I used to like NME, but now they don't seem to enjoy anything that anyone makes. They complain about people doing things the same, but whenever something a bit 'eccentric' comes along - like The Bachelor - they slam it. That review was not only condescending to the record and the artist, but also to the fans, who are apparently all just sycophantic airheads who can't offer any inspiration to anyone. Thanks for that, Alex Miller.
Bring on the revolution, so we can get better writers in the NME offices!

There are so many things I'd like to say about that, but all I will say is; telling people to only download specific tracks is ruining the whole point of an album.

Hah! This review just highlights everything I don't get about NME - that ketamine comment and the random stab at his fans really came out of nowhere...

A bit rude, not exactly evaluating the album in some places. Still, each to their own. Even if their own is a pile of crap..

the random stab at his fans really came out of nowhere... I'm so sick of hearing journalists say things about "obsessive" fans. Not only about Patrick Wolf, but other artists as well... I'm sure the writers at one point in their lives (or currently) were big fans of an artist. I supported the album not because I'm an obsessed fan, but because I wanted to hear it and was sure it was going to be something I'd be proud to sponsor. Which it is. I think this review is pretty overthought. Edit: Don't take this post the wrong way; I don't take reviews seriously most of the time, just I've read quite a few articles lately referring to fans in a patronizing way and I think it's silly.

Woah, people - calm down >_>
I think if you just step back for a minute, this review is fine - if missing the point of what a review is. It is drenched with cynicism but I found it Charlie-Brooker-angry rather than OMG I HATE THIS GUY.

Hmmm didn't mean to sound angry there. It just seemed that only 1 paragraph was actually reviewing the album. I guess I just let my frustrations with NME hold sway too much sometimes..

Hear, Hear. The NME would rather hype the scores of 'We're-so-indie-with-our-long-hair-and-skinny-jeans' bands rather than celebrate completely different music.
I gave up buying it properly about a year ago; nowaday's its just good for laugh.

Gaahhh, I'm hating all these knee-jerk reactions to negative reviews. Some people won't like the album - it's as simple as that..

these aren't exactly new opinions, either.
with the previous albums, patrick got some bad reviews. there was a mini fan uproar then, too. shit happens.

How is 7/10 a BAD review?

i kind of meant to put this in the other thread where people were flaily. but it works here too. i didn't find the fact it was 7/10 a bad review, just the weird descriptions were a bit... :S?
like, are they saying he is on ketamine and likes doughnuts? or that his eyes could tranquillise animals and bake dough at the same time?
