I think he did say it was demolished during a gig that I have listened to. Good things never last...

When ever I listen to the railway house I think of this documentary I don't know why.

The Railway House is my favourite "singing in the shower/singing in the car/singing really loud when no one else is home" song!

Definitely a favourite of mine ! I love the lyrics and how they don't always rhyme, catching you by surprise It really reminds me of the Riddle House from the first chapter of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. to quote; "The villagers of Little Hangleton still called it "the Riddle House", even though it had been many years since the Riddle family had lived there. It stood on a hill overlooking the village, some of its windows boarded, tiles missing from its roof, and ivy spreading unchecked over its face. Once a fine-looking manor, and easily the largest and grandest building for miles around, the Riddle House was now damp, derelict and unoccupied" ehe I can't help but refer to Harry somewhere, sometime.

I was sondering where it is exactly, because I took a trip to the area last year. (cornwall/penzance/Land's End) I may have been close to it without even knowing!

there was an old boarded up house by my old house when I used to live in the country. I called it the witches house, and it had vines and jaggers growing through the windows. I never got to go inside it, but I wouldn't do it because I would probably fall through the floor. I'm trying to figure out if Patrick became mature when staying at the Railway house, because of the lyrics.

So many of his earlier songs make me really happy, like The Railway House. They have a very honest, comfortable feeling about them. But all of my friends find his older stuff really depressing, and only like happy songs from The Magic Position. Ah well.

Probably. Why does it matter?

If I remember right, the lyrics in the booklet has "drugs" in quotes? Don't know what that means.
Edit: I am delusional; disregard this post.

Maybe it's some kind of metphor.
And it matters because...it just does.

It shouldnt matter.....If it was inverted commas then perhaps its a metaphor for vices he used to have but has grown out of or given up. By using the word drug or drugs does not always mean an illegal substance even if it conjures such an image. Surely you could consider feeling extreme emotions to be a form of drug? Such as falling head over heals in love (not suggesting that was his reference, that couldnt be in context).
That or he was hooked on smack!!
What teenagers dont dabble in drugs anyway? I certainly have and know few people who havent. Not condoning it or anything just being honest and realistic.

For some reason, whenever I hear someone not immersed in drug culture use the word drugs, I never think of actual drugs. I always think more of the idea of a drug, like an emotional crutch or maybe a person we use to medicate ourselves so we don't feel as screwed up. So, when I listen to this song, I think of 'growing out of the drugs' more as leaving the things we medicate ourselves with behind. So for me it's more like becoming stable enough to not need anything to lean on.
On another note, I ironically had a railway house of my own down in a valley a little ways away from my home in the hilly country of rural Maryland. It was close to where this old railway had been turned into a hiking trail. I didn't do much growing up there, but I did use it to hide things. To get to it you had to cross this fallen-over tree that crossed a river, so I knew none of the other kids would follow me there. Unfortunately, instead of wild nettles there was just a lot of poison ivy. Hahaha.

I dont think anyone looks at this thread though or they dont care anymore. So I thankyou for responding! I think you may be right about the emotional crutch thing.

I believe it was in London and that he lived in the railway house with Ingrid as mentioned in a previous interview. But one can never be too sure seeing as how Patrick openly admits he has told half truths in his earlier interviews...
