I use a Divacup (Mooncup is a UK brand, I think, or the difference is that a Diva is made out of silicone and Moon out of rubber) but anyway I recommend a menstrual cup for everyone because they are so great to use! Like really. There's not "tipping over" and "spilling" because it stays in via suction. I had more leakage with tampons than I ever have had with a cup. The only incident I had was once it was really full and when I was emptying it it slipped, but luckily most of the blood landed in the toilet anyway. And I didn't drop it in the toilet.
Cups are also great because you save money overall since you don't have to keep on buying pads or tampons every month. There's also the environmental impact of all the paper and plastic you'd stop using.
The Divacup manufacturer doesn't explicitly recommend boiling, but many users like doing that. All it really needs is a good wash with very hot water and soap. If it starts to get discolored (I mean, sitting around with blood in it all day = stain city) you can just wipe it with hydrogen peroxide and it looks as good as new!
I know that when you first hear about a cup? in MY vagina?? woah, gross, amirite? but it's more likely than you think! Seriously, cups are wonderful and I have had such good experiences with mine that I can wholeheartedly recommend then to anyone who is interested. Like, with pads and tampons I hated my period because I was constantly anxious about getting blood on my clothes, and I hated changing things every few hours, But with a cup, you can leave it in for up to twelve hours! I've left mine in for longer with no ill effects, but you probably shouldn't do that. Also, collecting is better than absorbing, because tampons absorb EVERYTHING it touches, leaving your ladybits dry as a bone. A cup, since it isn't absorbent, doesn't do that.
Have you ever used a tampon that is too absorbent? Removing it is hell!
Okay, this post is getting too long, but if you've ever thought of getting one, GET IT.
Edit: I don't think that my boyfriend would appreciate me sharing period sex anecdotes on the internet, but let's just say that damn it, I'm going to have sex whenever I want.

Hmm, I just ordered one now actually, I'm so suggestible it's unreal You make me laugh ;D I know someone who gets them once a year, but she gets them at the most inoppurtune moments, i.e. Christmas day abroad when no shops were open and she was staying with her dad, the day before going on an African safari, etc... poor Emily

That would be a proper reason for me to use one! sometimes I get a very bloody surprise in my bed at morning when I slept too long... and yes.. the hell with vigina dryers.

I think the only reason to leave it in for less than twelve hours at a time is that you don't want to fill it up to the top. (And TSS and stuff, but cups already aren't that much of a risk)

Godd that sounds a nightmare! So she has no way of predicting when the next will be? Is it like an actual medical condition or something? Edit: What an interesting post mimicry! Thanks for all that. Can you feel it like...filling up if that's not too personal? I can imagine that being weird.

I was wondering the same thing.
Argh, I wish my period wasn't so inconsistant, it doesn't come on a specific day but...when it feels like coming. It gets delayed in months! I remember when I didn't get it for four months, man

RE: mooncups, I searched for my nearest stockest on the site, thinking it would be somewhere really obscure, but they're in Boots in my local highstreet! That will save me asking my dad to get me one on his credit card... It's £22, but I guess it might be worth it overall.

By the way, I am willing to be TMI with all of you about cups. Have any questions? Ask away! BUT HOW DOES IT EVEN GO IN?!?!?!! You fold it in half, stick it in, then it pops open. Make sure that it's open all the way, wiggle it around a little to make sure it's in the right spot and ta-dah! Cups do sit lower in the canal than tampons, so it's not like shoving anything all the way up. One warning about insertion: just make sure it doesn't pop open when it's halfway in. From personal experience I can say... ouch. Re: filling it up: I personally can't because being on the pill has made my periods super light. The Divacup has two lines, one marked 7.5ml (1/4 oz) and the other is 15ml (1/2 oz), so you can even measure our flow if you want (or have to for medical reasons). They can really hold a lot. At the 15ml line there's still about a cm of space to the top. I'd only fill up to about that line because the removal process involves squeezing it a little in order to break the suction seal. You don't want to overflow. Edit: On my heaviest days pre-pill I've managed to fill this up between 7.5 - 15ml in an eight hour time span. Heavier flows may want to empty more frequently.

Yay, menstrual cups! I use a DivaCup too, and it has honestly made my life so much easier. Seriously, I think everyone should go for it -- better for you, better for your wallet, better for the environment. And you never have to worry about running out of pads or tampons. What's not to like? I suggest checking out menstrualcups.org, which is a livejournal community where you can learn everything you want to know and more about menstrual cups. Just check out the tags on the right-hand side to sort through topics. eta: Nope! It makes sense -- periods are something that about half of the world's population experiences, yet female reproductive systems are still so poorly understood and periods are practically a taboo topic of conversation. Like, even with all those maxipad ads on tv, they avoid talking about periods as much as possible, even using blue fluid as a stand-in for blood, because red is too realistic and we all know that menstruation is gross or something. I think it's great for guys to want to know what goes on with women's bodies.

You guys are totally making me want one. And Florence it's at my boots down the road too, I was surprised. My period is due on Wednesday. It's always a wednesday as I'm on the pill so I always know when it comes. Rarely does it come on the Thursday instead. So if I want one, I have until wednesday to decide

^GET IT JADEFACE! I got my Mooncup (Mooncups are also made out of silicone as much as I know) over a year ago and WOAH I love it. I was a bit iffy at first when I read about it and found the whole emptying thing a bit gross but I was just too curious so I couldn't not try it. I empty mine only once a day when I shower and find it the easiest and the least messy way and after one very awkward conversation with my creepy housemate (Oh what are you cooking?- erm. well, im boiling my menstrual cup. -oh.ok....Your WHat? ) I just wash the cup with a bit of Bronners every time I take it out and it's completely fine. I even gave my friend a Mooncup for her birthday, she was so happy that she started her period straight away.haha.

HI I HAVE A MOONCUP QUESTION. Can you use it when you have less heavy flow? I don't get super heavy ones, maybe 2 days it is, and the rest is really light. Is it safe to wear regardless of how heavy you are? I just wonder this because tampons basically say not to use when you're super light and there's not enough to absorb. But maybe this is because of the whole absorption situation. If I can wear it from start to finish, I might be sold. Or at least try it. Haha.
