"The Secret Garden"
What the hell is going on with this song I may never know- but it sure made me sit up and check my CD wasn't scratched....
I do support his idea of a song being perpetually written, although very surprised after hearing the harp and violin version- what a fascinating song!
Also- I don't see how it links to 'Get Lost'..
What was everyone else's reaction when you first heard it?

My reaction? Non-plussed. It's fine, I guess. Nothing to have on repeat though.

I couldn't believe how stupid I was to confuse "The Kiss" with "The Secret Garden"! Your intuition has served you well.
That was excatly my reaction when I first heard the song and was like 'eh?', since it just didn't cohere with what had gone before and certainly not with what was to come i.e. Get Lost. Still- that beat is fantastic, as you say; Drum machine gone haywire!
Also- 'Turn the Key'? Refering to the fact that the 'Key' is no longer magic but 'turned' to a more sinister underbelly of desire and depression, hence "down, down, down". The 'Turn' of the tool of unlocking 'the heart' or 'true desires' also rmeinds me of Scott Walker- his respective opus' being 'Tilt' and '[The] Drift'. Both signifying movement away from the established perception towards the 'dark side'.
Just a few thoughts...

Oh hey. It's about time I post in this thread now that the confusion is gone!
Well my first reaction was kinda "...wha?" but then it sort of hypnotized me very quickly after. I really like this song a lot. It's kind of crazy and very creepy all at the same time. And the whole "down down down" right before it goes haywire - excellentness.
...It really is very creepy and dark, to me at least. I'd totally put it on a Halloween mix. Or I could also totally see it put to some sort of film.

If I heard one of his songs during a movie, I might die a little.
This obviously needs to happen. One day, when one of you grows up to be in the movie industry...!

initially it was one of those songs that i just skipped over because it just seemed a little too melodramatic for me. and then one day i had TMP just playing through while i was picking up my room and "secret garden" came on, and i heard that fucking booming sound kick in! now it's a mild favorite. just for that repetitive booming throughout the song

It made me think of WW2 and evacuation and blackouts and such.

I like it.
But I prefer the version on the piano with 'Black Is The Colour'.

I really like this. It starts off subtle but then puts you in the middle of this chaotic sound and then pulls back on all the sounds with just that pulse before Get Lost - it's almost like a cinematic sound piece - I think that's the artist in Patrick coming through.

(Can't believe I'm quoting myself- but here goes...)
I've changed my view on the song, it DOES cohere with the album and quite cleverly too:
The (excuse the pun) 'key' to the song is its situation between 'Augustine' and 'Get Lost', and I want everyone to look in particular at the end of 'Augustine' and the beginning of 'Get Lost'.
Augustine ends with the lyrics "As we fall back/into the/impossible/dream". I believe this is the signal for when we leave the love-struck reality and Patrick descends into the twisted, nightmare world of 'The Secret Garden'. However, like all dreams- like love- it is a brief encounter and we are awakened with the alarm sounds that open Get Lost; the alarm clock on Patricks bedside waking him from the sinister dreams of Augustine and releasing him from the 'Garden'...
So in fact, through the use of continued tracking across the three songs (un-punctuated with pauses of silence to distinguish songs) it does actually cohere very very well. I can't believe it took me this long to figure it all out!

I love this song. Oddly enough, it's one of my favorites on the album...just because it has all the white noise and shit and I like that. And it's mysterious, yeah.
I always play it for my friends. And have them turn the volume very loud. It gets he best reactions!

For some reason i really love the singing at the start before the piano starts playing and for some other reason i thought that about 1:30 it sounds like the original Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. I can just imagine Gene Wilder going along a chocolate river.... well maybe i'm just a bit strange

I know exactly what you mean- it's when Wonka leads the golden ticket winners onto his boat and they go through the tunnel and there are all the nightmare visions etc etc..

x.Sebra.xthat's a great interpretation. I think the great thing about The Seceret Garden is the way that is like a part of a book, and it may not be the most interesting part, but without it the rest of the album wouldn't really make sense. The Magic Position has to be taken in and digested as a whole I think, and when I listen to it, it's like being taken to a different world... xx
