I finally got 'Release the Stars' in the post this morning, wasn't really sure what to expect as I didn't really like 'Want II' much (although I love the first three albums) but I have to so that so far I love it. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews of it saying it was 'hard' to listen to, but I pretty much 'got' it on the first listen. Any other opinions on it/ him?

I've got mixed emotions... I definitely like it, and it's one of those albums that (to my ears) needs a few listens, which means that it'll last longer than, say, a new Killers album.
On the other hand, I think it's a bit heavy, production wise. Which brings me to what I really loved with Want II... The more direct approach...
Then again, I've been wrong before, and it might become one of the best albums of the year, when it's gotten some more time.

I'm still not sure about it; it's taken me a long time to get into it, and there are some bloody good songs on there, but there are also a fair few tiresome dirges. Want One was his masterpeice, but Want Two was seriously lacking, and I think it was always going to take something uber-impressive to, erm, impress me.
That said, I heart 'Nobody's Off The Hook' so bad.
Cheerio, Michael. xxx

I love both Want albums a lot, but One got me hooked on Rufus. I think his first album was just incredible though. Release the Stars gets an enthusiastic 'meh' from me. I do like it, but I think it's lacking in some ways, and almost seems a bit forced. 'Between My Legs,' 'Tiergarten,' 'Sanssouci,' and 'Slideshow' win on that one imo. I've completely taken 'Nobody's Off the Hook' and 'Not Ready to Love' off my Rufus playlist

I was wondering if there would be other Rufus fans here, good to see that there are. I agree with what's been said, i've been into Rufus for years, before the sudden explosion of interest in him, which I see as a really great thing. I was dissapointed when I heard 'Going to a town', it was dirge. Which is a shame...the album is alright but there's nothing as stand out as Go or Go Ahead, Poses or April Fools on there...lets hope it's a grower. I have tickets to see him twice on tour and that is something I would reccomend. He always puts on a show...one tour involved stripping down to the thong, tiara and high heels for the encore. He's so talented musically...and performance wise, i think he's up there with Patrick in terms of entertaining. Oh, and he's a lovely bloke too Jess xxx

I haven't gotten the new album yet, but I didn't like the Want albums as much as his previous ones. I still love him though, and hope this album is better than Want One or Two.

yeah I'm still waiting for it. I was hooked after I saw the release of Hedwig and found out he did a really awesome cover of the Origin Of Love.
want one and two have his most ambitious work. Poses was a drag-er of an album for me. I never could fully listen to it.

I still have mixed feelings about it, even after listening to it loads. I actually love 'going to a town' but I think it was a crap choice for first single. I just think the album is a bit... not so much a disappointment as such because I wasn't sure what to expect, but just not amazing.
I think the title track is an absolutely amazing finale to it all though. And I love individual songs, I just think that as an album I don't like it as much as any of the previous four albums.
But like Tommy said, maybe it will grow on me, and one day I will just fall in love with it. Hmm

Do you reckon Rufus Wainwright is gay? I mean I'm sorry to pry into his personal life and theres certainly nothing wrong with that, but I think in his lyrics, interviews and general dress and behavior there are some really subtle hints that he is, that someone with a very sophesticated gaydar might just pick up on. Nah I'm probably just being silly..

I love his voice so much but have never been bowled over by any of the songs that I've heard

Wait...are we actually debating about whether he's gay or not? I'm not really sure it was that much of a debate to be honest, someone asked a question and I contributed what little knowledge I had, it's not really that big a deal

Ha, well if anyone is truly wondering.. and I hope they aren't because it is obvious.. He has a boyfriend. I am hoping this was one big ball of sarcasm and irony.

...I think Josh was making a joke. Rufus Wainwright is surely as famously "out" as Jake Shears, George Michael and Elton John.

Oh, I know that, that wasn't really my point. I have a Rufus website, and I still occasionally get e-mails asking me if he really is gay. It was more of a generalized thing. Besides, I just really like that picture, and I just had to post it.

I've read a couple where he hasn't brought it up himself, but it has been brought up by the interviewer. That's somewhat the same thing though.

He seems to talk a lot about political issues regarding gay people in interviews, do you think he see's himself as some sort of spokesperson for gay issues? Sort of a gay Bob Marley, haha.
