hm, I don't see it getting all that bad. You've been here two months. I don't mean anything bad by it, but you wouldn't see it getting bad. More on MSN convos - have them, please! Too many threads have pages and pages of back and forth convos between two people that have nothing (or little) to do with the thread. edit: I really don't want to sound mean haha...I like most of the new people! A lot! Yeah, the new people do seem to be quite nice. It's just kind of frustrating when there is a thread that had the potential to be interesting, but just turns into a wee backpatting between a few users. Rebekah: People DO try to have discussions, but it gets stunted by people having conversations. It's difficult to have a discussion when two people keep replying "LOLZ" every two seconds on a thread about paedophillia. This kind of board wasn't built for that kind of thing. I wish more boards were set up like the Drowned in Sound one. You can have ridiculous long in-jokes and doesn't affect discussion at all. Fair enough to have a laugh and chat shit, it's fun and we ARE here for enjoyment after all, but there's a line where it just goes beyond a joke.

I get where Rebekah's coming from, i mean, it seems like y'all are just like "get out get out get out!" geesh. A pretty simplistic and sensationalist interpretation of the point being made. i wasn't interpreting the whole point. i'm just saying that they way you put it makes it seem that way, you know? i know what you ARE saying though. just convey it better?

If you get what he's saying - why are you nitpicking? It's somewhat patronising to expect other people not to understand. I mean, he DOES actually state that he's not trying to target new members because they are new. It's purely coincidental. EDIT: I just realised I was going to bed. Good night everyone x

besides don't take anything I say like its gospel, it's only my take on things.
It might spark a small amount of discord but I'd rather come out and say this stuff than let if fester or bitch behind close doors. I think y'all deserve honesty.

Yes, yes, I know he says that. but the whole tone of the piece seems to disagree with that.

Well in the name of honesty... do you think we could all never use 'y'all' again? Ever. Just a query for a 'n00b' here. On which part of this forum could you have a topic about philosophy or theology? And what is with the 'exalt' and 'smite', and are they directly connected to the size of the poster's penis?

Point 1- Duly noted. Point 2- Common Room, post away. Theology is a strong suit of mine. Point 3- Nah, it's not, it's big post count= big errmm feet apparently.

"I don't want to be harsh, I don't take pleasure from it, but in this instance I think it's necessary"

What I'm saying is. "think before you press send" You know, I agree with this to an extent. I've read lots of things that I couldn't care less about, and I can't imagine anyone else actually caring about. But everyone is guilty of this at one point or another. But saying "think before you reply" is going to make some people feel very self-conscious, and maybe they won't reply at all because they're too scared of upsetting someone.

Well then their filter is up too high. It's not a matter of pleasing everybody on the board with every post, it's just not pissing off the active majority with every post. That's over simplifying it a little, but it still stands.

Really, it's the same as "think before you speak", which is really just saying, "use common sense", so I don't see the problem with it. If people want to take others' opinions that seriously and just stop posting, then there isn't much anyone can do. I think this board is a pretty lovely place with many nice, caring personalities, but things can't be "happyhappyjoyjoy" all the time. There's always going to be a point where someone just needs to vent.
I agree with Mimicry.

I am terribly sorry if I have contributed to this at all. Truth is, I've lurked around this board for a looong time, and finally got the courage to start posting not but a short while ago. I really do try to make my posts count though and will continue to do so.

This doesn't happen very often, so please mark today in your Calender of Important Events, but I agree with Josh. The most frustrating thing is that I created the Forum Forum for the two-way verbal exalting that was going on in the Common Room, to keep the Common Room free for discussion.
This is not to say that every thread needs to be phenomenal - I'm a big fan of 'The Disney Thread', after all - as long as they say something that's of interest to more than one small sub-section of people, ie. your best mate and someone you chat to on MSN. That said, I'd agree with Laura when she says this is usually what happens over the Summer; it happened last year, and the year before that, so I'm not taking it to seriously at the moment.
However, if people would like to think before they post - something along the lines of, 'will this make any sense to anyone outside of my imediate friendship group?' or 'will this please our glorious and most awesome leader, Michael Bush, enough that he won't plunge me into the firey depths come Judgement Day?', you know the thing - I would be very grateful.
Cheerio, Michael. xxx
