oh man! If it is!!! I'll have to adjust my vacation! ...good thing I haven't booked anything yet! edit: actually, does anyone think it would be worth it? Probably would take a whole day, be expensive, and Patrick would probably only play for like 1/2 hour or something. Meh, maybe I'll just go shopping. This isn't to say I wouldn't enjoy a Patrick show - but not in this context. I think it's free to go to this so you can just go to see him although i think there will be other good acts too.

Then, possibly. . . possibly. That was going to be the day I was likely going to be heading home, but it can always be pushed back one day since we have not booked anything yet haha

get the tube to mile end and walk down, takes about 10 minutes. you won't miss it, it's at the bottom of the hill. plus as a festival is on, there'll be signs outside the tube station.

That was fast! Thanks Jay It's strange there are no tube directions on the festival website, unless I am blind. edit: Thanks Naomi

click hereyou can go to mile end tube station or bethnal green although i find it's easier to get to the side of victoria park you probably want if you go from mile end station because you just go along grove road and the entrance you come to is usually where the entrance for festival-y events are there...well in my experiance anyway. there'll be a lot of people taking the same route so just follow them edit: sorry, that's basically what jay said

I do somewhat agree there, Josh. Is this raising money for racism? How exactly would that be used if it is? I dunno...I just don't see how a gig can help the perceived continuing problem with racism... But in the end, even if there are much better reasons to hold a fundraiser, it's still a gig. I'd imagine most people in the audience at any fundraiser gig are only there to see the bands play. Actually, to clear any confusion up it's a free carnival. LMHR is a non-profit organization and any money raised is spent on events like this and various other free gigs throught the year i.e. the ones in trafaglar square, to raise awareness not money. There's hardly a surplus of funds, if any of you are misled to believe so. The original Rock Against Racism gigs back in the seventies had some validity as a statement of positive intent in a economically crumbling Britain, that like all struggling nations was in some quarters starting to blame and lash out at minorities with the rise of the National Front and so forth. The original Rock Against Racism was also very much driven by the punk groups and artists of the time as a cultural reaction to both the far-right creeping into punk and mainstream artists like Eric Clapton starting to make rather off colour racial comments (ironic really considering his made his career out of leeching off black music..)... To 'Lemon Bloody Cola', you're entitled to your own opinion, of course, but firstly it's not a 'political excuse'. The carnival is celebrating the fact that 30 years since the success of the RAR carnival in 1978, Britain has been able to exist as a diverse society despite the existance of racists such as those in the BNP. If you think that's just an 'excuse' then fair enough...but the BNP has made modest gains in recent elections and although they're not all threatening in the broader scale of things, the carnival is there to signify something that we often take for granted, i.e. the fact that the majority of Brits enjoy the diverse nation that we live in and the best example of this is through the diversity of the music scene which most are passionate about. Secondly, LMHR is not an organization that's leeching off the whole the RAR era, it's just the fact that now it's not just punk artists standing against racism, it's a whole range of musical genres; indie, rock, bhangra, punk, dance, grime etc. Hence the need for an organization with a broader name. Red Saunders who set up the RAR campaign still works with LMHR and often speaks at their annual conferences etc and continues to support all that LMHR does. Thirdly, obviously the problems experienced in the 1970's are different to those experienced today. Evidently the threat of fascist organizations such as the National Front was more prominent in the 1970's due to the economic downturn at the time, which consequently made people more vulnerable to far right ideology, hence provoking a just response from anti-fascist organizations...and no-one's saying that the state at that time is the same today. But in 7 years the BNP bote has grown 97 fold from over 3,000 votes in 2000 to over 292,000 in 2007. And though we know that hopefully they'll never enjoy mainstream success that's something that LMHR feels we need to be able to identify with. Although there are loads of bands/artists attending that will attract huge amounts of fans, they're all doing this for free, and if a fan felt so strongly aganist the views of LMHR, as perhaps you do, i'm sure they wouldn't turn up and support the cause. The fact that a crowd of at least 50,000 is expected, however, will hopefully deny any glimmer of hope that any fascist organization hopes to make in the local elections on May 1st. As i said, it's a matter of opinion, but i'm sure most would agree that that's not a bad thing.

Yes it's an updated list, although there are still some more additions to the line-up yet to be announced. Also, shambles are playing...it just can't be announced on the official LMHR website, for certain reasons, for the time being.
