bored/can't sleep --> me so, name them! it's a bit late, but I still wanna know (in case I missed some of the jewels of 2011) I can't really rank my choice, I love them all quite a lot. it's hard enough to choose only 5, so here they are: Lupercalia (surprise, surprise! maybe we should leave that one out... ) Biophilia ( Björk - you knew, didn't you?) Let England shake (by PJ Harvey, obviously) In the Grace of Your Love (by The Rapture) I love those boys. Can't do anything about it. And I love the album although it is soaked in religious/spiritual lyrics...which is rare for me the bloody fierce atheist. and last but by no means least - The Brothel by my dearest darling best loved singer-songwriter of the last months Susanne Sundførand a last one, because Lupercalia is out of the question anyways and therefore only counts half-ish: Ceremonials. yeah, I know it's hyped as f*ck now, but I also only love half of the songs very much (no light, no light; what the water gave me; shake it out; seven devils <3; leave my body; all this and heaven too) ohhh...five is not enough...I enjoyed Making Mirrors by Gotye very much as well and Raven in the Grave by The Raveonettes...and Shangri-La by YACHT wasn't bad at all non plus...and the Kate Bush album...and I'm not even that into her stuff that much...was a nice year for records, wasn't it? oh and Is this Hyperreal? by ATR because we had so much fun during the gigs jumping and raising our fist shouting "ACTIVATE!" and adrenaline shots and laughing about grammar in the lyrics and all that stuff... ;D "LAUTER! LAUTER!" xD Soley and Ane Brun had some nice stuff out too. okay I stop now or I won't be coming to an end feel free to violate the thread title as much as I did, I'm curious what y'all have been listening to

I think i only actually have 3 albums that were released last year. So i'll count Brumalia as an album 1. Brumalia (it depends what mood i'm in but i think i actually love it more than Lupercalia) 2. Lupercalia (of course ) 3. The Feeling - Together We Were Made (you all know about my obsession with The Feeling ) 4. Björk - Biophilia Sorry that was a bit predictable! Most of the albums i bought last year were older.

I'm usually really keen on doing these things, but despite the fact that music's more or less the most important thing in my life (second only to family etc), my recent mood swings have been keeping me from almost every type of creative outlet. But here it is! I'm linking to tracks on youtube for each album, in case anybody wants to hear. One of my "new" discoveries of 2011, which wasn't made until late last year: PJ Harvey - Let England Shake. I have been hearing so many good things about PJ for so many years, still not finding any of her albums that I actually like enough to listen to more than a couple of tracks. This one's been on repeat for a while now and it's great. The rough recordings, lyrical imagery and PJ's vocals... Wow! Austra - Feel It Break. Being an old Katie Stelmanis fan I was thrilled to hear about this new slightly more electronic version of her dramatic pop and since the album came out it's been the only one that's never left my mp3-player. Veronica Maggio - Satan I Gatan Is my Swedish "guilty pleasure" favourite of 2011. A simple, yet catchy and "real" album with a hit single that's ripped off an old The Strokes riff. ;D Jim Guthrie - The Ballad Of The Space Babies. One of the most amazing albums of 2011 (maybe even the last few years!) is Guthrie's soundtrack to the iPhone/iPad game Sword & Sworcery (GET IT, PLAY IT if you have either!) which was definitely the best game I played last year as well. Somehow it manages to combine the best bits of classic video game sounds with the music I'm currently into. For my last entry, I'm going to cheat slightly, with a bunch of EP's that when combined have more than enough songs to qualify as an album! Parenthetical Girls - Privilege, Pt. III & Pt. IV, Save Christmas, Demos For The Dreaming. Oh!, the drama, the lyrics, the synths, the Kate Bush Covers (that are sometimes actually better than the originals), the very limited edition vinyl-only EP:s (numbered with the band members' blood!). In my opinion one of the best and most underrated bands right now. Don't miss the video in the link above, it's a very special one. Actually, 2011 was a pretty good year, musically so it was hard to only pick five favourites, but I'll most likely mention all the others some other time.

I can't say I really bought too many albums this year, so I'm going to go with four:
1. Tomboy - Panda Bear: It just feels so good listening to this album.
2. Feel It Break - Austra: I think I've said it many times on this board and elsewhere this year how much I love this album. I'm also an old Katie Stelmanis fan and although this is such a departure (I think, anyway) from her first album, it is an excellent change.
3. The Rip Tide - Beirut: Definitely different from previous Beirut albums, but still fun and a bit more similar to what made me fall in love with Beirut in the beginning than March of the Zapotec. Plus I saw them play it last summer and there really is nothing better than a Beirut concert.
4. Brumalia - Patrick Wolf: My favourite thing Patrick has released in quite a long time. To me it seems like a return to Lycanthropy and yet refreshingly new at the same time.
I'm probably missing something but these stand out in my mind. And no, I guess Brumalia isn't technically an "album" but it did resonate with me more than Lupercalia.

everyone likes Austra's record and I still haven't come round to listening to it meh. I think I heard 1 or 2 songs of it... ahhh and yes shit (sorry ) I totally forgot about the Beirut album! have to listen to it asap I knew there was sth I forgot...and Apparat of course! damn...The Devils Walk could almost be in my top 5... well, I guess when I come round to it I give your choices a listen Tommy and concerning bizarre ep and vinyl fetishes : the inni limited special edition (sigur rós) comes with pieces of worn (!!! ;D) stage outfits from the boys...and light sensitive paper and all kinds of stuff no one really needs, but bizarre fans (like me) long to have ;D I'm still contemplating though...can't decide. there is also a vinyl edition which comes with 3 vinyls (!) ahhh why are they doing this to me??? so...what I meant to say...I get what you mean...at least I think so Sorry that was a bit predictable! Most of the albums i bought last year were older. predictable, yes. but that doesn't matter, because it's still a good choice

Well, not like this is a massive turn-up for the books, but 'Lupercalia' would top my albums of the year For genuinely good reason though: it was pretty much all I listened to for the first couple of months after it came out and I'm STILL not bored of it, plus it's been absolutely invaluable in cheering me up when my stack of final-year uni work has got on top of me Plus it's just lovely! Laura Marling's 'A Creature I Don't Know' would probably come next. I saw her performing it live at York Minster in October and it was absolutely magic, genuinely couldn't fault it! On CD it's not quite as powerful but it's still a good 'un Bombay Bicycle Club's 'A Different Kind Of Fix' next, there are some absolute killer tunes on there and 'Shuffle' still never fails to make me grin when I hear it. Plus 'Still' is absolutely beautiful. And then... probably 'Lifeline' by The Answering Machine (they split up in May and I miss them still, there are some great little songs on the album) and then I'm not really sure! I tend to be one of those people who buys albums two years after they've come out unless they're a band/singer I REALLY love, haha Definitely need to listen to PJ Harvey's properly as I've heard so many good things about it, I'm writing about protest music for my dissertation so I've thrown a cheeky reference to 'Let England Shake' in there!
