My poster ;D So now i can stop worrying that he doesn't like me!!!
Anyway, the show... the seats were like big long cushioned benches and it was quite strange because everyone was sitting spread out all over the place and a lot of rows seemed to be half empty... i was right at the front middle of course!
The stage was really high up which wasn't great - it was above head level and Patrick's high enough up as it is
But it was fine, i got used to looking up the whole time and Patrick was so close
There was video footage playing in the background - i forgot to pay attention to it most of the night though because i was too busy watching Patrick, and it was hard to see behind all the speakers and instruments and people on the stage
But i remember seeing footage from the Overture video, the Sundark and Riverlight symbols kept coming up, and i think there was quite a lot of pictures of young Patrick... the only one i can remember was Patrick as a child with his head in one of those guillotine things - you know where you put your head and hands through the holes.
Patrick was in such a good mood, he was talking to us between all the songs and he kept making jokes and telling us really funny stories... the best was his original idea for the House video, apparently he begged his record label to let him film it at the bingo in Elephant and Castle - he wanted to be the bingo caller and every time someone got "house" a different exotic animal would arrive!!! Apparently his record label then dropped him...
But then he found someone who understood his vision to an extent!
Here is the setlist (the show was so wonderful that i actually forgot to ask for one - i remembered 10 minutes later and went back in, luckily it hadn't already been given away!)
He actually stuck exactly to the setlist, except the encore was just The Libertine not The City. I'd never heard The Days or William before - for William Patrick and Victoria were both playing the violin and it sounded really folk-ish, it was lovely
And then it turned into Pigeon Song. And Careless Talk - i never thought i'd hear that live!!! Will was on the accordion and Patrick was just singing and he was telling us about how it was written for him by Angelo Badalamenti for a film about Dylan Thomas and he told Patrick he'd ripped off Enchanted
And for The Falcons he was telling us about how he was on holiday in Wales and he saw a rusting mine in a museum and he'd been thinking about the line "look at the rusting of that old machinery, rusting away a part of history" and he was saying that now he feels like it's about politics and the gay marriage bill being passed and how he's no longer being made to feel like a 2nd or 3rd class citizen, so it's like it's all rusting away to history.
It got to nearly the end of the night and Patrick was sitting at the piano and he said he'd had a request for this evening and he was afraid it was a very sad song... and i knew finally it was going to happen!!! And i had tears in my eyes then, because i'd been dreaming for years of this moment and now it was actually happening... He said it was about having somebody love you so much but you don't love them back, even though you want to desperately (which i did not actually know and i can't say i've ever experienced...
) And he said it was called Penzance and i think a few people gasped but i already knew of course... it was so beautiful - it was the only song he played solo the whole night, it was just Patrick on the piano <3 And i didn't get as emotional as i thought i would - it was mainly the anticipation that made me cry... but it was so incredible and it was so nice of him to play it just for me
I'll have to not request any more songs for a long time now!
After Penzance he said he was going to stop the banter before the next song because it was so depressing - he was saying no one in the UK has anything positive to say about their town and there's no romance - the only answers he remembers getting when he asks where you'd take someone to propose are McDonalds (that was Glasgow!
), Primark and Burger King!!! But then a few people shouted out Arthur's Seat... so apparently Edinburgh is officially the most romantic place in the UK! And he was like "won't you be tired when you get to the top?"
So he turned round to the piano and was about to start playing when he was like "Shit, that's not even the right song - that's supposed to be the encore!!!"
It was actually meant to be Bermondsey Street next so he changed the words to "she kisses him on Arthur's Seat"
That was maybe why he missed out The City in the encore
And The Libertine was the most amazing encore (hence why i forgot all about setlists) - my friend filmed it so i'll post the video:
I love the face he does at the end - it reminds me of the picture of him doing that really funny angry face which i put as the artwork for Beastiality
I only took 2 pictures because i get embarrassed by my flash going off and my camera is very temperamental in the dark
But they actually turned out not horrendous for once
Oh because i was sad there were no posters for the show, for some reason i decided it would be a good idea to steal the list of stage times off the wall on the way out!!! I have no idea why, what am i going to do with it???
Patrick turns me into such a rebel - stealing things off walls, skiving uni, ducking under the security barriers in Edinburgh uni sports centre because there were no toilets closer than 10 or 15 minutes away, and i couldn't be gone for long in case Patrick came out (i would not have heard Bitten live if i hadn't done that!
) Haha i was following the signs for the toilets and i ended up having to go down corridors and up some stairs and then into the changing room toilets!
Oh i really really want to talk about after the show now but it would probably be wise to go to bed now so i don't have another sleep deprived day tomorrow... so it'll have to wait for now
Oh yes and i'll try and upload my recording tomorrow (i don't like making videos because i don't want to watch the show through a screen so i let my ipod record the whole thing in my bag)... it's actually not bad quality - you can hear everything Patrick's saying so i'll upload it so you can hear all the stuff he was coming out with!
(I would do it now but i have to try and figure out if i can crop it so there's not 15 minutes of random background noise at the end when i forgot to turn it off
)
