I think that guns, like hunting guns, should be legal. But do we REALLY need semi-automatic weapons and "police killer" style bullets? I mean, no one is going to hunt deer or pheasants with that. All the gun violence here is disgusting. Srsly. There's no reason for semi-autos, but if people really want them.. there's always the black market.

Good point, karatepop. It should most definetly be legal, but people should pursue adoption options first. I disagree. Partly because I think the foster care system needs to be totally re-evaluated, and partly because that's simply not an option for some people. Just being pregnant is a big deal, and carrying a child for nine months is not easy. I could never do that only to give it up. Foster care is a death sentence for the spirit, which is far worse as far as I'm concerned. Not foster care! Adoption! Big difference. Its much easier to get an adoption when the child isn't born yet. You can even meet the parents.

All the gun violence here is disgusting. yes but its a constitutional right to bear arms. It didn't say all arms. and besides, that was created at a time of (how do you put it?) less effective guns...

Wait, wait, wait, I thought of another one. MADDY FITSHERFACE. Yes, I feel bad for the family, but it's a classic case of "Missing White Girl Syndrome." I don't think the Daily Mail would give a fuck if she were black. Before I start - I agree with what Jam said. The parents are irresponsible and frankly I think their behaviour throughout has been somewhat odd. But I think it's unfair to talk about that syndrome thing. It is true - it does happen, and it's a load of bullshit that the whole things happened this way. But that's not what's important. There's a poor wee girl who has barely lived missing, and most likely dead. That's a fucking tragedy, and it kind of pisses me off when people act so nonchalant about it. Each time a child is snatched it's horrible; just because this case is overexposed does not make it any less tragic! I'm not saying it's not tragic - it is. I'm just saying it's a classic example of racism in our society. I can't imagine what the parents are going through, and I have no wish to ever experience anything like it. But it's true - think of the last few young girls who went missing in the UK and had their cases exposed on national media. How many weren't white? Also, re guns: they terrify me, but I understand why people want them. Therefore I would encourage people to go out and EDUCATE themselves about guns and how they work. Don't be an idiot with a firearm, folks. Finally, adopting children: to even "give away" your child is hard enough in the UK. A lot of the time, the nurses will try to force women to breastfed and spend a lot of time with the newborn in order to encourage her to bond with her child so she'll change her mind. Harsh stuff.

But the 2nd amendment only applies to the fedgov, not the states. It's the glory of selective incorporation. So, technically, DC's gun laws WERE legal. I don't think a single person can say they need semi automatic guns, even for protection.

You'd be sorry then, that you didn't have your semi/aka/granade launcher in your closet without the saftey locks on them.

But it's a tricky subject to rally that cause because you have the whole issue of the missing person. I just don't really think it's the best place to deal with racism. If you deal with the prejudices in other areas then eventually this will stop happening; or at least, that's how it should work.

We could... Burn down the head offices of the Daily Mail...? That could be a start?
I could post some Socialist ramble about the bourgeois hegemony and the division of the working class, but it's a bit too late and I'm a bit too sober for that, and it would all be tongue in cheek because I am a RUBBISH radical.
PS - SSP innocent, Tommy Sheridan bastard.
