As the Black Eyed Peas once said, "Where is the love?!"
And now as I say it too, except with the added words "for the Decemberists?!" at the end.
So! They are one of my most favorite bands. Their albums are fantastic. I think I especially like Picaresque and Her Majesty. The Crane Wife is beautiful but the looonngg songs can get just a bit tiresome in large doses. Castaways has great tunes too.
And the song Shiny from their EP is just raghhhdshjkdewhikue. (For lack of better words.)
I know there are fans here, so discuss your favorite albums/songs etc.! And the brilliance of Colin Meloy's songwriting of course. Or just discuss his hot nerdiness if you'd like.
And has anyone had the pleasure of seeing them live? If so please share highlights. Their show was the best I've seen so far. It was so good I felt like it almost didn't happen, because it felt almost impossible. I mean, they have a giant whale. On the stage. And they play random Soviet Union national anthems at the start of their performances. How much more awesome can people get?!

Yes! I love The Decemberists. But their albums and EPs are really expensive in my local record shops, so I only have Castaways..., Picaresque and The Crane Wife. I'm gonna get The Tain EP this weekend though.
FACT: A girl apparently name-dropped The Decemberists in Hollyoaks to look cool. But she is a character on Hollyoaks and goes right back to being an annoying twat.

I have love for The Decemberists. They are one of those bands where I don't know much about them... like, I have 'The Crane Wife', but I don't know of their other albums or when it was released or what the singles were or anything. And I tend to listen to the album as a whole, without choosing specific tracks, so I don't have any favourite tracks.
Which means, all in all, I'm probably not the best person to have a discussion about The Decemberists with. But I just wanted to justify your quoting of the Black Eyed Peas ;D I do like them.
(The Decemberists, not the BEP‘s)

I've only gotten through the whole thing once, it's not one of my favorites from them, but if you have patience, it's definately interesting and enjoyable, and a Decemberists fan should check it, yo. But I would more reccommend you try to get your hands on Her Majesty. And I say that doctorwho should SEE them. Trust me, it's very much worth it.

I love The Decemberists dearly. I have all the albums, and I love The Tain. (That bit in the middle with the circus sounding stuff! Rapture!) They have increased my tolerance for long songs considerably, because I certainly enjoy all of theirs.
I have not been able to see them live, sadly. I keep on missing them just barely due to odd circumstances. It's intolerable; all of my friends have managed it and they just tut sadly when I complain.
I really think that Colin Meloy just needs to sit down and write a rock opera. If anyone can do it and not look like a tool, it's Colin Meloy.
Slightly related: Carson Ellis is my hero, I love her art. I bet that their baby is cute and talented.

The Decemberists are one of my favorites. Lovely lovely narrative songs.
Tickets are expensive, but I would love to see them perform with an orchestra.

I really think that Colin Meloy just needs to sit down and write a rock opera. If anyone can do it and not look like a tool, it's Colin Meloy. It would be filled with soldier boys, girls in petticoats, lost lovers, joint suicides, summery islands, revenge, murder, AND A BUNCH OF BIG WORDS I'VE NEVER HEARD OF BEFORE!!! It would be hardcore to the MAX, my friend.

I AM A CHIMBLEY, A CHIMBLEY SWEEEEEP.
My friend recently introduced me to all things The Decemberists. And I adore them so much. The Chimbley Sweep is one of my favouritest songs ever.

I also insist on the presence of at least one dirigible.

Oh, I love them! Shiny is one of my favourite songs by them. I've seen them live twice, in the first one we had a dance-off and in the second one they played Mariner's Revenge Song, which included, as you stated, a giant whale, but also John Moen with a drum on his head and synchronised dancing! I've met them twice as well, they're all very sweet. I wish I could afford to see them again.

Best show that I have ever been to.
Everyone in the venue was singing "hear all the bombs fade away." It was so amazing, I can't even put it into words.
