the fabchannel version btw, is basically the way he played it live on most of the WITW tour. sometimes he played only piano - and THAT version was very pretty! I really love hearing "Teignmouth" with just piano. (the live drumming could've been a LOT better, yes.) I think in the studio version the electronic elements overpower the piano a bit much in some parts. (And the chords are lovely.) I lovelovelove 'Overture'! To tell you the truth, I didn't like it as much the first time I heard it, and I was hoping the studio version would be better. The vocals could've been more delicate in some parts. but it was live. And now I think it's simply beautiful. I always feel odd replying to threads late.

i didnt like it. i only heard the acoustic version on XFM and was dissapointed. if the album has beats in it, it might sway my vote. My favorite song on WITW for a long while was Teignmouth but i when i saw the live version with the drums on fabchannel, i held my head and said "why? why does it sound so bland suddenly???". i think patrick is stronger with his studio arrangements most of the time then his live ones. wow really?? hmm see how different people can think, cause I absolutely love the live versions of that song (or any song really) and I love love overture, it's extremely beautiful and it gives me a little bit of a witw feeling, which I defintely will miss!

I just love Patrick live!!! His most fantastic instrument is his voice. The emotions he gets over are contagious. ...but his other skills are not to be dismissed! totally agree with you. the first time I saw him live, I was stunned, cause I expected him with a laptop. but there he was, playing the piano, violin and ukulele, and his voice alone sounds like an orchestra filling the room!

Ok, I don't have anything of substance to say but OMG I LOVE THIS SONG. Seriously, kills me every time. I put my earphones in and walk to class with this on repeat, I have a huge smile on my face and am mouthing the lyrics and it's all I can do to not start skipping or dancing or bursting into song. I'm sure people think I am crAAAAAAAAzy, but what do I care if they are giving me a wide berth in the streets? :D Poor fools, they have probably never heard of Patrick or sunshine or first love.
:P

You can't have duplicate names for Myspace Music accounts, so 'Patrick Wolf' couldn't have been possible. I'm sure 'P. Wolf' (or similar) would have been viable, but then I think the spoonerism is rather amusing myself. Besides, now I can use Overture for my music, so I'm not gonna complain.

you can have duplicate names, but when they're searchable they usually get deleted.

I seems like the general vibe from people here is that The Magic Position is that its going to a poppy album and Accident and Emergency certainly suggests this.
But a lot of the other tracks I've heard off the album like Overture and Bluebells sound more subtle and more "mature" then anything Patrick has done before.

But a lot of the other tracks I've heard off the album like Overture and Bluebells sound more subtle and more "mature" then anything Patrick has done before. It's a bit of both really. I mean, I haven't heard the album, but bluebells, augustine and magpie are quite subtle and less obviously 'pop' songs. Not sure how the recorded version of overture will be - could be really poppy! get lost is poptastic, and 'stars' is pop but in a kind of leftfield way. And 'the magic position' itself is like the ultimate pop song! Maybe the language used isn't too helpful - 'pop' is interpreted so differently by different people. x

I think a lot of people confuse 'pop' with 'upbeat songs', but some of the best pop songs are sad and melancholic; I've been having an affair with ABBA's 'The Winner Takes It All' for a while now...
(On another tangent, I don't hold with this 'pop' as 'popular' rant, either; look to Robyn and see how to make one of the best pop albums of all time, and how many people outside of the PopJustice messageboard have actually heard her best work?)
No. For me, pop means clean and honest, accessable and euphoric, and making something huge and epic, often with very little in the way of instrumentation. And to that end, The Magic Position ticks all the boxes.
To me, the album is a bit of a greatest hits, because there are definately songs on there that are evocative of the Wind in the Wires sound, just as there are songs on there which are like a more mature Lycanthropy, but it definately has it's own sound, and lyrically he's on form this round.
Cheerio, Michael. xxx
