Disclaimer: - some people may not like this, but it's purely my opinion. These forums are for opinions, and as a long time fan and supporter of this artist, mine is as valid as anyone else's. So don't be getting your knickers in a twist.
Not a good night at all. I've seen PW 6 times, this lies floundering at the bottom of the pile.
Yes, the guy was Ill. And yes, we can all admire his fortitude in performing through adversity. But my ticket still cost the same, and the issues run far deeper than that.
This is not a good PW Wolf band. Leagues down from the Bachelor tour band who were damned near perfect. Patently the credit for that must go to Tom White - whose textures were sorely missed last night - and Marcelo Vig, whose ability to use his kit as a musical instrument as opposed to 'something to smash the hell out of' has been a vital live PW component for the last few years.
The whole sound was covered in mud and bottom end. The drummer is patently a hard rocker. Never mind the kind of ridiculous barnet that would have Michael Bolton shrieking with embarrassment, but my God, he loves his kick drum. I've never really thought about how many of Pat's songs are in 4/4 until last night. BAM ... BAM .... BAM .... BAM. Was Nick Hayward even on the stage? Or were his purely root note basslines all killed by 'Bam man'? BAM ... BAM .... BAM .... BAM. Maybe the soundman has never head of EQ?
The sound per se was just terrible. Halfway through one track I realised that Victoria, was actually playing Pat's Harp. Couldn't hear any of it. ... BAM ... BAM .... BAM .... BAM....
And the new girl? It's not really working.Yet. I don't care how many instruments she plays, she doesn't look the part, and her deft (nee, weak, inexperienced, and lacking) touch is lost amidst the chaos. Oh look she's playing guitar. Really? Can't hear a note. Piano? Eh?? Flute?? oh, yeah, good. But all we can hear is BAM ... BAM .... BAM .... BAM. Maybe she will settle in, and learn to actually look like a performer. She kind of got the vibe on 'The City' - going all Candy Dulfer and hitting front of stage. But the girl is so slight that her puffing into the sax nearly finished her off. Too much too soon? Maybe.
As for PW. From the very start he looked like he should be in bed with a thermometer hanging out of his mouth. It was 20 mins before he broke into a smile, and even that was fleeting. When he finally started talking to us Bam man got carried away and dived into the next song .. BAM ... BAM .... BAM .... BAM.
As for the set. Armistice was gorgeous, to be fair. Don't Say No was good, The City was surprisingly good (don't care for the single, but live, it works very well). A&E was just awful as none of the instruments were apparent aside from the BAM ... BAM .... BAM .... BAM. And what about the tempo? It was way down at around 90 bpm which made the whole miserable cacophony drag on for hours, without going or getting anywhere. Tempo issues affected a lot of the other songs to be honest, maybe Bam man can't move his right foot any faster?
So, on the whole, not much enjoyment at all to be had last night. Stoic, yes, lacklustre? Absolutely.
Due to traffic I missed Rowdy Superstar, but saw him in the bar later. Looks a cool guy, and I kinda regretted missing his set.
Final word for the F*****g idiot who was in front of me and my missus. Obviously dropped a tab of something just before PW came on and proceeded to ruin the enjoyment of everyone around him. 'Dancing' vigorously, SHOUTING the song words to his girlfriend, losing interest on the slower songs (WITW in particular) and manically texting. 'WOOH HOO' ing down everyone's earhole, then continually crashing into the poor blonde girl in front of him. A horrible tit of a bloke, who must surely have gotten a slap on the way of out of there, for never have I seen one man anger so many people.
Anyway, lets hope this was a blip. The sound needs a lot of work, Bam man needs to discuss his trade with Marcello on the phone asap, the new girl needs to discuss stagecraft with her boss and the lovely Victoria, and I'd suggest that some of the musical arrangments need to be revisited (where were all the middle textures?) Oh, and probably most importantly, PW needs to get some rest and throw more meds down his neck .
On the bright side, things can only get better, so good luck Bristol!
PS. No really. I'm not miffed at all that he didn't play 'House'.
