To anyone who went, wasn't it fantastic?
He did marvellously to make such an impact in an odd venue. The sit-down set-up wasn't really made for an intense gig experience, but he completely blew me away?
(By the way, what on earth was that second support act about? That adaptor of his needed a new fuse and he needed a sense of bloody humour.)
Wind In The Wires was astonishing - I knew he could cut it live with just him and the ukelele but wasn't quite prepared for this. His vocal performances were so expressive, almost more so than they were on record.
Personal highlight: the segue from Shadowsea into Pigeon Song, both picked on the viola, and - as always - This Weather. Shame he didn't play The Libertine.

It was, indeed, a fucking fantastic show. I'm still coming down now. I don't know what impressed me more - the way he handled and varied his instrumentation so deftly or that beautiful, soaring voice. There's a quality there that you can't here on record.
What's more, he was thoroughly pleasant when he chatted to people afterwards, too. Despite me nearly drooling on him. Yeah, it's a shame he didn't play The Libertine - it was on the setlist (along with two encores including Pumpkin Soup) - but he obviously didn't want to play any more. Probably down to the monitor problems he was having all night. A shame but hey, who gives a fuck, it was great.
And yeah, that second guy - he always pulls that shit. Mr Johnson was fantastic though!

But hey, we got the libertine in his encore along with wolf song.
isnt he fantastic live?? one of very few performers who can actually sing live. but out of whta i've seen.... he is probably the best at singing live.

Must say I was impressed by how good his voice was live too. It's not the main thing that sticks out when you listen to the albums, but it really came through on stage. It's like you can hear every single vibration down to the very last, it's got so much depth. In fact, the only thing that didn't surpass my expectations live was The Libertine. Sounded a bit flat in comparison, "without a gypsy band behind me" (as I think he put it at York).

I think we presume that most "singers" these days can only sing due to the wizardry that is practised in dark, smoky studios. He's got a great ear and a fantastically expressive singing style (it reminds me of PJ Harvey) - and that produces real, demonstrable, beautiful magic. And hasn’t he got big calves? (anyone at the Manchester gig will know what I mean). c x
