Is it me or does that seem quite quick? There's only been one in Brighton for about a year.
I can't say I'm really upset though because I know they've put quite a few independant record stores out of business.

I've never heard of that place before...
For people in the UK, try HMV.co.uk, free shipping and reasonably priced.
For everyone...AMAZON MARKETPLACE! They sell brand new shizzle fo nout!

There were two in Bath, and I had planned to get a job there next term. Plus I'd never had a chance to see what the fopp bar was like. The other record shops in Bath are shit. It's pretty much hmv or nothing.

Do people reckon this is the internet causing all these closures or are people just buying less music, something else.. etc?
Fuck supermarkets thats what I say. Theres a sign outside a local second hand record shop saying "We know more about groceries than Tescos ever will about music" Fight the power! Ermm.. but the second hand store closed and its owners opened another shop in Huddersfield but there you go..

Too mad gutted about this. Fopp was love. I saw a copy of A Hole in my Heart for a tenner in there once, but they IDed me. Now I will be forced to buy it at HMV for twice the price, gahhhhh.
I can only hope Avalanche Records survives this mass downfall of the cool shops. Fucking supermarkets. They practically never sell good music anyway. RARRR!
(I am a terrible Socialist.)

Do people reckon this is the internet causing all these closures or are people just buying less music, something else.. etc? I think music buyers really fall into two categories nowadays (warning - sweeping statemants ahead). There's the people who don't really care about where they get their music from, so they download etc and are less likely to go to shops to look for something specific, and if they do it'll be the big chain stores like HMV. Then there are the "purists" who only buy CDs or vinyls from selectively independant shops. These people are more likely to be really really serious about the music they listen to and therefore naturally are more likely to be snobs. I'm afraid Fopp doesn't really appeal to either of these groups and that's probably why it's been closed.

Sorry, I didn't mean everyone who buys vinyl is automatically a snob.

I can only hope Avalanche Records survives this mass downfall of the cool shops. Fucking supermarkets. They practically never sell good music anyway. RARRR! (I am a terrible Socialist.) Arr, Avalanche came pretty close to closing when they came under new management earlier this year. Did you see it? They onlt had one stack of stock left and they begged every customer to bring in unwanted stuff. They were fine in the end though. Anyway, I've known this was happening all week, but I was in complete denial. Fopp was one of the best record shops in Glasgow, and they provided great books cheap, too; I was really hoping they would stay open until next week so I could go in and buy everything I wanted, but I was unfortunately too late. I wish I hadn't went and spent all my money on new clothes last week now! Fopp was such an amazing shop. You could find out about all those bands you're 'supposed' to love for only a fiver and buy American Psycho for £3. they stocked loads of stuff that HMV or Virgin didn't have because unlike them they had staff who were gernuinely interested in music (at least my local one did) and would order in stuff that they thought people would enjoy. Hell, I did a weeks worth of work experience there, and they let me order in loads of albums on the off-chance someone might want them (I did, when they finally came in I was the one who bought them all, hah). I feel so sorry for all the staff, it must suck to have this sprung upon you and then not even get paid. Sorry for the ramble, but Fopp has been part of my saturday ritual for years now and I loved the place. It also reminds me that record shops will soon be but a distant memory ps. I'm an admittedly snobby purist, and I think Fopp was great. they were a but shite for vinyl, but on the whole, they couldn't be beaten for price.

Fopp bought out Music Zone and their debts with it. They thought they could get round the latter and the fact that MZ hadn't paid for a lot of the stock they'd inherited by starting a new company, but the distributors and wholesalers saw through that and put them on stop last week. Hence no new releases or re-stocking. They'd already jacked in books and DVDs - they expanded too quickly into a dying market (record shops are dying - even the big ones like HMV have to have constant sales etc).

I know nothing about business, but that seriously sounds a highly retarded business move.
I think its only a matter of time before either HMV or Virgin die. It's a shame, I think they will always be a sizeable percentage of people who want to buy physical releases.

HMV's sinking too. It has half the revenue it had last year apparently.
I think we should make this topic a little more universal:
PEOPLE OF THE WORLD, WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE FOR RECORD SHOPS?

I think we should make this topic a little more universal: PEOPLE OF THE WORLD, WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE FOR RECORD SHOPS? Sadly.. THE FUTURE IS DEATH.. It looks like us music fans are going to be forced into an arranged marriage with bloody digital music consumption, like it or not. I dread a future where Supermarkets are the only music stores left standing, but it's not inconceivable by any means.

There's no way Virgin will die - it has all of Richard Branson aka joint-ruler of the world (with Bill Gates) behind it.
And I think HMV makes just as much money through DVDs as music, so I can't see that dying either. Unless bit torrent and the like manage to have as much effect on the movie industry as limewire and stuff has done to the music industry, which to be honest is rather unlikely.
