I can contribute some not-all-that-helpful knowledge, because the only place in Germany I've been to is Berlin, but if you're looking for cheap accomodation they have (at least one) hostel(s) there which are cheap and chock full of fun people and fun times.

germany is a tricky place for vegetarians.

^ it can be. but there's things you can buy in most supermarkets like vegetarian pates, sausages, schnitzels etc which are all very yummy, organic and meat-free. also, don't forget the vöner!
i only really know the area where my family are from, which is niedersachsen, and only around hannover and braunschweig. so if you have any questions about those places, feel free to ask!

yeah, good job i'm not vegetarian then! and a rough guide of that area might be of help Jay, i don't really mind where i go as long as there's good stuff to do and isn't ridiculously priced. also is it best to just speak in English or try German? cause obviously due to doing it at university i'm quite stable with the basics of German and would feel bad about speaking in English, but then if i got stuff wrong i might look like an idiot

i'd say try speaking in german, it's just courtesy and whether you get the grammar mixed up or not doesn't matter, anyone hearing you will just be pleased that you made the effort. you could always start off explaining that you've learned some basic german but you usually speak english and if you make any mistakes they should just ignore them or help you out? haha. no one's going to call you an idiot if you've had a try at it, anyway. well.. depends what you're interested in, really. near to hannover is the bergen-belsen camp if you wanted to go have a look at that... hannover's good for shopping and so on and there's also a nice big shopping centre in braunschweig called the schloss-arkaden. umm.. might have to get back to you on this stuff cos i'm a bit rusty, it's been years since i've actually done any wandering around in germany cos we usually just stay with relatives and do the usual trips out to the supermarket and/or restaurants once or twice a week. as for pricing, there is not too much difference between the euro and the pound, sadly, so value is kind of similar to over here. lucky for you my german cousin is staying and she grew up in braunschweig so i'll ask her later and edit some stuff in here

holy bologna, jay, you're some kind of walking, talking german encyclopedia! unless you suffer from paraplegia and can't talk and can only type into a monitor, then i apologize for the insensitivity. but i bet you could still cure disorders and illnesses with that mind, however. like one of those ironic tragic predicaments. das ist leber.

when is after your exams? The ruhr area is the european capital of culture 2010 so there is a lot interesting stuff going on there this year. Ruhr area is also good because you have so many big cities close to each other. Berlin and prices: I've heard that it's rather cheap compared to other big cities like Hamburg. I had a cheap hotel. Are you looking for a hostel/hotel or a room? so, how long will you stay at all? Language: germany is not france, so you can talk every language you want. At least that's my experience.. Though you should try german just for the fun of it. I recommend to everyone listening Die Ärzte(aka bestbandever haha..) to learn it.
