it's still my favourite. the first night I heard the album I heard it on my mp3 player while I was in bed, sort of trying to sleep (TMP is not an album to go to sleep with, it makes you wide awake, but what did I know) and I was freaked out by the knocking-sound in the background of the song. first I thought I had visitors from the other side in my room, but that was not the case, the knocking was in the song. I love love love that detail. I think this song is the most WITW-ish, so that's probably why it is my favourite.

i love the piano solo at the end.. and the way he suddenly stops singing and starts talking.. i was prepared to dislike this one as i didn't like it live very much but it has really grown on me...

I agree, best song off The Magic Position. When I first saw the podcast version, I watched it over and over. It's one of those tingerly songs

Maybe it's just because i've had to read the damn book for the last two years for my Medieval Subjects of Desire class, but alot of the themes in the song are similiar to those of St Augustines Confessions. The book is a bout St Augustines telling Good about his unruly earthly desires and lusts and how he wants to try and transfer these desires to something better.
Now whenever i hear this song i think of the book, and everytime i read the book the song pops into my head (and makes it failry more enjoyable.) Similiar thing happens when i read His Dark Materials, The Distillers Coral Fang pops into my head cos i was listening to that album when i first read it.
Damn that was one hell of a fucking ramble.
Yeah anyway, wonder if Patrick got any inspiriration from the St Augustines Confessions for this song.
Hmmmm, im pondering.
Now im not.

The lyrics to this are incredible. It's one of the smexiest and evocative songs I've heard from Paddy. Evocative of what, everyone will make their own mind up about, but I'm not telling you mine, as you'd laugh. It did make me think of Prague though, which is silly, because I'm sure he said he recorded part of this album there, I can't remember, anyway, I just returned from there last week, but have no idea why it reminds me of the place.
Prague in twilight to be exact. Ugh, how ostentatious that sounds.
Why can't I ever give justice to anything with words?
Anyways, yes, the lyrics ^_^ *melts*

Oh Michael, you make me laugh from the depths of my soul. ;D I think Augustine is a fantastic song, that only gets better the more you listen to it. It's definitely the highlight of an otherwise sorry album, and probably the best thing (asides from Overture) to have come out of this sorry time of Patrick's creativity. It's very seductive and yummy. Ahh, I hope he plays it again, when I see him.

I think this has absolutely become my favourite track on the album. Patrick brutalised it live on Friday though.

I've decided Augustine has the sexiest chords of any Patrick Wolf song. Especially the live version....when he starts it right after the German folk song....eg this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1OOd2xBatc

After much examination I think it'sa safe to say this is my favorite song on the album. And I love the folky song that he played as a prelude before doing it live (at MY request. get in) - in fact I thought it was going to be an introduction to the song on the album.
