I'm just going to make a new thread for this, so I don't keep spamming the 2013 dates thread for those of you who don't care
It was the most random night - the first half was a photography award ceremony (mainly in Portuguese), and the second half was a PW concert!! The doors didn't open til 9.30pm and by the time Patrick came on stage it was after 11.30pm!! Apparently he'd prepared a 2 hour set, then found out he only had an hour to play so he had to re-write the setlist (apparently Eustacia was in the original set!!!!!!!) It was the most wonderful show though - Patrick came on stage on his own at first and started playing the piano... and guess what song he opened with – PUMPKIN SOUP!!!!! I’d always wanted to hear that live!!! It was only Patrick and accordion Will playing the whole show (the first time I’d ever seen him play without Victoria!) It sounded amazing though, the accordion was a sort of substitute violin – the flourishy bits in Hard Times and everything like that were all done on the accordion! He played Bluebells second, followed by Hard Times. Then he went over to the harp and started playing Jacob’s Ladder - on the harp… WITH LOOPING!!!! You know how I love my looping! Aaaahh it was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard – he added a few extra lyrics and everything! We also got To The Lighthouse – another song I’d been dying to hear for years and years!!!! He came out with all his usual funny stories and banter… and stopping songs like “Oh wait, I’ve got another story about this song!” and “Hold on a minute, I need to burp!” He did attempt to do a bit of a Q&A at one point, but nobody really shouted anything out and Patrick was like “I can just answer your questions with songs!” He said if anybody had any questions we could shout them out, or he'd just sing if that was what we'd rather. I think most people were a bit shy to shout out and I was just like “Think… think!!!!”, but all I could think was “Tell us your December tour schedule!!!”, which somehow didn’t seem fitting! We also got The Sun Is Often Out, he told us a story about falling in love with Steven Vickery – he worked in a record shop Patrick used to go to and he used to always switch the number one album on the display to Lycanthropy for Patrick! It was a very emotional performance The encore was amazing – he came on wearing a Greenpeace hoodie he said he’d made when he was 16 and played a solo acoustic version of Battle on the piano!!!!!! He crumpled up my setlist and threw it on the floor, haha! He was hitting the piano keys with his foot at one point, I can’t remember if that was Battle or earlier. After Battle somebody was shouting “Play the piano with both feet!” So he managed to lean back on his seat and actually played the first verse of The City with both feet instead of his hands!!! Then he was like “I need some drums!” so we he got us all to clap as the drums!
The first Portuguese phrase I learnt was "Can I have a setlist please?", hahaha I never got to use it though, everyone spoke English - in fact the woman who gave me the setlist was one of Patrick's crew! I was really lucky - there was another guy asking but they only had 2 and had to keep one, so I was the only person to get one!! I'll post a picture:
He didn't play TOML, Enchanted or A&E... and Jacob's Ladder was after Hard Times, but apart from that I think he stuck to it! The setlist was written on the bank of part of his flight confirmation email, hahaha it didn't have any actual details on it but it did have his booking number!!
We waited for him after the show - my friends had never met him before so I was glad they finally got to meet him!! When he came out he was like “Hello Cat!” and gave me a hug… he was wearing a jumper covered in cats and he something along the lines of “Look, cats!” Haha I have no idea how he knew I love cats so much!! I told him it was my 10th show and he congratulated me! I asked him how many winter shows he was doing and he said he was playing Holland because Will’s from there, and Berlin, and he started to list the UK shows…I asked him if it was just the four UK shows and he said yes, so I was like “Ok now I can book trains!” I told him about how I didn’t think I could make Brighton and he was like “You don’t have to come to them all!!!” He said he’d be happy even if I just came to one, and I was like “but I really really want to come to them all!!!” And then he started telling us that every show was going to be different (as if that helped!) And he was saying he wasn’t sure who’d be playing with him in London – it sounds like it sounds like he might have guests and stuff like the last London show! And he mentioned that he was going to be bringing electronics back into his shows and I told him how excited I was about the theremin! At one point we were talking about Ramsgate, where I'm living right now and he asked what I was doing there - I told him I was working for Pfizer (who are a big pharmaceutical company) for my placement year and he said his sister works for GlaxoSmithKline (he was struggling to remember the name of it – he was like “Glaxo… GlaxoSmith-something…??”) Haha I had no idea, they took on about half my year for placements – 2 of my friends are working there! At one point I also mentioned he'd played 3 songs I hadn't live heard before and he asked me which ones - he sounded interested to know! And it turned out he was on that crazy early flight back to London I'd almost booked - he was saying he had to leave at 5am (it was already 1.30am at this point!!!) Eve got a couple of pictures of us all with him too (I felt like I'd asked for way too many pictures with him before so I didn't want to ask for another one, haha! )
