But don't be a teacher, the pay's lousy and you will hate yourself. I have this strange terrible fear of one day throwing in the towel and saying fuck it, I guess I'm just gonna go have to be a teacher. I'm majoring in Film in Animation, which I'm really excited about, but I'm also nervous that I will fail miserably at it for some reason. And if I do, there is absolutely... nothing else that I'm interested in. I just like to goof around, that's what I'm interested in. But you can't get a degree in goofing around and get a job where that's applicable except for maybe high school teacher, but that's the last place I ever want to end up. I'm just hoping that my love of goofing around will translate well into film and cartoon making and SOMEBODY out there will take my goofing around seriously.

I'm planning to start studying French in Autumn, or, if University of Glasgow accepts me - French with Italian. But probably just French, because at the moment my grades at school are terrible :s I don't know what I'm going to do with it and I don't want to be a teacher, but I love the French language and languages in general. Maybe I'll be a translator ;D

i started studying optometry last year, but went a bit mental, so dropped out after a semester and applied for genetics in glasgow, which i'm going to start in september. this year was a waste of time, but at least i realised what i really want to study, as biology and chemistry were my best subjects i would kill to become a proper scientist, but i wouldn't mind going into scientific journalism either, which will probably be it

I graduated on Saturday. This thread makes me sad. Technically my BA is in Art and Art History, since they're one department at my tiny school, but I concentrated in Studio. I miss my school. All of the professors were wonderful and so smart. Now I'm taking a year off to beef up my portfolio so I can apply to MFA programs later, and that's pretty exciting. And Jade, if you're doing video stuff you should read Martha Rosler's "Video: Shedding the Utopian Moment" because Martha Rosler is pretty cool. (She came to my campus, I asked her to sign my chest, she refused and looked uncomfortable, I felt bad. Good times!)

I had my first commencement ceremony on Saturday as well (for legal studies). My gender and women's studies commencement is on Thursday. I'm going to miss my gws professors, I love them so much.

Thanks for the heads up, I think I have read a few articles dotted around like in artforum and stuff, but I haven't read any large essays so I will try to find it. Congrats on your graduation

I'm in just the right mood for a thread like this. I have this very day only just returned home from my first year on a MA course for English Lit at Aberdeen University This means kind of a lot to me because, a few years back, I attempted the whole higher education thing at Strathclyde Uni in Glasgow and fucked it up horribly. I was way too young and stupid to handle it at the time and things kind of got out of hand. Not particularly proud of how things turned out but I learned some pretty big lessons from it. Studied Performing Arts for a year after that then worked for 3 more years before the recession kicked in and I was made redundant. Got in to Aberdeen through clearing and here I am. I'm so happy that I've finally started in the path I set out to follow 5 years ago. As far as what I'm thinking of doing with it, I can sympathise with the level of intellectual snobbery that is the burden of studying any arts degree. People will send so much time telling you it's not practical when they're simply just wrong. I want to be a writer, mainly fiction and travel writing, and had much of my plan for this worked out even before I knew Uni would be an option. Something like this is a growing experience and informs your chosen art, greatly improving your ability to practice it, but it's also a great way to have yourself taken more seriously in an industry that values individual initiative. Proving that you're willing to carefully study the work of others and capable of extracting valuable lessons from it proves much. I'm so giddy right now you wouldn't believe!
