er yeah well yes that expresses pretty much what THAT night did to me...
This was my 2nd time seeing Patrick in concert and it was so amazing I can't even imagine how he'll ever top THAT...
Damn it give this boy a stage that is furnished like a living-room and you'll get a mixture of live music gig, theater performance and entertainment show. And I am serious!!! I was even more impressed what he did to this stage + the piano than the socked security men and the elderly which stayed unaware what awaited them!
The stage was at ground level. It practically was a "living-room" Yeah I'm not joking. It was like watching Patrick and Alec in a studio haha
There were several chairs (or rather armchairs), Persian carpets on the floor, a small couch table with a table lamp on it AND the said door - and he did to that frame + the one wing what Niwo already said...
It was insanely amazing to watch him move all this furniture around and interact with all the stuff - I know you can hardly imagine what should be so funny about that, but be patient I'll try and explain
Alec came onstage with his famous sunglasses on, turned on his "machines" and started playing, Patrick joined in on the shiny black grand piano, all dressed up in a marvellous black velvet suit with a white chemise and a bow tie. The grannies and grandpas seemed pleased at that sight (before the Patrick/Alec show there had been an extremly avant-garde free jazz whatsoeverdon'taskmewhatit'scalled session, all the intellectuals gathering in one room assuring each other how great it had been, previously shushing us youngsters if we had dared to whisper during the bands' performance).
Most of the audience (the ones who didn't know Patrick or Alec) stayed during the whole performance on their seats, while we had ensured front row "seats" on pillows around the stage (it was a square and the seats were all around it) . Of course we only stayed seated for like the first song and then one rose up, the rest of the die-hard fans immediatly followed. Dancing, headbanging and all the rest followed (what my hurting neck + feet still remind me of
).
Don't ask of me to reproduce the whole setlist, I'm still way too tired to remember all the songs, snippets of songs and never before heard improvised stuff they played - let alone the sequence. I guess there was no real setlist, so much of it was spontaneous.
Apart from the songs Niwo already mentioned I remember a nice, shortenend version of "The sun is often out" and the remix of "Time of my life" and sth from WITW if I'm not completely mistaken...which is quite possible.
And the f*cking freaking CHILDCATCHER!!! DAMMIT! I thought we'd never ever hear that song again!!!! I feel so blessed
haha
Patrick played on his harp, on the piano and the viola, at first even switching from one to the other within one song...his singing was of course as smooth (and rough if needed) as one can imagine.
After he had warmed up a bit he started moving around the furniture. And while he sang
"The Childcatcher" he performed some kind of lap-dance on one of the upholstered chairs in front of a guy who didn't seem to get what was happening in front of him (he looked quite shocked, I guess he didn't know Patrick Wolf at all ;D). Then he threw the chair over and continued his devastating stroll on set: passing by Alec and throwing over a little table on which water bottles had been placed, moving over to the piano and jumping on the chair, seating himself on the piano and yeah well playing it with his...B*TT bump, bump, bump...just like that - want me to draw you a picture? or do you get it?
(I guess the security was quite shocked at that sight, I wish I'd seen their faces...) But the piano wasn't harmed...only a bit out of tune afterwards I guess...
So basically - without having seen any previous performance of "The Childcatcher" - I'd say it was the BEST performance EVER he's done of that song...PERIOD.
In loose order now some other highlights of the show:
Somewhere in the middle he started moving the one-winged door frame and danced in the frame, twined himself around the wing, tried to use it like monkey bars and finally managed to throw it over which caused the knock over of the harp, if I remember it rightly...in another song he layed himself down in the dropped frame, which looked like he was performing Dracula in a "coffin" (as Fea put it
) He even managed to get the whole thing up again, but no doubt he s*cked at physics in school...we could hardly hold ourselves back and not run onstage to help him
As there was no real means for a great lightshow, Alec used the chandelier as a sort of disco light which was as ridiculous as it sounds ;D
At the near end Patrick and Alec randomly started talking to each other, asking the audience if they should still play one song or not, Patrick going on about that door and how much he always wanted to have a door onstage - preferably with a costume change whenever he walked through it...sent Alec through the door and babbling about how it would be as if someone new came onstage if you walk through the door...I was laughing so hard that whole evening, it was like the "Patrick Wolf and Alec Empire Evening Show" or sth...
Patrick was showing off with his new iPad and telling how Alec despised him for using it...Actually IT was the reason Patrick ran off stage right after they had just arrived, whispering sth in Alecs ear and then rushing back with his iPad...it was like stand-up comedy everyone was laughing ;D it could have been an ad...Apple should pay Patrick XD
The best thing was Patrick seating himself in the armchair next to us playing with the table lamp, illuminating his face from various directions. Then he jumped on the three-legged couch table next to it, pulled violently on the lamp's wire and danced on the thing that we feared it would break or he'd fall.
In the end he smashed the lamp (by accident or design) and broke the bulb.
Patrick "danced" with several of his fans onstage which looked quite dangerous - but again no one was hurt
The best laughing moment ever: Alec doing his fist in the air thing - we all had waited for it the whole time and when he finally did it the whole front row bursted out in insane laughter - instead of raising their fists as well... ;D
Patrick: "So which instrument shall I play? You know it's interactive now, tell me which instrument you want me to play!" some guy: "Not the harp!" Patrick "But it's traditional!"
The moment where I embarressed myself: Alec asking for more cheering, I started howling a bit bizarre (like on loop) all alone and everyone started laughing before they finally joined in ;DThe best thing was that I saw a mother with her 10-13 year old son watching the show - I hope she did let him stay for the whole time, that boy for sure had a blast of an evening!
;D
That's it for now from me...be assured we had a great time afterwards as well, taking pictures with Patrick and Alec and chatting about half an hour with them...apparently "everyone" speaks German on the tour bus...so Patrick promissed to learn it until next year...oh yes Patrick we believe you
He learned how to say "forgive me" and how to propose in German...and he said both of it to a fan...I still don't understand how he could refuse Patrick's offer of marriage...
