I’m a First year student of English and a few weeks ago we were assigned to research various accents of English. My group has chosen the Australian accent (remember Steve Irwin’s way of talking? That’s it!), and I have to research people’s attitude towards it. If you would be so kind to fill in these questions, you’d help me out a lot! (Note: this is mostly for native speakers of English.)
Name: Age: Hometown: If you hear a speaker with an Australian accent, does your opinion of him/her change? - How? (Describe lifestyle, intelligence, etc.) - Why do you think this is?

Name: Joshua Wynne Age: 23 Hometown: The 'ford. If you hear a speaker with an Australian accent, does your opinion of him/her change? yes - How? (Describe lifestyle, intelligence, etc.) I automatically guard my valuables more closely from the obvious filthy convict, if the opportunity arises I will call some of my friends to deliver a savage beating to said individual while shouting "england for the english!" - Why do you think this is? My perception is the empirical, unquestionable truth, and my perception is that all non English people are genetically impure and must be ran out of our fair land before they pollute the gene pool. Especially thieving work shy Aussies.

Perhaps if more people watched Flight of the Conchords, the world would be a better place.

amazingly, i constantly bring up that the australian accent is the least sexy accent of all predominantly english-speaking countries. they can still be alright people though. I have to disagree with you there... Southern American accents, especially south-eastern American accents are, in my opinion, the least sexy by far. Really American accents in general just aren't all that attractive to me.. Irish ones get me ALL the time Favourite accent of all is the Russian, which i wish i could speak I love Irish and Scottish accents.. They are so lovely My brother-in-law (who is Belarusian) is trying to teach my sister to speak Russian, but it is such a difficult language to learn! I only know how to say "I want beer" and "Bitch" myself. Haha.. Those are the only two things that stuck.

ARE JU OFFENDIN' MAH PPLES?
it's okay. my dad's side's really southern but i don't have an accent. when you think about it though, southern accents are a lot closer to english accents than you'd think.
Name: Chloe Age: 15 Hometown: Los Angeles If you hear a speaker with an Australian accent, does your opinion of him/her change? yes - How? (Describe lifestyle, intelligence, etc.) it's more... exotic to me. i find it easier to listen to and stay interested when they're talking. unless it's steve irwin. i find him annoying. - Why do you think this is? because i'm bored and embarassed by the US. i'd rather go live in switzerland again.

As an Australian myself I feel the need to defend our accent.
Steve Irwin's accent is EXTREME to no end. Nobody sounds like that except for perhaps, bogans. So to judge all Australian accents by that is annoying and reminds me why I never liked Steve Irwin to begin with. Normal Australian accents are more subtle, like Cate Blanchett, Heath Ledger etc.
So please, rid yourselves of the stereotype put forth by knobs like Crocodile Dundee, Steve Irwin etc. And we don't have kangeroos as pets, or koalas in the backyard, or wear khaki clothing all the time.

Well I am from North Carolina so I am around some of the most unattractive southern accents out there.. I think part of my dislike for southern accents comes from having been around them my whole life, and I just get really sick of hearing them all of the time. My Dad's side is very southern, but he actually doesn't have much of an accent. My mother, on the other hand, has an extremely southern accent. Which is strange as she grew up in Connecticut.. when you think about it though, southern accents are a lot closer to english accents than you'd think. This is true.. I tell myself that all of the time so that I'll feel better about my own southern accent

Name: Jacqui Age: 17 Hometown: Sydney If you hear a speaker with an Australian accent, does your opinion of him/her change? Depends on how strong the accent it is -- and yes, this is coming from an Australian herself! - How? (Describe lifestyle, intelligence, etc.) If it's the "normal" one, ie the one I hear everyday, my opinion doesn't change because I'm accustomed to it. Keep in mind this accent is much more milder than the stereotypical "Croc Dundee" one. When I hear the broad, country, Steve Irwin accent my opinion might slightly alter -- unfortunately I associate those kind of accents with a country, uneducated, ignorant persona. - Why do you think this is? Because I live in the city, and I'm not used to hearing such strong "bogan" accents. And the stereotype that goes with this accent is not a pretty one.

Name: Madeline Age: 17 Hometown: Adelaide, South Australia Although i am Australian i don't have much of an accent because i have a very British Upbringing. I do tend to act differently with those with a Pure Australian accent though. - How? Because it can most times sound rather upfront with their pronounciation and sometimes make them sound rough. Especially with Australian men particularly ones with beards and a can of Beer in their hand. - Why do you think this is? because it is quite the normality in the area i live in. I find an Australian womans accent is easy to understand as it is rather dry. But with Australian men i find it's different depending on what area you live in. a good comparison is Queenslanders and Melbourners. It's almost two differenct accents.

Name:Mia Age:16 Hometown: central coast(its a place not an area etc.), Australia If you hear a speaker with an Australian accent, does your opinion of him/her change? Considering where i live, its natural and i doesn't really affect or bother me. - How? (Describe lifestyle, intelligence, etc.) I feel aussies are laid back. Our accent seems to reflect this a little too much sometimes (ie. the stereotype: lazinesss I suppose) - Why do you think this is? The length of time it can take to say things or a weird phrases('flaming galahs') i dont even know why we say them, but we do. Its okay though, i reep great joy from it.
