Well since game #1 Mario has always had little secret areas that take you to other parts of the level, but I agree it's definitely not on the same level as Sonic. However, Sonic 1 didn't come out until Super Mario World. The other Mario games predate it significantly so comparing them to Sonic in terms of a level's "bigness" doesn't really seem fair. Yes, I realise this thread is srs bsns. Even if you consider the fact that Super Mario World was released a year before Sonic 1, Sonic 1 was the first game in the series and had MUCH better levels of exploration/alternate routes. Even Super Mario World was a big line of walking left to complete the level, and it was what, the 4th game in the series? All it had was the occasional warp pipe to a slightly different room (admittedly the secret exits were hella sick). Hell, most of the game could be cheesed with a cape. I remember just flying over whole levels with that badboy. Super Mario World is so unbelievably easy, with Yoshi and the Cape. Even the "hardest" level (In the secret area after the star room) can be beaten exceptionally easily if you acquire a blue Yoshi from Star World 2. Sonic the Hedgehog had better music, graphics and playstyle than any of the Mario games and it was faster and harder (anyone remember Scrap Brain Zone Act 3? Holy shit. Or the rage inducing labyrinth that was Sandopolis Act 2. Jesus fuck). Sonic > Mario in my opinion

what about yoshi's island/wario games? admittedly they are fucking great (still prefer sonic) because they aren't as linear as the "proper" mario games

cry. also, case in point: there's another thing that makes sonic more awesome than mario - DROWNING.

I hate drowning! NOT AWESOME JAY! NOOOO! That is my least favourite thing about the post-16-bit Mario games. And Sonic is AWFUL at swimming. But to be fair he is a hedgehog. Also, hi snorlaxio, I don't think I've ever really spoken to you before. *waves* You makes some good points about SMW but honestly I have found the sonic games I've played easier than the later stages of SMW, and although you can cheese through some of the levels on your cape, the game is obviously aware of the fact and hides stuff up above for the player, and stops you from being able to do this in many of the levels (needing to find a secret exit to progress, moving screen, ceiling, wall, whatever.) I also think the fact that the level progression in Mario 3 and World is non-linear and you can choose whether to play one level or the other or both makes up for the less-developed alternate routes within individual levels. And I think there's a case for the awesomeness of Mario music, but that ultimately is down to preference. As is all of this, I guess.

Anna, you sick fuck, take me now! *swoons* After we make sick depraved love we'll lock the butler in the fridge. In TR3 there were monkeys and I liked getting Lara killed by them.

Mario is of course better than Sonic. Mainly because I own this game for the NES:

Did anyone play 'Echo the Dolphin'? I had it for the megadrive and I played it til it broke...which wasn't actually very long...but I was bad at it. I then had a version for the PC, which I thought was amazing at the time, must have been around Windows '98! XD
