Unlike many people of my age, i have never actually watched a proper scary film. Although, i don't think i mind gory things, just psycological horror.
Anyway, that Doctor Who with the angels was scary enough for me, thank you very much.

I've never really been interested in seeing this movie, and from what most of you have been saying, I'm glad I haven't.
I really liked Silent Hill though, as far as horror movies go.

i don't bother with american horror films any more, they've lost all imagination, its just disembowel this decapitate that, makes me yawn. Its all about asian horror films, there creepy, specially the japanese ones, the country closed its borders for two hundred years for god sake, no wonder they come up with such ideas, tis brilliant. Still have no idea wtf Audition was actually about, but it scared the fuck out of me Yes, and the lack of imagination in most American horror films now comes complete cycle due to the ridiculously large amount of Asian horror films being remad. This site is a good reference point for Asian horror...I think I've posted it before on this board, but it's always a decent read. Oldboy is a current favourite of mine...it's not really a horror, but it's so beautifully made (the fight scene in a corridor is like the rolling screen beat-em-up games of the 90s, like Streets Of Rage. I want to play that now) and fantastically acted. I fully expect a remake, only with a less 'controversial' ending. Battle Royale is getting an American remake next year. I'd like to see how they transfer the Japanese social commentary to an American one. Or if they'll just see it as an excuse to blow up lots of pretty young Americans who can't act for shit.

Battle Royale is getting an American remake next year. Jesus fucking christ. Goddammit America. I haven't even seen the original and I know that's going to be a complete and utter disaster.

It just won't apply, the original is a comment on the overcrowding in Japan and the over-exuberance of violence in the media. If they can alter the metaphors in the remake and make them apply to, say, American gun culture - put their own spin on it - it might work. However, I doubt very much they will be clever enough to do this. Besides all that, there is NO NEED WHATSOEVER for a sodding remake.
The original is a really clever balance of style and substance. The character development is wonderful for a 2 hour film with around 40 students subjected to the Battle Royale itself.
I bought the novel it's based on yesterday. Not bad so far.

I'd like to see how they transfer the Japanese social commentary to an American one. Probably as badly as the Kairo remake. I've never really been interested in seeing this movie, and from what most of you have been saying, I'm glad I haven't. I really liked Silent Hill though, as far as horror movies go. Ooooh yeah, Silent Hill is good, it had a brilliant atmosphere to it, and the sets were awesome. I want to watch it again now... and LOL at that Saw 4 parody! There's just something about a grown man riding a tiny bicycle that cracks me up.

Probably as badly as the Kairo remake. Oh wow that was terrible. Kairo is such a wonderful, and rather sad film. Pulse was just...bleurgh.

I was in love with the first movie for a while...I think it was the concept moreso than the actual execution, etc. but now I'm just annoyed by it. I'll probably still see the movie though. =/
Also, thanks for posting that link, Sarah! I really like Asian horror but I generally don't know where to start.

Ooh, you must start with the usual suspects - Ringu and Ju-On: The Grudge. And definitely give The Eye and Dark Water a go. Coincidentally, all of these films have American remakes (I believe the remake of The Eye is currently in production, starring Jessica fucking Alba. Cry!).

It's the suggested - the psychological horror - that I find more chilling, and will stay with me long after I see someone cutting open a man's stomach to find a key. Oh, me too. "Gross" is totally not the same thing as "scary", and because of this a lot of recent "horror" movies totally suck. Also, I like that in psychological horror, it's like nothing major is really happening, but you're still scared shitless. Hitchcock once said that "There is no terror in a bang, only in the anticipation of it." Which is, like, tru factzz, yo. I think this is why The Shining is, in my opinion, the best horror movie I've seen so far. Scared the HELL out of me. And alls it is is just... weird visions occuring in a hotel. Even in the end, the climax seems to occur with an agonizing slowness. Also... never watch Pet Semetary. It will creep you out beyond belief. Oh, and on the topic of Asian horror films being re-made - well I've never actually seen an original Asian horror film, but Grudge was a re-make of one, am I correct? (EDIT: yes I am correct, thanks Sarah) Well anyway, the American version of that was honestly one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

And the sequel was even worse. The proper original was a TV movie, which was then remade for a cinema release...I think I've mentioned that already, I'm not sure, my mind is too clouded with rage. The Shining is definitely one of my favourite horror films. The ending sequence is like a proper nightmare, the shot of the man in a bear suit giving an old man a blowjob...zuh? My other favourites are probably The Exorcist and Ringu. Sod all happens in Ringu for 80% of the film, but like that quote Christina posted from Hitchcock, it's the anticipation and foreboding atmosphere building up that makes you genuinely nervous throughout that something terrible will happen. The end is such a supremely ace pay-off it makes me want to punch the air and shout YEEAAAHHH! The remake, although it wasn't bad, had to have the colour drained, lots of rain, spring-loaded cats leaping out of closets, monotonous children who call their mothers by their first names - all to hit us over the head with a hammer that THIS FILM IS SCARY. BE SCARED!!
