Erik got an exalt for this AWESOME THREAD because it is brave in the sense that I myself would never want to start it, and also I agree with what Florence has to say about it!
Anyway I'll post when my acne gets worse. Every other week there comes a couple of nasty zits. This is currently one of those in-between weeks.
Rhianne, I used to get really bad pimples on the edges of my upper lip (I still get them but not as frequently) and my mom thought it was terribly weird/abnormal to get such bad painful zits there so she made me see the doctor about it. And my doctor was this weird mumbling mustachioed man who seemed to not really know what the hell he was doing 'cause he wasn't a proper dermatologist. And of course the day I go in he's got this intern watching him examine me, looking all droll and unexcited, and long story short the whole thing was just totally awkward. The joys of acne!
I'm not a fan of face washes that have a lot of that weird gritty stuff in it, like Proactiv and AcneFree. I swear it made me breakout more. I use normal Clean n Clear now, but I still use Proactiv toner and lotion with it, it seems to work well for me.

you should only really use exfoliants once a week though, right? i love all of bioré's stuff for blemish-prone skin. especially the blackhead warming wash..so warming!!

I spend too much money on face washes/ face cleansing products. I was talking about it with my friend the other day, and we have a theory. All the products, they don't reaaally seem to do much (or at least, never enough). But even so, you get scared to stop using them in case your skin becomes worse the second you do (and it turns out it was doing something all along). So you keep buying and using them. Does anyone else get this, or was it.. just... us?
Also, are there any face washes that completely clear blackheads? And any that really get rid of shine? I've tried a lot of things. Now I use Clean & Clear, the blackhead one, and also the shine reduce one, and fair enough, they do fade away blackheads (don't you just HATE the word blackhead? URGH, disgusting), and reduce shine a little bit. But (I know it's weird) as long as I still notice these things, even while they're really reduced, I'm going to want to put on foundation and power to cover them.
I never, ever, ever look at other people's skin and think it's horrible, and I get so jealous of people who can go to hell with it and don't wear any makeup on their skin, it looks lovely. I resent face/skin makeup so much. But that's how it is; I probably can't help the way I am, etc. So, any recommendations?

well. washing with just water is bad for the skin i think. maybe i just made that up. and cause the skin on your face is different to the skin on your hands, regular soap probably dries it out. so i would say there is justification in using face-washes and stuff. although the obvious good diet, plenty water, plenty excercise and not too much exposure to the sun will make the "need" for medicated face washes/wipes/etc.
sorry that turned into a bit of a patronising lecture there :/
also i don't think it's possible to COMPLETELY get rid of blackheads, but try those T-Zone nose-strip things, used in conjunction with the clean&clear stuff it works pretty well
ALSO i actually think the term whitehead is even worse. ew.

Ahh, I've tried those nose-strip things already. They were okayish... but not worth buying again, I wouldn't say, 'cos they were really expensive for what they were. I guess what I should have said was "I spend too much money on anything to do with facial skincare/too much time obsessing over it", because I'm running out of things I haven't tried :/

yeah that's the one downside with the whole facial skincare stuff, generally fiendishly expensive

st ives apricot scrubis my favourite thing for blackheads. My god, `I love it. Although I've heard it can be damaging, but I don't know how true that is. Also, I know so many people who don't do half the facecare I do and yet have much better skin. Damn.

st ives, YES. i use st ives apricot scrub once every two weeks or something like that (or failing that, something even harsher which is meant for legs but what the hell, my skin feels so thick/gross/cloggy sometimes..) and i swear by bioré products. i bought their blackhead strips today and they're pretty fantastic. but yes, incredibly expensive, it was like £7 for a box of 6. but you don't need to use them that often. as for shine, i find that i only get/feel really oily/greasy when i don't moisturise after i wash my face, which i am really tempted not to do because i feel that putting moisturiser on my oily skin is just going to make it worse... wrong. when we clean our face we also clean away all the natural oils so if we don't moisturise to 'feed' our skin again the skin just produces even more oil to counteract it and then we're more likely to get greasy and we're also prone to more blemishes. i find that simple's oil free moisturiser is really incredible, and bio oil is really good as well but i don't use that all too often (plus it's extortionate also). i use bioré's shine control moisturiser the most, and the bottle looks tiny but you only need one tiny blob of it for your whole face (why don't i just work for this company omg). i also bought some oil absorbing paper from savers which was cheap for a decent sized box and i blot my skin with those before i put make up on. but i do feel your paranoia, florence.. it bugs me that my boyfriend never seems to have spots or even blackheads and he's never used a face product in his life, aside from shaving oil/aftershave moisturiser. so i always wonder if i had never started using products in my teens, would my skin really be in the state it's in? haha. but yeah... my cleansing regime and the clear complexion tablets seem to be doing the job (unless i'm really stressed out/pissed off then voila, i get an eruption of mini face volcanoes) and i refuse to go back to using my acne cream. my main issue is how flaky my skin looks sometimes despite what i do to counteract it... i can only ever use mineral powder foundation because if i try a liquid one, it just highlights all my flaky areas and i look like i have leprosy eta: bioré's website have a short questionnaire you can do to see what products are most suited to your skin type. i found that pretty helpful.

Thank you Jay! I don't have bad acne, just an awful lot of blackheads so thank you very much (My mum had bad skin during her 30s, but had alright skin in her teens. I am wary.)

although the obvious good diet, plenty water, plenty excercise and not too much exposure to the sun will make the "need" for medicated face washes/wipes/etc. A small amount sunlight actually "sanitizes" your skin, for lack of better wording. Prolonged rays damage-- you know the deal. I use SFC lotion soap-free cleanser, but it only comes with Duac. It doesn't dry out my skin at all, and I've read good reviews on it. This is probably not helpful. A few days ago I've started using a calendula gel to soothe and repair my tissue; I've found my face hurts a lot less. I don't know if I'll recommend it yet, but I'm pleased. It was a decent price of $7 for 1.5 oz. I have excessive shine and flaky skin.

I admire you all for posting your acne. I’m too vain and don’t have the balls to participate.
Jay your skin sounds like it behaves in the same way as mine. Currently I have acne fairly bad. Although it never escalates to the levels that it used to likely because these days I take prescribed antibiotics. I still find I have to use other products though. The most success I’ve had is with seaweed face wash and a toner from the body shop. Most other things I’ve tried have been one big spotty fail. I've also found recently I've been wearing an awful lot of makeup. It's starting to make me feel uncomfortable, especially when my mindset after applying the makeup is 'thank god for that, I look young again, that was a close one.' On top of that the makeup makes my ache worse, I’m too weak to not use it though.

I'm pretty sure my skin would be near flawless had I never gone enar foundation. I can't think why I did, I always had very good skin when I was a meagre 14. Weaning yourself off make-up is near impossible though, it's just part of my day now

What as nearly cleaned up my acne is birth control and Bert's Bees tomato soap. I just have large pores, black heads, and scarring left. Some vintage Clare: (I must have been 17. I miss being 17. ) Both of those were on really good days, too. As a bonus, you can also see the mole I had on the tip of my nose. My mother made me get it removed because she thought it might have been cancerous. It wasn't.

ah yes, tomatoes are really good for bad skin. i had a mole removed from my nose too, sometimes when my skin is really bad, my scar looks angry.

Luckily my scar is a teeny little divot.
I am absolutely amazed at how much the tomato soap helped my skin. I have seriously been on so many medications for my acne: Duac, Retin A and an antibiotic that I can't remember were only the latest. There were so many before that I can't even remember. I haven't had a day of clear skin since I was 10. I'm sure my improvement has 95% to do with the birth control, though.

And Jay, I have the Biore tiny-bottle-of moisturizer, too, and I love it And I have facial blotting tissues also (the name makes me laugh (can't you tell I buy anything!?)), and they're super good. They actually work.
