Yeah, they're scientificaly (read "satan-ifically") designed to do that I think. As the late Bill Hicks once said: "If you work in marketing or advertising... kill yourselves"

Yeah, I had a similar experience at work with a Biffy Clyro song "Who's got a match?". Didn't make many sales that day. All was well with the world.

Oblivion-Thickets-Messenger are my favourites after listening to it quite a few times today. They are catchy and seem quite upbeat, considering this is supposed to be a bit of a sad lonesome album from what i had heard said. I'm in a very happy mood today after hearing it, and i think Messenger, with that reallly really lovely higher pitched vocal part in the background has won my heart over

I also listened to it all the way through yesterday!
I love it loads. Halfway through school I had a huge urge to listen to it, which didn't leave for the rest of the day! A sure sign I love an album. I feel sort of connected to it, but not loads yet. There's all the time in the world for that though. I prefer some songs in context with the album, Vulture for example. Today i've had Count of Casualty, Bachelor, Obliv and Thickets in my head. I think these are my four faves. And Theseus. And The Messenger. Oh i love all of them! I cried three times during the album, haa. Mostly during Thickets, for unknown reasons..
Not loving Battle that much, apart from the end bit like 'Since I was 12' etc and when he goes all Matt Bellamy at the end of the song, hah.
So yes, it gets rid of all the worries i had fo sho'!

It's very odd seeing musicians I like compared with Matt Bellamy (I was at school with Muse and find their success v.v. amusing / incredulous).

Okay so here I go... Kriegspeil - This sounded like some sort of THX opening sound or something. It was cool. Hard Times - Love this one, just fun to listen to. And sing to. In the car...or in the shower...or with your friends... Oblivion - Swinton's voice gives it that extra magic. I don't think I'd like it as much without her narration. The Bachelor - Another enjoyable track. I had to warm up a little to this one though, but now I like it. Damaris - I noticed quite a few people don't like this one. It does sound a little over the top, but I enjoy it for the story it tells mainly. I think it sounds good too, but it may sound better to others in a concert setting where it might sound less produced? Thickets - Not one of my top favs, but still a very good song. Reminds me of WITW's sound. Count the Causality - I did not like this very much at all at first. I had to hear it a few more times before I began to enjoy it. Now it's one of the more played tracks. Who Will - Opening line made me smirk, but after reading Patrick's letter I understand this song more. Very good. Vulture - Having already heard this song multiple times, I already knew I liked it. However after reading Patrick's letter, there certainly is a new spin on this song. Blackdown - This is a sad song in the first half. Made me wibble a little, heh. The Sun is Often Out - A suicide song. I have strong feelings against suicide, I find it to be the most selfish thing a person could ever do and I have little to no sympathy for those who do it. A permanent solution to a temporary problem. So as you can see, this song struck a chord (no pun intended) with me. Very good song. Theseus - Oh I bet this would be a nice one to see and hear live. Enjoyable. Battle - Ehh dunno about this. It doesn't really fit into the album, nor does it stand well on it's own. However it might make a good concert song to hype up the crowd? Maybe? *shrugs* Messenger - A nice track to end with. Not the best one on the album, but not bad either. So as a whole the album is great! I can get through it without skipping any tracks hahaha. And that's a very good thing. I dunno how I'd rank against his other albums. They all have something different to offer so it's hard to compare, and right now since it's new and fresh I like it a lot more right now than the others. We'll see...

Was a little underwhelmed when I first heard it a couple of days go; it seemed too ballad-heavy, but after properly listening to it a 2nd and 3rd time I can see that it's definitely a grower. In fact I was listening to it on the bus this morning and had to fight back the tears on several tracks, and was emotionally drained when I arrived at work! After one listen I thought it was his worst album, but now I think it is his best in a way, and love the fact that, like all his records, it is so different from the rest, I love the themes he explores, and his bravery of execution...the man is the biggest musical genius of our time and we are blessed to have him. Just wish the album wasn't so sad

Just opened this up on the proper hi-fi, first time I've listened to it on that rather than on poncy headphones or the little hi-fi. Fucking AMAZING. Anyone who doesn't think this record is a; great and b; amazingly produced can come round and listen to it on my stereo. (This is what listening to Animal Collective looks like on it; )

I hate the "meh" reviews that "Thickets", "Battle", and "The Messger" are getting. "Thickets" and "The Messenger" are probably my favourite tracks on the album. Secondly, "Battle" isn't bad, it's just a bit DIFFERENT. Maybe we need to open ourselves up to tracks that are both louder and more mellow than the norm for Patrick...

The Messenger is beautiful.
Battle sounds AWESOME through big speakers that can really move air about. It's gonna sound shite on a laptop / cheapo PC speakers though.

Different opinions and all that? But seriously, that AC drawing is absolutely genius. And so true.

all albums should be drawn like that. I still have the original image, so if you name an album, and I know it, I might draw it on for you.

I think the main reason why everyone was so unsure about Battle to start with was because it follows Theseus, which is all gentle and lovely and then... BAM!!! Shock! I think I've definitely warmed to it though I do seriously love the whole thing, although I'm doubting whether I'm going to be able to listen to The Sun Is Often Out in a public place for a good while! Oh, and sickmouthy, the diagram is awesome!

i just had to come back in here and proclaim my love for thickets. i first heard it from the mp3s of his tate modern show and i fell in love with it then, and now hearing its final version on the album actually just fills me with so much joy i can't explain it. the song is magical and i really believe it could be one of my all time favourites.

I think I've definitely warmed to it though I do agree with this, of course. While it is a bit startling, this comes to me as fitting to Patrick's personality and his character. It's constantly shifting, from quiet to loud, from off to on...
