Hey all. This has been on my mind for a while, and I was wondering if it were just me. Undoubtedly all of us have got the song, Accident & Emergency and love it. On reflection though, is the quality of the recording all that good?
For example, the small snippet on his Myspace page (www.myspace.com/officialpatrickwolf) and website, seems to be of much clearer quality. As well as any radio stations that have played the track. I'm pretty sure there's a difference. His voice is more electronic, and the notes seem wetter.
Why is this? Is he saving the "proper" version for February? Or am I just imagining things?

maybe he just made the so called 'clearer' version and didnt want it like that so mucked it up a bit...

Hmm, I dunno. It certainly sounds a lot better. It's as if the released version has been muffled or dampened.

I did woner this myself- thanks for bringing it up.
Notice how the 'phaser'- for all us musical geeks and Audacity freaks will know- At the beginning, with the 'recorded naughty italian children' moves across the headphones- but yes doesn't in the commerical CD release..?
Or maybe its just me....

I cant hear ANY phaser on AnE. Think you might mean panning

Well, you DO hear the difference between the sample and the release? The sample is much better in my opinion.

glad u said that. when i bought the single i tohught the quality was not as good as the snippet i used to listen to on the website, that one had much more energy and was so clear. i also thought the cd was slower as well

I heard the difference when I finally got the CD single. First I thought it might've been my sound card or the like, but it wasn't. I found that the version used for the sample was featured on an NME compilation (The Essential Bands 2006). I don't know which I prefer. The beginning sounds much better than on the CD single, though, and the panning was more interesting (I liked it more). But methinks the bit of 'mucking up' works pretty well other than that. In the other version the music seems busier and distracts too much from his voice for the most part.
Don't know if you have it, but I'm not sure sharing the alternate version would be okay here... *shrug*

Sadly, I don't. Hopefully it'll be in The Magic Position. Probably not though.
EDIT: My friends, I have found the different version from the NME album. And I must say, it is exquisite. This must have been a mistake on Mr Wolf's part. The difference is vast, and a huge improvement. There must have been a mistake here. Either that, or he's saving it for February.

Thanks so much for figuring it out, I just downloaded that and it's much MUCH better! I have the A&E single on mp3 and I haven't noticed the quality of the sound being worse, the production is just more dull and watered down on the single edit. I hope the NME version goes on the album because it's so dense and interesting and all the weird, different sounds are overlapping and it's far more catchy and appealing. It's amazing how subtle changes in the mix have a really dramatic effect on the entire mix.

I guess we were given the video version of A&E to coincide with, well, the video. I'd say it'll go on the album. Much, much <3 to Thornykins!

If I'm not mistaken, the "good" version is the one that's on the promo version of the single as well (radio mix), so for those of you who can't get the nme album, the promo's still available on eBay for like £2.
