It's really not that difficult.... I don't know Garfunkle unfortunately, although my friend's nickname is Garfunkle, I guess that doesn't count. I do know Art though.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single art in possesion of a good fortune must be in want of an art.
Edit: Sorry I'm not sure why I felt the need to say this. Darn you Jane Austen!!

Art is often a pretentious attempt to display pseudo-individuality.
Other times, it is the consequence of serious heart and soul. And serious brilliance.
Society could never survive without it. I couldn't.

Wow, Roxy thats so true. I hate it when people use art in a pretentious way, like theyre trying to prove something, about themselves, to other people. It's about inner beauty and true individuality.
Im so glad some people are taking this seriously now. Maybe the question was too big, for some people to deal with at first.

"What is the meaning of life" is too big. "What is your favorite kind of music" is too small. But "what is art" is juuuust right.

I think art is too subjective to have a definition. A lot of what gets called art doesn't do anything for me at all and I wouldn't call it art, but it's become more of a genre than a concept. Because it's impossible -and unhelpful- to choose what is art and what isn't, everything that is expressed in certain media will be called art, regardless of wherther or not anybody thinks that it is artistic.
