I have no interest whatsoever in post-16 bit gaming but while Sonic was always "cooler" winning on graphics and style... the Super Mario Brothers adventures were a much more varied and satisfying gaming experience.
I was playing the original NES Super Mario Brothers the other day and thinking how impressive the "physics" of the game are... possibly one of my nerdiest moments.

I wish I still had my N64 and could play Super Mario Kart. It never was that funny with sonic. wich do you prefer for GameBoy - Super Mario Land (1) or Super Mario Land 2? Also, don't forget Kirby!

2, romi, but really niether one live up to the Mario title set by the NES and SNES games, IMO.
Sonic is the only other 2D platforming franchise that comes close to Mario in depth and intricacy of level design, but Mario still comes out on top, I think. Just look at Super Mario World vs. the first Sonic game. They both came out around the same time, but I think there's a clear winner there.
Also Mario had some awesome spin-offs. The Wario Land games are great (I'm enjoying the Wii one immensely at the moment) and the Yoshi's Island games. The first Yoshi's Island is actually my favourite game of all time ever. It's the absolute perfect platform experience.
And Josh, I had a similar geeky moment! With Mario I can always know exactly when I'll jump and land, and if I die, it's all my fault. I don't quite have the same confidence in Sonic.
GO NERD!

^ most of the people in the art group I use to help at in my job had a scarily indepth knowledge of 2-d Sonic and Mario and a lot of them were like 16-18. They WERE all autistic though....

the 2d games were made between 1989-1995 but you don't have to have been alive when a game was made to enjoy it

Right Sarah. And retro gaming is experiencing a renaissance what with all the old 2D classics being released on various current-gen systems. Something I'm really enjoying because by-and-large mainstream gaming is going in directions that aren't for me.
I'm having a blast playing Sonic 3 at the moment, but Mario still wins hands down.

tbh it's a bit of an apples v oranges thing. what i don't like about mario games is the slow pace and the music, aside from the wario games you mentioned which are fucking awesome and yoshi's island is pretty sick. fun fact: michael jackson composed some (or all, i can't remember) of the music for sonic 3

I spent SOOO much of my childhood cracking 'Sonic The Hedgehog' on the Sega Megadrive...then I suddenly realised that I was ADDICTED and kinda gave up video gaming :/ I still play it sometimes though, and I have to vote Sonic simply because I loved it so much.

fun fact: michael jackson composed some (or all, i can't remember) of the music for sonic 3 seriously??? i fucking loved the songs on that game. ;D i chose sonic. sorry, my first console was a megadrive and obviously i got all the sonics for it and only experienced a NES when i went to germany because my cousin had one.. it had tetris and the first mario bros. i wasn't too into it. i was a big sonic the comic fan as well, and loved the cartoon. i'm a bigger mario fan now though, thanks wii.
