their songs unbelievably impossible to listen to. I have to leave the room/change the channel/switch off the radio/cut off my ears if I hear one of their songs, they are one of a handful of bands who actually infuriate and frustrate me (another being The Magic Numbers). The girl harmonies I don't have a problem with, or rather I wouldn't if they were good singers. I adore 50s and 60s girl pop - Motown, Wall Of Sound and all that. This band, to me, sound like a group of girls down the karaoke. Whether they actually are a gimmick or not is besides the point - they LOOK cheap and gimmicky, and I want them to go away forever. Other atrocities: Michael appears to be the lowest ranking Franz song (blates their second best single, one behind Take Me Out and one in front of The Fallen). Madness.

Ha the I find (or found, the worlds forgot about them by now surely?) The Magic Numbers really frustrating, cos they have some alright songs but the singer has this croaky voice, like that guy out of The Thrills. I think if you going to do obviously Beach Boys influenced music, a band who's stock in trade was beautiful voices, it helps if you can sing. But in The Magic Numbers one of the girls in the band, the one who plays melodica or something and stands there doing nothing actually has a lovely voice and I'm like GRRR let her sing all the time! I might actually like you then!
Fucking Magic Numbers, Fucking Thrills, these bands (briefly) had the commercial success Teenage Fanclub deserved for a much interesting take on the Sixties California sound.

Bono, for all intents and purposes, is a bit of a tosser, but there was that gem of a quote from him about The Thrills covering an Elvis song: 'You can't cover Elvis whilst wearing slip-on loafers!' All Magic Numbers songs sound the same to me, the same bass-line with a bit of background singing from the girls. They are dull and annoying. They are a band that has the intention of making me feel summery and happy, put a skip in my step and whatnot, when what they actually achieve is to invoke the desire to go on some sort of samurai rampage, only with a blunt pencil to cause more pain and slower, more drawn-out deaths.

Now I present.. I review the whole top 100 singles of the 00's.
1 Where Is My Mind? Pixies Where Is My Mind? (2004) Bits of damning reflection on the decade that the best single of it(apparently) is a reissue?
2 Hurt / Personal Jesus Johnny Cash Hurt / Personal Jesus (2003) Hurt is a magical moment, the NIN version is alright, a sort of power ballad for the self hating Generation Xers, but somehow some fairydust got waved over this and it came out one of the most seminal recordings of our time. Not to keen on the B-side though, at this point in the American Recordings project some of the covers Rubin where suggesting where perhaps getting a tad gimmicky.
3 Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) Arcade Fire Interesting lyrics, melodically unmemorable.
4 Rebellion (Lies) Arcade Fire This song pisses me off, its like they had the idea to write a pop song then chickened out right at the last minute when it came the time to actually write a chorus.
5 B.O.B. OutKast Aww I love this, I haven't heard it in ages. It's a fucking banger. Hip Hop on ecstasy wasn't a half bad idea.
6 Intervention Arcade Fire More Arcade bloody Fire? I don't even know this one.
7 Hoppípolla Sigur Rós Sigur Ros are a total snore, they combine all the worst genres in music history (prog, shoegazing, hippy nu-age relaxation music..)
8 The Blower's Daughter Damien Rice Ha I confess I quite liked Damien Rice O at the time it came out, even then I wasn't that mad on this one.
9 Pretty (Ugly Before) Elliott Smith I should probably like Elliott Smith. I don't. He bores me.
10 7 Nation Army / Good to Me The White Stripes Still a belter for my money. I love that such a good song was such a big hit.
11 Glósóli Sigur Rós Fuck off and burn some incense hippies,
12 Maps Yeah Yeah Yeahs This is pretty good.
13 Wake Up Arcade Fire The most needlessly earnest song from the most needlessly earnest band in the world.
14 New Born [CD 1] Muse Liked this and Muse when I was a teen, its not that bad really, Muse only got really wank later when they started releasing what sounds like A-Ha b-sides as singles.
15 Banquet Bloc Party Not a fan of Bloc Party, but I actually really dig this. Proves you can do danceable indie without being really obvious. It has a certain mystery to it.
16 Inertiatic E.S.P. The Mars Volta Never should have split up At The Drive in to make tedious prog.
17 Wolf Like Me TV on the Radio More indie should be like this I think. Not really something I'd listen to a lot but its good.
18 Bro's Panda Bear To be honest I didn't know this one until a minute ago. Shame cos its fantastic. Glad they still make music like this somewhere out there.
19 Hey Ya! OutKast Much prefer the first OutKast song on the list. This is an over-rated Prince pastiche.
20 Pyramid Song [CD1] Radiohead One of my favourite Radiohead songs.
21 Take Me Out Franz Ferdinand Fun at the time, not that memorable in hindsight.
22 Happiness Elliott Smith See 9
23 Losing My Edge / Beat Connection LCD Soundsystem This leaves me cold. Probably quite good for what it is, but not me.
24 New Slang (When You Notice the Stripes) / Sphagnum Esplanade The Shins New Slang (When You Notice the Stripes) / Sphagnum Esplanade (2001)
25 Obstacle 1 Interpol When I heard this in 2002 I thought Interpol had a lot of promise. I was wrong.
26 Mr. Brightside The Killers Guilty pleasure. I can't deny this sounds good in a club.
27 Fell in Love With a Girl / I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself The White Stripes Fun
28 Letter from an Occupant The New Pornographers Decent, the sort of indie that translates better over the Atlantic perhaps.
29 Do You Realize?? The Flaming Lips This was the album where The Flaming Lips started losing it if you ask me. This song however is good.
30 Trouble Coldplay Not as bad as what was to come from Coldplay, bit AOR.
31 Yellow Coldplay This has always sound half arsed to me, shocked its such a anthem as its such lazy songwriting.
32 You Know You're Right Nirvana Loads of hype when this came out, now sort of a forgotten Nirvana song, shame. I like it, very cutting.
33 The Scientist Coldplay Rubbishy power ballad but I sort of respected them for not piling on the orchestra at any point
34 Hope There's Someone Antony and the Johnsons Don't care what anyone says, this is really divine and something pretty special. One of the few singles thats stopped me in my tracks in the last seven years.
35 Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) Arcade Fire Oh fuck off, I've made my feelings on the Arcade Fire clear. A second rate band for a second rate musical era.
36 Hard to Explain The Strokes Good clean and clever fun.
37 Jolene / Do The White Stripes Alright cover, but why the hell is this this high?!
38 Hallelujah Jeff Buckley When was this a single?!
39 Starlight Muse A-HA B-SIDE. FUCK OFF.
40 Can't Stand Me Now The Libertines This reminds me of the disintegration of my ex girlfriend and mes relationship. How lame.
41 Sæglópur Sigur Rós oh dear not more by them!
42 Hysteria Muse Lame hair metal without the class.
43 Crazy Gnarls Barkley I think this is a very bland unorganic record. It's not soul music, it has no soul.
44 Lazarus Porcupine Tree Not heard it.
45 Time Is Running Out Muse In retrospect this is where Muse got REALLY annoying.
46 The Widow The Mars Volta yawn
47 Float On Modest Mouse Like Rebellion (Lies) this makes me scream WRITE A FUCKING CHORUS YOU UNDERACHVING INDIE GIMPS. I listen to this and it just never seems to get going.
48 Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground The White Stripes A fantastic song, most of the Stripes first four albums is quality.
49 Lateralus Tool It's hardly surprising Prog metal doesn't really float my boat.
50 Somebody Told Me The Killers Eighties revival? That'll never catch on.. shit it did. Someone wake me from this nightmare.

you spent a really long time on this didn't you?
i love the arcade fire i do, but even i think that is too much and wale up is faar to fucking overrated, same for muse, glad tv on the radio made it up though.
and as much as ilove the pixies.....
i prefered the placebo cover of that song
and as i sat sadly by her side is a shockingly poor single from nick cave, very upsetting

38 Hallelujah Jeff Buckley When was this a single?! It was re-released a couple of months ago, to promote the greatest hits album his mother put out. I'm curious to know why you think Arcade Fire are second rate...I disagree, I think they're one of the few bands around at the moment that you could probably call mainstream and yet don't necessarily have that mainstream sound. They still do something different to most other bands out there; they are simultaneously difficult and accessible. (I do think Wake Up is over-rated though.) I also have sentimental attachments to Float On by Modest Mouse, for reasons I won't go into, so take that back, geekboy. Aaaaand I wouldn't refer to Take Me Out as forgettable...I think it kick-started the 'indie' trend of this century. Once that song came out and was MEGA popular, it gave every other twat in a skinny tie and his guitar free-reign to form a band and sell out the Astoria. I'm not necessarily suggesting they were the first 'indie' band to crop up, but they were probably the first to break the mainstream, and they - and consequently, Take Me Out - have done a lot for the way the music scene has turned out today. Whether that's a good or bad thing. I wish there were more bands around as genius as TV On The Radio.

51 Playground Love Air This is niicee.
52 Evil Interpol Antics in general was crap.
53 Such Great Heights The Postal Service Lovely little pop song.
54 Knives Out [CD1] Radiohead Unmemorable effort from Thom and co.
55 Electrical Storm U2 I'm sure you could make a computer program to write U2 songs, they seem to follow such a formula these days.
56 Californication [CD1] Red Hot Chili Peppers Just bland.
57 Strict Machine Goldfrapp Not the best song on Black Chery, decent though.
58 River Man Nick Drake Ha its amazing, but its no 00's!
59 Breathe Me Sia I don't know this one.
60 One Armed Scissor At the Drive-In This wasn't my favourite At The Drive-In song. When they played it on Jools Holland it was a classic pop moment though.
61 Staring at the Sun TV on the Radio repeat what I said for the last song by them.
62 Young Folks Peter Bjorn and John Interesting song, I can't work out if its meant to be haunting or Summery.
63 Yeah LCD Soundsystem See the last LCD Soundsystem single.
64 Butterflies and Hurricanes Muse Remind me what this one goes like?
65 Over and Over Hot Chip The Beta Band goes pop?
66 99 Problems / Dirt Off Your Shoulder Jay-Z Ha, good fun.
67 As I Sat Sadly by Her Side Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Its by Nick Cave, it mentions Kittens. Whats not to like?
68 ( ) #1 Sigur Rós If the Arcade Fire, Muse and Sigur Ros released singles burping the national anthems of South American countries would it make this list?
69 Plug in Baby [CD 1] Muse Cool riff, but they forget to write a song to go with it.
70 Irish Blood, English Heart Morrissey Staggeringly powerful live.
71 Out of Time Blur Tasteful, nice enough.. bah boo play Parklife!
72 Jesus Walks Kanye West Fantastic overblown pompous nonsense.
73 Dakota Stereophonics Plastic fm-rock garbage.
74 I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor Arctic Monkeys A horrible song in all respects. People say Alex Turner is a good lyricist. "Oh, there ain't no love, no Montagues or Capulets Are just banging tunes and DJ sets and... Dirty dancefloors, and dreams of naughtiness!" On hearing that I'm inclined to ask what they're smoking and if I can have some. The most tragic thing is he probably thought the reference to Romeo and Juliet was like, really clever.
75 Parabola Tool blah
76 Rehab [CD 1] Amy Winehouse My mums boyfriend plays this so much I'm utterly sick of it.
77 Stan Eminem A really interesting single at the time.
78 House of Jealous Lovers The Rapture Punk-funk, post punk whatever, its just not for me.
79 The Great Beyond R.E.M. R.E.M by numbers where they even trying at this point?
80 Icky Thump The White Stripes Fairly disappointing album, but this is great. Like AC/DC jamming with White Light/White Heat era Velvets.
81 Pull Shapes The Pipettes Ha, I love it.
82 Tribute Tenacious D For a "comedy" record this actually makes cats macros seems funny by comparison.
83 Neighborhood #2 (Laika) Arcade Fire My favourite Arcade Fire song.. not that thats saying much.
84 Schism Tool Yes, Tool.. again.
85 Say Hello to the Angels / NYC Interpol Nice to see you again Interpol.
86 In the Morning Junior Boys Don't know it.
87 Me and Giuliani Down by the Schoolyard (A True Story) !!! Don't know it.
88 Don't Look Back Into the Sun The Libertines I can't work out why I and so many others got so excited about the Libertines. Truth by told this is average. Time For Heroes should be here instead.
89 Know Your Onion! The Shins The Shins leave me a bit cold, like a lot of American collegy indie.
90 Munich Editors A Joy Division tribute band (Interpols) very own tribute band.
91 F.E.A.R. Ian Brown Browny's best solo moment.
92 Man of the Hour Pearl Jam I've not heard this. I bet its crap.
93 Mad World (feat. Gary Jules) Michael Andrews I loathe Donnie Darko, but I loved this getting to Christmas Number One, its was surreal.
94 Keep the Car Running / Broken Window Arcade Fire You know what I think of Arcade Fire by now..
95 Don't Panic Coldplay Do you know what? The bit at the end where Chris Martin sings "ohh yeaah" its actually really nice, the rest of it I struggle to even remember.
96 Feel Good Inc. Gorillaz Damon Albran is a very clever boy. I actually think Demon Days was the best album he ever did under any name.
97 Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken Camera Obscura I so SHOULD love Camera Obscura, but the love won't come.
98 The Masses Against the Classes Manic Street Preachers Ha how the FUCK did this get in the top 100?! This is the Manics shark jump point of no return is you ask me. Witless unintentional self parody.
99 No Cars Go / Surf City (Eastern Block) Arcade Fire GROAN!
100 You Only Live Once The Strokes Don't remember this one? Whistle it for me.

I don't think that Sia song would be in the list were it not for its appearance in the Six Feet Under series finale. It's a great montage scene and the song is wonderful with it, but whether it stands on its own merits is another story. Sia sung with Zero 7, if that helps.
