Pitchfork: There's no humor on this record-- the first one was so sassy. Does humor undermine an authority that you're shooting for, or does it undermine a drama that the music could achieve? Wolf: There's a lot of humor on the first record. I think a lot of people thought I was quite ridiculous when I first came out, especially in England, and it freaked me out because what I was doing was so from my blood, from my guts. Part of being human is having a sense of humor, you know? no, ye see, i didnt find any of it funny.....am i on my own here?

I don't know. I think there's some subtle irony in there, which is part of what I like about it - it doesn't take itself absolutely seriously. That can really kill music, when people have their head so far up their arse they can't step back and appreciate the humour in themselves.
It's all down to interpretation, isn't it?

I can see why someone could see "A Boy Like Me" as humourous...

Theres definite humour in there.
A very British humour (ie convoluted and obscure).
I think he definitely played up to thenear pomposity at times in a tongue in cheek way.
Everything AND the FUCKING fdfghjkKITCHEn sink.

i didn't think it was funny either. I thought it was really serious and honest actually. But surely you can be humorous and honest at the same time - isn't honesty what most humour is based on, after all? 'It's funny because it's true'. Cheerio, Michael. xxx

I absolutely agree with Michael. I find that I can only be completely honest if I'm not taking myself completely seriously

even tho he covers lots of serious subjects in lycanthropy, i feel it has humour within some songs eg boy like me and lycanthropy> i mean the beginning statements are bold and not many other artists would make such statements!
i think its a mix of british humour, irony & honesty

I luaghed when I first heard of PW 'cutting his penis off' Really? I was freaked out. I've never really thought of Lycanthropy as a 'funny' record, maybe quirky... but I can see where people are coming from. I certainly can't see how someone would figure that TMP is dramatically less humourus than Lycanthropy, to the extent they feel the need to comment on it.

Some of the lyrics are faintly ridiculous, "I want to buy a lighthouse and ride a giraffe on the rocks" can't say that's not a bit silly. In fact all of Boy Like Me is silly, so I guess that might be where they're getting the humour from

I find The Magic Position almost more humurous. [Though I definetely see the humor in Lycanthropy]
[But, honestly, how serious can the song The Magic Position be? I know he ussually says this song is about love; but I think when I recently saw him he said it was about being mugged/drunk? It was a tad unclear.]

I have a very twisted, dark sense of humour, and I've found some parts of all of his albums funny. I mean, there are tracks that are serious, but there's a lot of very subtle wit in the lyrics, and the instrumentation. (Did anyone else pick up the accordion in Paris? Fun with stereotypes!) Telling Fenrir to eat "the ones we know who taste the best"? Also, he has some ingenious wordplay, too, like the end of Peter Pan:
"After war, comes peace. After peace, comes war. But, remember: If it weren't for fighting, We'd be fighting for ever more."
Also, A Boy Like Me is almost completely just a tongue-in-cheek way of Patrick laughing at himself.
It is a very dry kind of humour, though, so really, it depends on what you think's funny. Even Childcatcher, which is a very dark song, has a tint of very black humour (This is the age of constipation...). I agree with those above who say it's an honest humour. The funny things are a little dark. The dark things are a little funny. There's no black-and white.

I always found childcatcher to be very dark but also quite sarcastic too.
