Both me and my dad love Going To A Town and we have Rufus! Rufus! Rufus! Does Judy! Judy Judy! recorded on our tv, as one of the things labelled Don't Delete This Or I Will Kill You (along with Patrick at Glastonbury) and i watch it sometimes.
My dad said said whilst watching this once that he wished he was gay because then he would get to wear all the good clothes. I think i told him that if he wore leopard print leggings* and he was my parent, i would burn him.
*These looked good on Rufus Wainwright though

and as for 'release the stars' there are plenty of good songs on there and obviously i like the album BUT I still think it pales in comparison to 'rufus wainwright' or 'poses' that have really inspiring/inspired tunes/vocals/lyrics on them... Poses and Want One are the stand out albums for me. Poses is one of the most beautiful records I've ever heard. Once me and Liz were watching one of his Judy Garland performances on youtube and came to the conclusion that he'd be a fun dad.

MEGA MEGA BUMP!
Sorry, I was bound to do it at some point.
I know only about 3 people, if that, would be involved in this discussion, but I got the new album today and I was wondering what your opinions were. On first listen I didn't come away thinking "Wow, this is the best thing I've ever heard," but there were definitely some amazing songs and although right now it's difficult to percieve them a becoming regulars in his set or classics, in a year or two I can see Martha, The Dream and Who Are You New York being very popular (amongst the true Rufus fans rather than the ones who know him as "the singer from Shrek")
The piano instrumentation is the album's strongest point and the melodies are some of his best. The vocal melodies are sometimes lacking and sadly I think most of the songs lyrically lack their usual beauty. However I think the lyrics in this album are more subtle and personal, which is great, but this isn't an album for first time Rufus listeners.

There's definitely no end to all the new albums I'm interested in hearing this year, and this came out of nowhere since I haven't been up to date with Rufus news since sometime after Want Two, so I haven't given it nearly enough time to judge it all yet. However, I already consider Martha one of his better songs. I agree with what you're saying about it not being for the first-time listener, but at least Who Are You New York brings his recent Judy Garland and such musical ventures to mind, so maybe it's time for a new audience for this one? To my ears, this is definitely a step in the right direction, considering the fact that I haven't been able to get into anything he's done since Want Two. Then again, it's also boring me a bit, so I guess we'll see later on this year if it managed to get my attention. Too many "late night" albums this year... /t

I picked it up earlier today. Just started listening to it now, but I read an article in the metro about it today and I'm excited by the prospect of an all piano/vocals album. In the article it said that when he was making it his mother said something to the effect of she could see it being a good thing to see live, but not necessarily listen to. I can sort of hear that, but it really will be amazing to see him replicate this live (and I know he can do it).
I was in HMV and couldn't find the album in the new releases so I went to the alphabetical listing and I was staring right at it for a few minutes (without realizing) until finally a salesperson asked me what I was looking for, handed me a copy (he was carrying about 20) and kindly pointed at all the copies right in front of me.
The point of that story was that I had not seen the album art until today, and I do not like.

Yes I dislike the album art. And the picture inside the booklet i just dreadful! I've never seen a worse picture than him. His boyfriend did the handwriting font and I guess its nice to look at, but when trying to read the lyrics it's so difficult!
