man i had so much of that stuff on the pc, can't be arsed transferring it though. did you ever play the snes final fantasy games? they had the best fucking music ever seriously, in fact generally final fantasy games have great music, aside from the horrific leona lewis number on the latest.

Awesome music right there. <3 I'd probably have to say my favourite franchise is Pokemon also, but I'm loosing faith a little... Especially Diamond/Pearl. I still like it, but not as much as others...

Mario is my favourite franchise. All you pokemon lovers just baffle me! Although I dug that song, Rosie, as a fan of Red/Blue with little interest in the other. Sarah, I don't see it as apples and oranges. Mario is the mother of all 2D side-scrolling platformers and Sonic is its direct descendant. I think it's perfectly reasonable to compare the two. Halo and Tetris are apples and oranges. But I get what you mean, Sonic is faster and flashier and that appeals to some, which is more than fair. As a long time Mario-player now just getting into Sonic, I find some of the level details just odd. All these loop-de-loops and whatnot just seem a little pointless to me, but eh. And YAY FF music! Anyone who doesn't love FF, I challenge you to actually exist.

Loop-de-loops are not only hella cool but can be used by decent players to rack up speed (if you jump at just the right angle at the top, and hit the bottom at about a 45 degree angle into a roll you gain a huge amount of momentum, especially valuable in Sonic 1's physics engine (hold forward whilst rolling and you're limited to max speed, no spindash, etc)). Also Sonic 1-3&K often have alternate paths through which you can complete a level, something that wasn't really prevalent in Mario until Super Mario World (Super Mario Bros. 2 UK/US doesn't count, that's Doki Doki Panic with a Mario veneer). Yeah i'm that cool.

Well since game #1 Mario has always had little secret areas that take you to other parts of the level, but I agree it's definitely not on the same level as Sonic. However, Sonic 1 didn't come out until Super Mario World. The other Mario games predate it significantly so comparing them to Sonic in terms of a level's "bigness" doesn't really seem fair.
Yes, I realise this thread is srs bsns.

sonic had better bonus levels as well, mario only had tunnels where you could go collect coins... boring. ;D
