I love Marianne Faithful. I think the fact that it is her makes the song more nostalgic.

i can't stand the section from like 2minutes to 2:30 because i hate it when in any song the music just plays sporadically, if the piano kept up for that section i'd really like the song cause i like her voice and i like how the two voices go together. and hten i love when the piano builds in again and she goes run along, run along etcetcetc. i love marianne faithful, i think she's an incredable woman and i think she fits the song perfectly, if it just weren't for that little bit.
anyway, i think the piano and strings in this song are beautiful and the dynamics too. and the part where she goes "still we sing" and he goes "ooohooohoohoh" kind of reminds me of phantom of the opera....

I absolutely adore this song more than I can say with any kind of eloquence. It is absolutely stunning, so moving, so majestic, so chilling... It's just so overwhelming! So there we go, my love for Magpie!

sounds just like Marianne Faithful. Exact same voice. If you ever come down to the theme park where Rhiannes dad lives (or something...) then you will discover this for yourself. And no I didn't take that picture for myself. The joys of google images. Anyway, Magpie = a Patrick Wolf song which I don't like. Possibly the only one. As well as not liking Mariannes voice, I don't like Patricks voice in it. I do not like any of the lyrics. I find them un-interesting. The music also does nothing for me. I dunno, the entire arrangement of the song just bugs me to death. There is not one part of it which I enjoy, so I always just skip it.

Wow! Who's he!?! He's hott!
Anyway... I just feel like it's really sad when people say they don't like this song. I don't feel like I should start arguing or start telling them they should love it and that they're wrong. I just feel really sad... I've become so attached to this song that I feel like it's just such a gem - something really beautiful... so I just feel sad that some people don't have this song in their lives.
As sad as that might sound, it's true. I just adore every beat of this song.

this song was one of the first i heard of Patrick's because it was so highly recommended, and yeah, it freaked me out a bit. i absolutely love it now. its like some warped fairytale, unlike anything i've ever heard before. such incredible talent.

I was (and still am) an avid Marianne Faithfull fan before I heard this song and this track fully confirms her genius. And Patrick's. The fact that he is a boy and she is a magpie is absolutely brilliant in my books.

the actual birds themselves are pretty annoying, not only does one bring you sorrow unless you salute it, but there were 5 outside my bedroom window a few days ago all laughing, which woke me up. arrrrgh. they do look nice though. and i love the piano playing in the song. S'all good. magpie rant over.

I love this song so much, just how he made the poem into a song. It's so patrick wolf aswell, obviously. It's so lovely live, when i saw him Bishi did the other voice. I guess she doesn't always do it live with him, but it was really great when she did. not only does one bring you sorrow unless you salute it, magpie rant over. I kind of like that about them, makes them more interesting. Also my mum always told me t say "morning mr magpie" to them, to stop getting cursed or whatever. I always say it:)

I love this song! It reminds me of a cold, rainy night at Uni when I just listened to it on repeat and absorbed all the beauty from it. The piano is gorgeous, the strings are haunting and Patrick's voice ... well it speaks for itself!
'Magpie, was it you who stole the wedding ring? But what other theiving bird would steal such hope away' - What a lyric!

So Marianne Faithful does the other voice?!! I cannot beleive that, because I could have sworn it was a male voice.. haha oh gawd! I thought the other voice belonged to Patrick who was trying to sound creepy (like a mean, old witch from a fairytale lol) and funny and all things like that :---------D and then I come here to find out that the other voice actually belongs to A WOMAN. now how wmbarrassing is that, huh?! I think I won. I thought it was Patrick changing his voice at first, too. It surprised me, more than anything, mostly because I wasn't aware he had done collaborations. I'm also a huge Tori Amos fan, and she occasionally changes her voice in songs as well. I was intrigued by it, though. I had honestly never heard of Marianne Faithfull before this song, but I really love her voice. Yes, it's one you have to get used to, because it's something different, but I think that's what makes it beautiful. I also love that he plays with gender perceptions with the females he picks to sing with: Marianne Faithfull, whose range is lower than his, and Eliza Carthy in "The Bachelor", whose voice sounds masculine in that song. I like it a lot. "Magpie" is a really beautiful song, and after listening to it a few times, there was one time where it just really affected me, to the point of making me tear up a bit. Just...the weight of the lyrics and the meanings behind them, and also the sounds that were used really sunk in, and it was beautiful.
