I actually kind of liked Battle from the beggining, the way it fits into the narrative of the album is very effective. The only track that sounded off to me from the beggining was Damaris, but I've learned to accept it more with time. Even before I heard it I knew there would be some aspects of it that woudn't agree with me right off the bat, just as with every one of his other albums. As you listen more, you learn to discern their real significance, both individually and within the context of the album. "show me some revolution!"

I also liked Battle from the begin. Nice to hear that I'm not the only one

Thickets...thickets...thickets okay; all the songs are absolutely gorgeous but thickets, count of casualty, and damaris are definately my favourite. I don't really think there are any that I dislike. I can't wait until I don't have to listen to it on a computer....limited edition...please come today!

My favourites are the Bachelor, Thickets, Count of Casualty, Vulture, Blackdown, TSIOO, Battle, and The Messenger.
Or is that too many? :\ Ok, ok, I guess if I had to pick two favourites, it'd be COC and TSIOO.

I was a bit sceptical at first when I read that there was going to be a narrator on some of the tracks but after listening to the album properly I think it works really, really well

Narrator? It's just a bit of spoken word, not a narration.
For some kick ass album-story telling check out Razia's Shadow by Forgive Durden.

I'm at uni and my copy of the album got delivered to home so I havn't got it yet, but I saw that all the songs have been put on spotify so I decided to listen to the album for the first time.
So far I've got to Thickets and it actually made me cry. (I don't usually get an emotional reaction this strong to a song or piece of music). I'm listening to it for the second time and tears are streaming down my face! I'm glad nobody is here to see me.
edit: Just listened to The Sun is Often Out and Theseus and now I'm a total emotional mess! I really truly love this album, I think it will grow to be my favourite of the four.

Theseus does that to me every time, so you're not alone there!

ok I havent got time to read the whole thread, but after a few proper listens of the cd on speakers.... it is worth getting the real copy and listen to it on real speakers. it does come alive. for me it feels like songs from a musical. but a very very good musical that is a bit dark. it feels like the songs are complementing a novel / story that you can make up in your mind for the album. the songs actually flow well for me from one to another in that concept.
i hope it made some sense what i just wrote

Hmm... Probably one of the few who thinks this but I don't like it as much as his previous albums. I like Vulture and Thickets is great, though I prefer some of the live versions I've heard. I also like Hard times esp the violin, but other than that nothing really calls to me. I don't really like Tilda Swintons part in the songs either; but hey, can't please everyone and it may grow on me later.

1) Hard Times - I smiled when I heard this song for the first time 2) Oblivion- simply amazing 3) The Bachelor- I really liked this one, it reminds me of something I'd hear down the road at a music festival. 4) Damaris- ummm, hmm.... it could of been better. 5) Thickets - When I heard this song played live on the Nan Goldin youtube video, i was spellbound. Yet, when I'm listening to it over and over on the album, I'm not so amazed with it. 6) Count of Casualty- I remember Patrick put a sample of this song on Myspace, it was originally called "war games". I really enjoy this one actually. And i'm suprised at how far this song has evolved from just that 8-bit theme. 7) Who Will - I like this one 8) Vulture - When I listened to this song for the first time, I was so upset that it was written by Patrick because it sounded nothing like him. So I wrote him a letter, and I never received nothing back. hahaha. But now I really, really like it... especially that "1 day with the devil" part. 9) Blackdown - Oh soo good. 10) The Sun is Often Out - How could anybody not like this song? It's phenomenal. 11) Theseus - Wow... just wow. Although, sometimes I really have to ask why Patrick used the word "hungry" so often. 12) Battle - YES. 13) Messenger - it's well written. I could listen to this when I'm driving at night, it's a car song.

Hey, i’m an german Wolf fan and a new member in your wonderful board here (so many informations about our wolf, yeah). Like so many others, i’m fascinated by the bachelor, maybe his best album so far (at least my favourite album of this great pop year 2009). Fave tracks are probably the ballads like the suicidal the sun is often out or the heartbreaking damaris, but I admire also vulture or hard times. I love the new sounds on the album, the military drums and the gorgeous church organ.
By the way, in Germany the bachelor got good reviews, my favourite critic of the german edition of Rolling Stone gave 4,5 stars and the bachelor made it to #1 in the critics charts.

i am in love with the new album even though it seems patrick was going through a lot when he wrote/recorded it. anyway, damaris is my absolute favourite. closely followed by the bachelor. i cant really have a least favourite. i like them all.

I used to listen to lots of live things after Wind in the Wires and when I heard Magic Position I was just insanely disappointed and angry.
I never listened to any of the post-MP stuff live or anything. Got the album to my headphones on Friday and listened to it in the train and whatever people say about Damaris. I haven't had such a perfect moment for ages and ages as when that song began. The whole world just clicked into right place.
And I want to make a film with it.
So happy about the whole album. I was so afraid and fearing and dreading to listen to it.

at first i listened to this album in the background so i wasn't really absorbing it, but it's so...so... ->insert synonym for 'incredibly awesome' here<-
when i first heard hard times i immediately thought about the book animal farm because of Boxer constantly saying "I'll work harder". too bad he dies. damn stalin. anyone else think of this?
my fav right now is the bachelor.

Hadn't thought of that, stephy, but now you mention it it's a great image for the song.
I unserstand what you mean about TMP, at first I thought the same but it was saved for me by a few songs which totally changed the feelings undercurrent in the album, namely Bluebells, Magpie and Augustine. When taken in context with the other tracks it gave the whole thing a very different feel.

You know what. This album friggin rules. It actually somehow gets better the more I listen to it. It's just brilliant. Everyone who likes music should hear it. I'm thinking its actually becoming my favorite Patrick album thus far... I can't even imagine what The Conqueror is going to be like.

I was very worried when I bought it on itunes (evil, evil itunes...but no stores sell ANY Patrick Wolf near me ) because of how iffy I was about TMP. First listen I was a tad bit skeptical on some of the songs, but over the week I've had it, I've really come to love love love The Bachelor (album, well and song, but specifically album). And of course, only seven days after buying it, I saw Patrick live in NYC and it was so amazing that I will forever tie the amazing concert to the CD and I am very very pleased with the results. Thanks again Patrick
