high cholestrol is genetic. I have high cholestrol and I'm not obese That annoying overplayed commercial for some cholesterol lowering drug likes to point out that it's either genetics or food. My father eats an extremely healthfully yet has high cholesterol.

I wonder if it's bad to eat no cholesterol at all. You don't eat cholestrol. My memory's pretty fuzzy, but it's part of your blood. eating too many saturated fats --> high cholestrol. Reasonable levels of other types of fat --> keeps cholestrol down.

I'm a little surprised that this cover is causing people to condemn obesity in this way. Maybe I've been living in the American Midwest for too long, but honestly, do any of you know any really obese people? Do you know anything about it at all?
Just because someone is "fat" doesn't mean a thing about their eating habits. Genetics has a much larger role in body size than anyone wants to admit. I know plenty of skinny people who eat like pigs day in and day out and don't exercise at all, yet don't gain a single pound, whereas my mother (who has been very obese for my entire life) can go on any number of diets and not lose any weight. In fact, the only time in her life she lost any weight was when she just said "fuck it" and started eating whatever she wanted to.
I am not saying in any way that it's good to be fat, or that it's not a health risk, but jesus, do we really need to be going around saying that more than it's already being said? Trust me; every single fat person KNOWS that their lives would be "better" if only they were skinnier. They're told many times a day by all sorts of people, but honestly, it's better to just let the "fat" thing go and focus on making people healthy. Beth Ditto might actually be REALLY healthy for all we know. She does have to be pretty fit to be able to perform so often. Did anyone consider that maybe it's just hereditary?
In any case, people have a right to be fat if they want to, just like they have the right to drink and smoke and do other stupid things that endanger their health. It's nobody's business but their own.

Nope, you aren't missing anything; he's just being a jerk.
And I like what you have to say. Who are we to comment on a situation that is not our own and that we therefore cannot fully understand?

It's nobody's business but their own. It's true that genetics do play a part. But it's VERY rare for someone to be "morbidly obese" (in the bmi index sorta way) genetically. I hate to go all teenager on you, but my mum has been working as a nurse for a long time and is currently doing a degree on the matter, and she has told me that it's a 1 in a million case (and I've read up on it, too). I'm not talking say being 20 pounds 'overweight' here, I'm talking SERIOUS obesity. Beth Ditto may be genetically fat, I wouldn't know, but she has said in interviews that it's down to her enjoying food too much (that's not meant to be a negative thing). And as it's been previously said, she has decided to make a big deal about her weight, and therefore opens herself up to all criticism, whether it good, bad or just plain stupid.

I think it's a sad fact that people feel they have to criticise others for there weight yes.. shes makes a big deal of it now, since the nme cool list victory and all that, etc..
But lets not forgot the Gossip had been banging around for years before NME jumped on the bandwagon and all I EVER heard from people about them was "oh it's that band with the fat bird" etc.. people made a big deal about her weight before she made a big deal about her weight is all I'm saying. Maybe shes reached the stage where she thinks "fuck it" and has to decided to use it to her advantage?

Well right, it's hard to be a morbidly obese marathon-running vegan, but honestly, who eats perfectly all the time? My point is that it shouldn't be a crime for someone to eat ice cream or a hamburger just because their genes say it's gonna go straight to their thighs while their skinny friend sitting next to them gets to finish the whole thing and has some french fries and a milkshake to wash it down. And again, even if Beth Ditto wants to make a statement (a statement which I happen to agree with on some level), that's not exactly an open door to go around vilifying ALL obese people. I believe the general idea she's trying to convey is that it's okay to not fit into the normal standards of beauty that are generally forced upon the public by most media outlets. I hardly think she really means that getting clogged arteries and needing a bypass at age 40 is a walk in the park.

hey, if their skinny friend constantly eats a lot of fatty foods, chances are the symptoms will manifest themselves in completely different, way more serious ways than a bit of cellulite.
I am not claiming to be a saint when it comes to eating, but if I had a problem such as CHD, diabetes or even something as shallow as becoming fat (to me, it is not attractive) then I'd go out of my way to fix it.
My problem is people who have problems, but refuse to fix them. To me, being obese is a problem because it affects you in detremental ways (whether anyone chooses to admit it or not), hence my problem with Beth Ditto. I just find some of her views to be a bit 'off'. but free speech an' all that et cetera...

I just find some of her views to be a bit 'off'. but free speech an' all that et cetera... well, this is where I start to have a problem with your argument because it's getting personal and judging people and their actions based on YOUR standards of what's attractive and acceptable as a way of life. maybe it's not as big of a deal to them, and they'd rather spend their life doing something more meaningful, or maybe they don't think they're as ugly as you apparently do. Going by your logic, if I thought your nose was grotesquely huge and didn't like the way you drove, I should have you in surgery tomorrow morning and take away your driver's license because the first is unattractive and the second is "dangerous". and now I'm getting a bit rude. My apologies. I think I'm going to have to just agree to disagree with you on this one and let it go. I'm used to being in the minority on this issue; no big deal.
