Because when you draw from observation, you can always adjust the lighting, your angle, the arrangement, etc. If you just draw from photos, you're just drawing someone else's decisions. You're translating a flat thing to a flat thing, and ultimately will not understand objects in space. Ohhhh, I understand. You're right, drawing from observation makes it...your own thing, I guess is the way to say it?? Lol, I dunno how to say it really. I feel the same as you too though allison, I always find it hard to know where to start with drawing something, especially people/faces. I've been grabbing random things from around the house and trying to draw them...was pretty proud of myself because I didn't do too badly with a strappy high heel yesterday.

Here's one of my drawings I just had a stuffed penguin sit on the table, lol. Altogether I'm pretty happy with it 'cause it one of my first times drawing from observation, but now when I look at it I wished the colouring was a bit nicer. I've gotten better coloured pencils since then, but I haven't really had a chance to draw much else yet

Very nice! I like the beak's shadow the best.
What brand of colored pencils are you using? I love Prismacolors. I buy them one by one. Anything Prismacolor is worth buying.

Thank you so much! For that drawing I was just using some old Crayola pencils I had lying around. I recently bought a set of 48 Faber Castell ones though. I've never heard of Prismacolors before, but I just looked them up and they look lovely!

KARISMA! oh my god, karisma pencils were the greatest. i know prismas are like the exact same things, but they're not as good as karismas. i almost cried when i found out they'd stopped making them right now i'm really really really loving doing record sleeves for people. it requires a fair bit of thinking but it's so, so fun.

I did this last year as practise for painting eyes with acrylics. That's why I smudged everything else. Paintings in a sylvia ji style(http://www.sylviaji.com ) were planned but actually I made none (note to myself: PAINT you lazy oaf!!)
