Chloë! Anselm Kiefer! High five! I remember stumbling upon this gigantic piece by him in a gallery in Amsterdam, and just being enthralled by it, and everyone moving on all too quickly. Gah. Yeah, he's amazing! Only the cool kids like Kiefer ;D

Can someone explain to me what the deal is with nosebleeds in photography and why I'm meant to find them so freaking awesome? Particularly band photography.

I'm not sure about the nosebleed thing, Juno's just a bit obsessed with blood in general, I didn't wanna post anything too gorey.

How did I know you'd pop up in this thread as soon as I read Sophie's post?

My Andrew WK senses were tingling, I can smell a reference to him from 1000 e-miles away.

Sibz, your friend's photographs, which I really like, remind me of this Adbusters cover set:

Because they're kvlt and fr0stb1tten and original. Like taking a photo of you vomitting pink glitter. Elliott Erwitt is my favourite photographer. These images aren't cutting edge or glittering, they're not glamorous or conceptual masterpieces. They're quiet, they're reflections upon ourselves and they're honest. They're timeless classics, it's why I love them.

Just because somethings been done before doesn't mean anyone who does something similar is instafail. I'd rather see something that's been done before being done well, then something "new" being done badly.

Which isn't what I'm implying, Sibz. I'm saying that there are particular subcultures that photograph blood so frequently that there's no longer an impact with the vast majority of photos. It's like all of the photos of heavily lip-glossed pouts - I no longer see anything in them apart from technical elements, rather than conceptual ideas.
Of course if something has been done that doesn't make it bad; but surely I'm not the only one to have tired of seeing the same images over and over in popular modern photography? They're not bad, many of them are technically beautiful. But they are most definitely not my cup of tea. I'd really rather see an exciting new conceptual idea carried out badly that can be improved on than the same old images that look the same to me. Or I'd rather see an image that changed the world for its content (be it political or otherwise) and was shot badly than a photo of George Bush looking fly.
