You certainly have a good eye, Sibz, but I feel that drawing lacks a certain dynamism that would do it justice. My eye keeps on being drawn to his ear because that is the darkest and boldest part, so much that it's competing with the rest of his face. His eyelashes are also dark and bold, but not enough to draw my eye away from his ear. His nose and the bottom of his lower lip are so faint they disappear into the background, which gives his ear more visual weight. I mean, unless you want me to stare at an ear (albeit a beautifully rendered ear, don't get me wrong)... Also, have you found a different program than Paint? (I ask because some of the edges look anti-aliased.) I think this is because I did those parts first, and just filled them in instead of colouring them in as I normally do, lazy of me, but I was on a lot of codeine. I've been using Paint.net a bit recently, I enjoy the ability to alter the transparency, but it has resulted in a change of style, and I'm not sure if this is good or not. I kind of want to go back to the more simple look, but it's hard not to get caught up blah blah I'm a virgo.

Ah! Perfect shading galore!
I just made a digital art fig. [Deleted because I hate it.] It kinda bores me--why did I choose fruits for a concentration?

I hate my scanner, it destroys all my drawings. Oh well. This one was inspired by the song Skateaway by Dire Straits This one's just random A sort of expressive self portrait-ish thingy. Oh, how very, very sad. Ehrm. The scanner completely destroyed this. It looks so much better on paper! There's a story behind this one, but it's not important. Pretty random.

also Erik (AMIRITE? OR IS IT WITH A C?) what did you use for that? looks like mspaint? You are right! I used Illustrator. I thought it was horribly boring, so I redid it. I can't be arsed to show it at the moment, but the professor felt it improved greatly. I'll probably pull it up later.

Hi! I'm in Year 11 this year, and one of the subjects I've chosen is Visual Communication. It's mostly about drawing and designing packaging and that sort of thing. I really love art - stuff like collages, Photoshop and making jewellery in particular. I do like drawing as well, but only in a silly stick-figure way. xD Now that I'm doing this subject though, I'm sort of starting to freak out because I feel like I should be able to draw better/more realistically, and I don't think that I can. I've been practicing a little bit just by trying to draw things in front of me - that's going ok, but it never turns out as great as I wish it would. So I just wanted to ask you guys what you thought about this. Do you think that anyone can learn to draw well if that's what they want? Or do you think that it's a gift that you either have or you don't...? What sort of things do you think I could do to improve? It's probably hard to answer that last thing if you don't know what I've done... xD I'll post something that I've drawn when I have more time... Thanks guys I love all the threads with people posting art/photos, they're always amazing and inspiring

I think that some people are obviously just able to draw quite easily, but it's also certainly something you can learn. Just keep practising. Take a couple of life drawing classes or something if you're really into it, that's the best way to learn anything

Practice all the time. Draw every day. Draw everything you see. Take your time and remember you don't have to commit to a line. Rush and do gesture drawings that are uneditable. Don't be afraid to challenge yourself.
Also, never draw from photos.

Thanks very very much for your replies TiaraStripes and mimicry I'll practice heaps and heaps! I feel a lot better about the whole thing, lol. How come drawing from photos is a bad idea...?

Because when you draw from observation, you can always adjust the lighting, your angle, the arrangement, etc. If you just draw from photos, you're just drawing someone else's decisions. You're translating a flat thing to a flat thing, and ultimately will not understand objects in space.

i can only draw from other drawings. i can compose things just fine, but i can't visualize 3d objects in 2d (and i don't even attempt to draw in a realistic style). if i look at a person i don't know where to begin in drawing their face, i can sometimes attempt to sketch their visage based on a photograph, but i'm best at just like referencing an already drawn portrait of them. which is kind of sucky.
