So, these young whippersnappers have been a big noise in indieland for quite some time now and I've enjoyed listening to them intermittently since late year.
I remember toward the end of my favourite decade (90s case you have to ask) there was a real feeling that rock/guitar music was "dead" and to be replaced by electronic dance music, the rock star by the superstar DJ etc.. interesting to see over ten years how that dance culture has been just another element assimilated into the rock/pop melting pot.
I say this cos to me The xx sound like trip hop (Massive Attack etc) being played by the traditional guitar/bass/drums and informed by indie culture.
I like them but I haven't really sunk my teeth fully in, I feel. As the whole album could be called rather samey, I think though the goal was to create an album that was about a sustained mood, and that their sound would be better enjoyed live or though a very expensive set of speakers to fully immerse yourself.
Any thoughts?

I get so confused, someone please clarify, The XX aren't anything to do with Xerox Teens who changed their name to XX Teens or something a few years back? Bands with similar names drive me crazy. Did they change their name again?

Judging from the stuff I read on Wikipedia The xx is not the new name of XX Teens, so those are two different bands. I only have heart a few songs of The xx, but judging from the ones I know, I like the music. Here I get to the point where I usually fail: trying to discribe the music and what I like about it. I'd say they are really good. I found this cover they made of a song called Teardrops (originally sung by Womack & Womack) on youtube. I absolutely dislike it in the orginal, but I like the cover.

Oh okay, when I get over my annoyance for their confusing and samey name (this has lasted for several months) then I might give them a listen.

I really like them, but i've never got round to buying an album or anything. But they've made quite individual music and think, and I really respect that

It's really quite nice stuff. One of the songs on their album sounds a bit like Wicked Game by Chris Isaak.

They're friends of a friend, I didn't realise they were getting as popular as they apparently are :s When did this happen?

I thought they'd "done a Florence+The Machine/Vampire Weekend" (translation= bands I get into with no idea they're actually really popular.. cos I live in a bubble).. I've seen them in the media a lot recently, if that's translated into sales I have no idea.

Possible, but I don't know. In Germany they are not hyped yet, I think, but actually I don't claim to be up to date. (I avoid listening to radio and watching MTV or something, since most of the time it's just not the music I want to hear.) On last.fm they are on page 6 of the popular music list even before Florence + The Machine by the way. (Yes, I was bored and looked it up. ;D )

they're massively hyped and plugged...getting played on all the tv shows trying to catch the latest thing on their soundtracks, etc...
but the album is damn good, and they've a great live show. though what it's like now they're down to just 3 people, i'm not sure. the album works really well as an album. which is rare enough these days. they've got a good sound.

i really like their vocals. they don't go for any major fancy stuff, sometimes you might even think it's cause they can't sing...but i rarely find myself thinking about it. it just suits the music perfectly. it's almost a little like the moldy peaches gone over to the cure.

I don't know about the Moldy Peaches comparison, but otherwise I do agree that the vocals are very good. I like how understated they are, it is sometimes hinted that at least the female has quite a range, but she chooses not to use it. Is that too pretentious to say?
