One person is only half in favor of reinstating capital punishment?!
Terrible story. I am so disappointed in humaity right now.

"after asking a test sample of 10 people 75.3% of British adults are in favour in reinstating capital punishment" where did you get that statistic from? I think Laura may have possibly been taking the pee-eye-double-ess.

"after asking a test sample of 10 people 75.3% of British adults are in favour in reinstating capital punishment" Quite. Right-wing, old-fashioned papers like the Daily Mail or the Express are usually the ones who carry out these 'surveys', asking if people want capital punishment brought back. They are not representative because they're polling their readers, i.e. right-wing and old-fashioned. And only a couple of hundred (or whatever) are polled, i.e. 0.x% of the total number of adults in this country. People who take part in these 'surveys' usually also vote for the banning of the niqab, and then react in moral outrage when a school or workplace does not allow someone to wear a crucifix. I.e. idiots. Sad but true. The results might not be representative of the opinions of the entire country, but they're hardly a minority.

This is totally dumb, but the first thing that crossed my mind was "Why do they still wear those silly wigs?"
Anyway, yes he should get a longer sentence for what he did, but at least he got a sentence. Many pedophiles never get reported by the children being raped and molested because they are too afraid.
Also, I am assuming that was an exaggeration about the being strangled with their own intestines thing. That's hardly even an equal punishment, though I don't believe in the whole eye for an eye anyway, much less the least bit humane. It's perfectly normal to be very angry and disgusted, but pedophiles need help, not to be murdered.

True, but this guy is a pretty well established judge and general statesman (from what i can tell) and the fact that he can get away with giving such pitiful sentences is appaling. 7 months and money to buy the victim a bike to 'cheer her up'? It's disgraceful and should not be dismissed because the guy at least got a sentence. The guy will have known. Even if she looked older, ten year old bodies (even if they have began puberty) will never look the same as a sixteen year olds. He did the deed twice. He just thought he could get away with it. ps. I got those stats from yr mum. lolmfaroflzzzzzz.

Seems to me judges nowadays are afraid of actually giving lengthy sentences, for fear they are branded "inhumane". This is surely the main reason people are so pro-death penalty in Britain now, because there really is no escape or early release from that.

He just thought he could get away with it. That's not always true either though. I went through puberty and started menstruating by 10 years old. I was already almost full height, and a B cup chest. I grew more, but everyone thought I was 14-16 years old. Either way, he raped a child, and I agree that the sentence is not sufficient. I don't even think that sentence is sufficient for raping an adult.

This is surely the main reason people are so pro-death penalty in Britain now, because there really is no escape or early release from that. I really believe that prison is inhumane though - there's no evidence to suggest it reduces crime, hence chronic reoffenders. I just don't know what you can do. True some prisons don't treat the prisoners very well, but there are some people who really deserve all they get and in this case more. I'm sorry if I sound brutal, but that's what I believe. And it's probably from fear of being called out as brutal that judges tend to be on the soft side nowadays. I think the whole prison system is fucked up though - there are people who go to jail and stay there for smallish crimes, like shoplifting or using drugs (like, really, who gives a shit if you want to screw up your own body), but then when it comes to stuff like this, the law seems willing to be more undeservedly lenient.
