Are you all trying to tell me that singers are not magical creatures?!
Well, that's a downer.

I'm afraid not, young folklaure. Musicians are in fact all freakshows for us to observe their beautiful rises and jeer at their eventual downfall.

Peach, Plum, Pear is adorable. She is starting to sound a bit too much like Kate Bush these days; more than is good for her anyway. Dear o dear. I preferred it when her songs sounded imcomparable to anybody else. Nevermind. Her voice is far better on Ys than Milk-Eyed Mender. Has anybody got her home-recorded EPs? Seb sent me Peach, Plum, Pear from Walnut Whales, and it's dreadful actually... I'm seeing her later this year; rather excited!

I love Ys but for all its weirdness, it sounds less original than Milk-Eyed Mender. I saw her twice last year! It was gorrrgeous.

Does miss Newsom memorize her lyrics for live performances? Because if she does, then I doubt she's human.

For me, the greatest harmony in the history of harmonies, is the swell of little people voices on "Peach, Plum, Pear" Oh and yessums, the version of "Cosmia" on Joanna Newsom and the Ys street band EP is hairstandsuponthebackofneck tingly.

Does miss Newsom memorize her lyrics for live performances? Because if she does, then I doubt she's human. I kept thinking this all the way through hearing "Y's", she really must have practiced and rpacticed and practiced.
However, this fascinating (and essential) interview with her in Wire magazine reveals many a secret to exactly what "Y's" is about.

I missed the original Joanna Newsom thread, but after hearing "Y's" I knew that I knew I'd never heard another record anything like that.
I get seriously emo to "Only Skin". Everytime, I just burst into tears. Yeah, Seb, a big girls blouse, but you feel its such a personal record for her, and yet at the same time she's emulating the classical epic poets (Homer) and signing about human mortality and the flux and the trials of all relationships we have with people on earth.
It's also a fascinating insight into the natural scenery of North America. She sure knows a lot about the local flaura and fauna.

I think everyone has got emo to Only Skin once in a while! And Cosmia, that song is such a grower, but it is so sad and beautiful.. One of the best things about Ys is that it seems to reveal new things everytime you listen to it; the other day i was on a train listening to Emily and think i may've got the true meaning of one of the lines that i'd never really thought about that much before, and it was such an amazing moment. Gotta love her incredibly complicated lyrics. Also, her songs are an educational source of wonder.. I've learnt so many new words from obsessively listening to her, and now sound like a true genius in everyday conversation. Not really. But i am using the concept of a panopticon (from Yarn and Glue) in my philosophy coursework

"stay with me for a while, thats an awfully real gun"
One of the coolest moments in the history of pop music right here with the delivery of that lyric.
I feckin' love Ys lately is the first bona fide classic album since either I See A Darkness, 69 Love Songs or In The Aeroplane Over The Sea at the tail end of the Nineties.

it's so annoying cuz recently i'm getting into these truly amazing singer songwriters and i find out that they were in Ireland like two months ago or whatever..
this includes Joanna Newsom. Who i don't know that much of but have a few songs on a mix CD. she is lovely, really.
She reminds me of strawberries, is that wrong!?

Yeah. It's definitely a classic. Remember that top ten albums thread? Well I have to boot one off and put this in there. Top five even. It may seem a little hasty, but I get the shivers for the whole length of the record. That hasn't happened since....well....that just hasn't happened ever.

I've been wondering lately when she's ever going to finish touring Ys and maybe start doing work on her new album. I'm being hasty, sure, but I'm really interested in what she's going to serve up next.

I rediscovered her Hendrix covers the other day. Little Wing and Angel from Patti Smith's Meltdown Festival 2005. I was there. I had no idea who she was. It was wonderful.
