I suck so I can't really explain it in text. What I suggest you do is download the video tutorials, which I hear are an easy way to get up to an alright standard. Heard good things from friends. Here is a torrent of the DVD with the tutorials on it.

Argh!
I hate MIDI. I know a guy who does 'music' and all he does is put different MIDI voices on his keyboard with generic drum samples and sometimes some guitar that's so cheesy and bad it might as well be just another MIDI part and it's soulless and it makes me want to die inside.

I suppose most of you people aren't afraid to use *coughs* pirated software. Anyway, I've been playing with Ableton Live, and finding it addictive and much more fun to play with (compared to Cubase)... It's got great support for VSTi's and audio recording with real-time effects if your computer's up to it. Just a recommendation... /t

Reason is a nice bundle of electronic brilliance, unfortunately I can't use it to record audio (I don't know if it's just my version of the software) so it's not for me. I've tried it and enjoy it a lot, great sounds, all the effects and instruments you could ask for (you can even flip the rack over and do some serious wire-patching)... Just not for audio-recording musicians I'd say.
If anyone's got any recommendations on sites with interesting drum-samples, please, tell me all about it...
/t

Reason works best when you use a ReWire compatible program (e.g. Cubase, Logic or ProTools) and just use Reason as a tool/instrument within the main program rather than for making music on its own. Likewise I prefer Ableton, when not used in a live situation, as the "client" program rather than the main host. Explanations here: here and here.

i've used every music app there is and i still use FL.
it's just so damn easy, especially when you dont have a midi controller.
i make up for it with my mad piano roll skillz.
