Since the film club is dying a bit of a slow, extended death, I figured we'd have a go at reviewing something a bit less lengthy: songs!
I sort of thought we could pick a song in turn and the others could review it, saying if we like it. Then maybe we could buy it if you like it? It could be a way of finding new music! We could all change songs about 3-4 days, because maybe a week could be too long.
I'll start straight away so people get the gist.
I found this gal on my tv music service thing, and was quite shocked I liked it because I normally take a while to like female vocalists, or I don't like them at all. But I really like the lyrics and all the different melodies. What do you lot think?

Soz Rhi, I'm not amazingly keen on that. It seems to meld a lot of elements that are very prevalent in contemporary tunage. Namely the somewhat inorganic keyboard heavy production that for me makes it hard to pick hard to pick out melody and song structure in a big ole wash of gloss, and also makes it hard for me to tell one song from another if I turn the radio on! Lyrically it seems to follow the current heavily saturated trend for young female singer-songwriters in the mainstream; a mixture of moderately grandiose imagery mixed with personal introspection (interestingly the lyrics seem to decry that sort of self indulgence though "blame it all on your upbringing" etc in all fairness)
The voice is a bit Kate Nash and again, shares the general problems I have with this, nothing about it is really bad, but for me it shares too much in common with other stuff out at the moment to really stand out. Even the image presented in the video seems very post-Florence/Bats for Lashes/Ellie Goulding.
I like the idea of the thread, the film club's failure has a lot to do with my laziness, creating it then failing to support it.. I'm just the most awful time manager ever... ) : Sorry I've started you off so negatively Rhi! I have a very particular taste in music, harder to please than Simon Cowell in the worst mood of his life.

Rhi this in an EXCELLENT IDEA! I am excited by this. I promise to try harder than I tried with the film club because this is more suited to me, it only taking up to around six minutes to digest. My attention span leaves so much to be desired, it's really dreadful. Anyway Onto my critique...Er...disappointingly I kind of agree with Josh...however I do find positives in it too. I quite a few of the lyrics, I don't like it when people put too abstract imagery in things though. And I'm not keen on the words 'gold' or 'silver' in songs to add to things unless it's really necessary and realistic...but I do quite like the bit in the second verse about 'Narcissism's overwhelming' etc etc but I kind of feel like that particular line is brought down by the rest of the lyrics... I also find that I'm a cruel and unfair critic on stuff like this and so her voice makes me dislike the lyrics in general because it sounds like she's trying really hard to put on that voice but there's no humour in the rest of the song so it isn't like singing in a British accent naturally, kind of. I don't think that sentence made sense. Anyway, I do think she's a bit similar to a lot of other female singers that I'm not really into, and although it is true that I might hear it on the radio and not feel like throwing the radio out the window, I wouldn't really choose to listen to it extensively. I also like and don't like the video-I like it because it looks pretty, but it's quite similar to a lot of other music videos...and her facial expressions when she sings put me off a little. Which is totally unreasonable. But there you go...
Damn I am far too negative for this thread. I really really am.

Haha fair enough guys! It's not a disappointment to have different opinions.
It is ironic - the lyrics about self-indulgence - because the rest of the lyrics are quite self-indulgent, to a degree. Also, her voice is quite general. BUT there's an originality there that I can't put my finger on, a sort of homegrown originality, not the 'originality' that the music industry loves.

Rhi, I love this idea! I was going to suggest doing a film-club type thing with albums, but I guess albums may suffer from the same problem that the film club did. Individual songs will probably fare better. I actually have listened to this song a few times and I do enjoy it. It's chock full of synthy goodness. And really, I can't think of anything I like more than I like synth... Maybe kittens... or curry... or my dear sweet sister. OK, not really that last one. That was just in case my parents somehow read this. I have to agree with Josh and JJ that it might be a bit on the insubstantial side, and is very of-the-moment. I don't think I can pick up on the originality you're speaking of, Rhi, but that doesn't mean you're wrong. I just don't think I'm going to be remembering this song next week, or even tomorrow. Still it pleases the ears, and I'm going to give it another go. Shall we have a signup sort of thing, like the film club did?

ah great idea :] I liked it, in general, I'm not sure whether I would listen to it again; quite possibly not. The only aspect I found really irritating was the I'm-singspeaking-so-quick-you-can't-possibly-hear-the-lyrics (this is complete hypocrisy from someone who is an avid fan of Operator Please but oh well!) . I really enjoyed the last few "oh's", which combined quite beautifully with the stripped away music at that point. ah, so its a bit of a mixed bag for me

I've heard The Good Natured before. The mood of "Rose" interested me, but the more I played her, the more I couldn't get past her lifeless arrangements. "Your Body Is a Machine" has less of the clunk clunking samples, but it still feels so stiff and the glossy production on her voice is taking away whatever little charm I thought her vocals had before. I might like her more if her arrangements were more loose and organic, but her voice doesn't quite captivate me anyhow.

yeah, i dislike the song. it's basically la roux meets florence and the machine minus any emotion plus a whole load of commercial overproduction.

it's inoffesive, her voice is actually not as mind-blowingly annoying as her appearance would have you believe, the accent i'm not keen on. the song itself is alright. i dunno that's pretty much all i can say about it, it's alright.

I really like this idea! Unfortunately I'm going to have to echo other comments on the song: bland and unmemorable.

That was kind of pretty.. the vocal arrangments are actually pretty ethereal amid the chuggha-chuggha. Echo-chamber fun for the Wynne! Some of the genre conventions like the screamy more melodramatic voices and some of the guitar action do jar a bit with my inbuilt aesthetic prejudices, perhaps.
It sounds like it was made in the nineties which is comforting. I can't see myself playing that frequantly but it was a not unpleasent listen.

The metal song is alright, it doesn't do anything in particular for me, but I don't mind it. A little dreary, i guess.

Sorry, I'm not liking the atmospheric black metal either. Sounds like every song I've heard from this genre. No soul.

What I don't like about most metal is the droning guitar riffs, and this doesn't seem to be an exception. The vocals are pretty monotone, but I'm glad I listened all the way through to hear the souper dark growling screams-- those always tickle me.
