I can't pick just one for any of the years. Especially this year. This year has been full of great new albums.
2007 The Shins - Wincing the Night Away Bishi - Nights at the Circus Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha CocoRosie - The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn Beirut - The Flying Club Cup Patrick Wolf - The Magic Position [maybe - mostly on here because of the happy memories it has created] 2006 Beirut - Gulag Orkestar Muse - Black Holes and Revenlations 2005 Patrick Wolf - Wind in the Wires [best best best - of all time, ever] CocoRosie - Noah's Ark 2004 Muse - Absolution Keane - Hopes and Fears Sarah Slean - Day One 2003 Pilate - Caught By the Window The Stills - Logic Will Break Your Heart Patrick Wolf - Lycanthropy Rufus Wainwright - Want One 2002 The White Stripes - The White Stripes Audioslave - Audioslave 2001 Coldplay - Parachutes The Strokes - Is This It? 2000 Hanson - This Time Around 1999 Travis - The Man Who 1998 Rufus Wainwright - Rufus Wainwright
Before this my list would likely consist of a lot of BritPop and boy bands.

I am reviving this thread, because it's quite fun if you're geeky and bored on a summer's night.
i already did one, but i've managed to make mine even longer and there's been a few changes since the first time.
so far, 2008 is shaping up as a brilliant year. 1998, 2004 and 2006 were disgustingly good too.
2008 Johnny Foreigner - Arcs Across The City Why? - Alopecia Xiu Xiu - Women As Lovers 2007 Times New Viking - Present The Paisley Reich 2006 Joanna Newsom - Ys Parenthetical Girls - Safe As Houses 2005 Final Fantasy - Has A Good Home Ninja High School - Young Adults Against Suicide 2004 Mae Shi - Terrorbird Xiu Xiu - Fabulous Muscles 2003 Arab Strap - Monday At The Hug And Pint Xiu Xiu - A Promise 2002 mclusky - Do Dallas Xiu Xiu - Knife Play 2001 Hefner - Dead Media 2000 Bjork - Selmasongs 1999 Ten In The Swear Jar - My Very Private Map 1998 Hefner - Breaking God's Heart Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea 1997 Kenickie - At The Club 1996 Belle & Sebastian - Tigermilk Belle & Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister 1995 Pavement - Wowee Zowee 1994 Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain 1993 Huggy Bear - Taking The Rough With The Smooth 1992 Heavenly - Le Jardin De Heavenly 1991 The Jesus Lizard - Goat The Nation Of Ulysses - 13-Point Plan To Destroy America! 1990 Public Enemy - Fear Of A Black Planet 1989 Pixies - Doolittle 1988 Beat Happening - Jamboree Pixies - Surfer Rosa/Come On Pilgrim 1987 Big Black - Songs About Fucking 1986 The Clean - Anthology 1985 Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love 1984 Minutemen - Double Nickles On The Dime 1983 Black Flag - The First Four Years Sonic Youth - Confusion Is Sex/Kill Yr Idols 1982 Kate Bush - The Dreaming 1981 Black Flag - Damaged

Oh I fucking love this thread so much.
Please note, I have replaced The Pixies with the Field Mice and Stevie Wonder with the much better soul album (that coincidentally came out in the same year..) Curtis Mayfield's Superfly. Oh and much as I love Raw Power, tis out and Eno's Here Come The Warm Jets is IN.
I struggled with 1989 and 1972 the first time around, NOT ANYMORE.
ps, I'm still winning.
For the record my favourite of 2008 thus far is close between Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanagan's Sunday At Devil Dirt and The Magnetic Field's Distortion.
My music taste is actually pretty dull and predictable really.. My 80's choices especially are very "standard"

It's solid from about 69 through to 90-something. I've got a load of untagged albums, though. Urgh

Oooh, Teardrop Explodes. I might have to give that a place instead of AC/DC, although they do bring the ROCK in shedloads.

Meh. External HDDs are the way forward. I've got albums back to 51, but only 1 of them is really good enough to call an "album of the year"

Ergh but they're hassle. My ex had one and it was all like "What do you want to listen to? Pick anything!" so I'd pick something, and then he'd have to get the external hard drive out and plug it in and connect it and wait for it to turn itself on and then fiddle about with something and by then I didn't really want to listen to whatever it was anymore.
