HI. So this year I've been very healthy eating loads of fruit and vegetables and not really eating sweets and chocolatey things unless I have cooked them myself. I also bought a few supplements that can be good for my brain, or good for general health (like echinacea). Anyway, I've been taking Rhodiola, and it's made me feel ridiculously creative. More creative than ever. The side effect though is insomnia and feeling quite irritated. I'm guessing because I'm small, one tablet (per day as advised) is too much, so I'm now only taking it every other.
Anyway, I AM THE BIGGEST SKEPTIC. I always think this sort of stuff is complete bollocks, I'm guessing I'm not the only one? I'm just amazed how it has really improved my brain function, it's good for memory and data intake too and so my attention span is longer than 5 minutes, as it was.
Has anyone had experience of any hippy tablets and/or whether they just feel like they wasted their money or genuinely healthier/happier?

i take vitamins for hair, skin and nails and they work fabulously. i take vegetarian omega 3, 6 and 9 (in the form of flax oil) since i don't eat fish i also take ginkgo biloba to counteract the..um... rather annoying side-effect of my anti-depressants (lack of sex drive). lol. i've never taken any supplements like you've described, though, jade. i'm interested in that one to increase your concentration because mine is AWFUL.

Ooh, I always see the hair skin and nails one, does it actually work? And how? My nails are the most brittle things ever. But yeah, it works for me, but like I said, it will possibly make you feel irritable at life and maybe a bit emotional. You're supposed to take it in the morning to lessen the chance of insomnia. I had trouble sleeping at the weekend, but I was taking one a day and I think it was too much for me. But I sat there and did about a 4 hour block of my dissertation when I've been struggling for like a year to get it done. And my brain is just in such good form, I feel like I can really articulate my thoughts verbally at the minute when it's something I really struggle with. It's Rhodiola Rosea. The one I take is Rhodiola and Ashwagandha, I'm not 100% on what the other thing does but I think together they improve your short term memory and stuff. Recommend it for when you've got lots on your plate.

it works because it's basically a multivitamin with extra oils and vitamin e which strengthens hair and nails. i don't have a lot on my plate per se but i struggle with concentration in general... i'm borderline adhd. i'm sure something like that would help. i'm going up town tomorrow for shopping so i will have a lookie! thanks!

Anyway, I've been taking Rhodiola, and it's made me feel ridiculously creative. More creative than ever. This sounds good As as child I took magnesium against my sun allergy but I haven't taken any vitamins or other supplements like you've described yet. I'll try Rhodiola.

I take magnesium and iron and vitamin D regularly. Vitamin D because there is no sun in Paris (haha just kidding, there is....rarely) and I don't go out much, so I usually don't have enough, iron because I often lack it and magnesium becauuuse, I feel better when I take it (lack of it=stressed out all the time). But these are prescribed by my doctor. I do take the stuff you get at the pharmacy without the doctor's prescription to prevent the iron deficiency to get as bad as it gets but I never take it seriously...so I don't think it works if it's not taken regularly...I guess I don't reaaally believe in it.
I try to drink herbal teas to sleep better but I don't think it works really well. It worked ONCE for me and then the other times I took it nothing really happened. There are ones that work great for digestion though!

rhodiola; how long does it take to get an effect? does it really take weeks? I read when you know there'll be a stress situation in a few weeks you have to start taking it said few weeks earlier.

I never take anything! Should I start? Is there one for clumsiness? I'm always dubious about tablets (something inherited from my mum..) but I guess supplements are a little different. THEN AGAIN i'm also dubious about herbal rememedies. I think I need a tablet that helps with decisions!

No, for me it took maybe a day. Baring in mind I'm small framed ("underweight") so things affect me easily, maybe 3 days or so for the normal person. And Jay, that's a shame. And Romi I never care for the categorisation anymore, no one posts, it's good that we have new posts, who cares where they are.

I too take this thing to prevent iron deficiency but can't take it seriously as well! Glad to see i'm not the only one haha. I dont know why, i guess i don't believe it either...

I mean it's such a big money making industry and people think that buying supplements can make up for living unhealthy lifestyles. But obviously taking tablets isn't a substitute for good food. A lot of it I think it just designed for rich hippies. I mean I was in a health shop the other day and this lady spent like £90 on two bottles of aloe vera juice, some of this fancy superfood powder and like 2 other things... I was like ERR? Expensive. I've stopped drinking coffee and I drink this stuff which I call 'foffee' (fake-coffee haha) and to me it's a really convincing substitute. Coffee makes me feel awful, but I like the taste.

I love the taste of coffee in ice cream or biscuits or whatnot, but the drink itself disgusts me. Am I the only one?! (off topic, sorryyyy)
About the aloe vera juice: that's ridicul-aaarse! If you already have enough vitamins your body doesn't stock them it just eliminates them sooo there's no need to take more vitamins than what you already ingest...(my science teacher told us about calcium they make pregnant women take and she told us she'd noticed her urine was smelling weird so she stopped taking it because her body was just making it all go down the toilet, she didn't need any!)

^ Yes! I know, and the idea of 'detox' is bollocks because your body can flush out all the bad stuff on its own. I think if there's specific things you are deficient in you should take them. Because vitamin tablets just make your wee wee smell STRONG and look radioactive. Ha.

you can get aloe vera juice from my asda in the japanese bit. i'm not tempted at all.
i am, however, tempted to do this lemonade/maple syrup "diet" thing for a week. i suppose it's called a diet because it makes you lose weight since all you do is drink this lemonade you make yourself which contains lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper, but i want to do it for the other benefits like detoxing myself and starting again. wack?

Hm...I don't know....my mother did something where she only ate (and don't laugh...) pineapple and fish for a week (and then it was only proteins for a week and then it was other stuff I can't remember), but she went to this diet thing...and she bought a nutritionist's book. The thing is with diets is that your body gains all the weight back if you start eating like you did before all of a sudden, you have to be very progressive with going back to your "normal" eating habits.
About detox...I don't know! All I know is when I'm feeling ugh sometimes I get the urge to just drink a lot of water so I put a 1.5 L bottle of water in my room and try to drink it all in a day (I don't drink much...I do not get the 1.5L you need to drink daily...all my water comes from my food, and like 2 glasses a day).

^ this lemonade thing says to drink that for a week then start on thin soups and work your way back up to solids etc. i don't want to do it to lose weight, though. i just feel sluggish and my skin is crap and i know it's because i don't eat right so this would encourage me to think about what i'm actually ingesting, if that makes sense. i definitely need to try and drink more water. i'm addicted to soft drinks, and tea and coffee.
