Right. It's struck me how skint I'm going to be at uni so I've decided to try and wangle myself a CostCo membership (they've got practically everything at their warehouses and it's at wholesale price). Unfortunately this seems to involve being a business and having a VAT number but I know there is a way around it. I just don't know what it is yet.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm currently looking about getting a membership abroad and transferring it but it's still quite a hassle...

Do you know anyone who is already a member who could either take you round the store as a guest or who could add you onto their membership? I'd offer to help with the latter but it's my parent's card so daren't add anyone else on.
Which store is going to be your nearest?
You'll still need shitloads of cash to shop there - it's cheap but the bulk buying means the cash outlay can be quite terrifying.

Student loan can handle that. And bringing friends along. I have a few people. But it's parents of friends and I dare not ask. Thanks for the hints though...

Bringing friends along = starving students scoffing all the free samples as they walk round, yeah?
I shop at the Bristol store, I can always take one other in with me if you get stuck and you're local to it.
The employees of the company I work for are all offered Costco membership without any of the usual bollocks. Is it worth finding out from Costco which companies they do this to and trying to get a part time job with one of them? Bit extreme, I know.

Hahaha. Well... membership lasts a year, right. So I'd in theory all I'd need is to get my card then "disappear" with the membership card. Who do you work for?
I'm in London, though. So no Bristol

Whitbread.
So there's a whole load of bar/restaurants you could work for.
Wouldn't you have to go out of town for your nearest Costco though? Where are they? Watford and Croydon?

Yeah. I don't plan on it being a weekly thing. Maybe a couple of times. A lot of hassle, maybe. But I'm well set on the idea now...

I do see the attraction of big Costco shops.
When Gloucestershire had no water recently I nipped into the big store and filled the boot of the car with bottled water for all the old dears around here. I had visions of being in a pile up on the way home and getting soaking wet.
The giant pizzas are an absolute bargain - if you can fit them in your oven.

oh costco's the devil man. never go in there without a rational person with you or you could end up buying two dozen jars of paprika and have to eat orange food for a year or ten pounds of capers which are the nastiest circular things in this world aside from caviar (which, fortunately, even at costco are too expencive for my mother to be tempted by).

one thing about costco and other stores like that, you must check to make sure what you are getting is actually a bargain. for example, if a 20 razors are $24 make sure that 1 razor isnt $1 somewhere else. ALWAYS DO THIS. they try to scam you. my mom has a membership to bj's a costco bulk store place.

I think Costco is generally Wholesale prices. So unless places sell things at a loss then I think I should be okay... presuming I get in...

So unless places sell things at a loss then I think I should be okay... presuming I get in... always make sure though. check dollar stores, etc. for those type things. BJ's is generally wholesale too. but not always. and a lot of it is bad quality things. for example, never buy a microwave there. it will catch on fire.

I may well be skint but I don't think I'd trust a dollar store. Where razors is synonymous with AIDS-BLADEZ

Sounds goood. As long as they're not in New Cross as that place is foul. Apart from the greasy spoon there. Awesome...
