Not been around here for a good while now. Loved Pat to bits, bought all the music, and attended tons of gigs, from the early days at Club Suicide and The Southern in Manchester, the majesty of WITW, all the way past the fluff fest of the Magic Position era, taking in the career high Bachelor tour, until finally bailing out after seeing two dates on the awful Lupercalia tour. (Pat took apathy to new levels during those gigs, in fact he may as well have named it the 'Hey I'm in love - so let's get this moral obligation of a jaunt out of the goddam way and let me get back to William and cocoa' tour).
Due to my dayjob, I have my hand on a few pulses and it's been noticable that Pat's stock has seriously dropped off over the last few years. Now, I don't yet want to pose the question "where did at all go wrong?" - as my admiration for ye olde Patrick will never wane, so, instead, I'll ask "HAS it all gone wrong?". And then, if so, "Why"?
So, have I missed something? (aside from rehash albums of course), or, should the inquest now begin?

I personally think Sundark and Riverlight was his greatest album to date. Especially when you compare his voice to the way it sounded on the earlier releases (not that it didn't sound great then, but his singing style has developed dramatically these past 2 albums). It's a shame you haven't liked any of the the later releases, but I think you're in the minority. I haven't seen his fanbase even remotely decrease in number these past few years, and 99.9% of opinions I've heard have been positive.
Each album has been drastically different depending on what Patrick's been going through, how he's been feeling, etc. and that's one of the things I like most about his music. So when he's happy he writes more positive music (e.g. Lupercalia and The Magic Position). I like it (plus I thought it was great to see him so happy on stage/in person!), the majority of the wolfpack like it... I'm sorry you don't, but he obviously can't please everybody.

(For me) Riverdark is far from his greatest album. It's a rehash. Nice, but recycled music all the same. As for a non decreasing fanbase? Well, I can tell you that his northern concert audiences began waning since the aforementioned Lupercalia tour (I'm in the know on that)and haven't recovered since. Moreso, he doesn't seem interested in arresting that decline. Appreciate your thoughts though, and they are of course, just as valid as mine. May I suggest though that your defensive tone may indicate that you are seeing things through rose tinted glasses? Blinded by loyalty perhaps? (No offence meant here).

I don't believe I am "blinded by loyalty", as nothing (not even his earlier albums) have ever touched my heart the way his latest 2 releases Brumalia and S&R have. As far as I'm aware nobody seems to have observed a waning in his fanbase in the close to 20 other countries where I have wolfpack friends... I certainly haven't observed it in Scotland. Maybe it's only in the north of England. I've been to several shows in the north of England during the S&R/post-S&R era and the venues have been packed, the audiences blown away... but that's just my experience.

I was at the Edinburgh show too (there wasn't one in 2012 - I guess you mean Feb 2013?) and it was one of my favourites I've ever been to! He was in such a great mood, he had amazing energy and I loved how he laughed and joked with the audience, telling funny stories. In fact I was so overwhelmed by how good it was I forgot to ask for a setlist for the first time ever! I've seen him 13 times since then and each show has been incredible - the new songs sounded beautiful and I really can't wait to hear the next album! Things have been a little disorganised recently, but I'm sure he'll sort himself out once he returns from his sabbatical and is ready to release the new album. And he has his own record label now doesn't he, so finding someone to release it shouldn't be an issue.

no proper website, no communication, no current facebook presence. Very poor when there are still pending orders of a book put up for sale over half a year ago.

I've now cancelled my order for this mythical book, - holding little hope of getting my money back - and am looking for a new Patrick Wolf. The old one seems to have given up the ghost.
